At Montreal 1976, Soviet Vasily Alexeev, who had set 79 world records from 1970 to 1977, easily wins his second straight super heavyweight gold medal by a margin of 35kg
At Beijing 2008, an extremely emotional Matthias Steiner of Germany wins super heavyweight gold and dedicates the victory to his wife Susann, who had died in a car accident in 2007, holding her photo on the medal podium.
At Atlanta 1996, Turkey’s Naim Suleymanoglu, nicknamed “Pocket Hercules” because of his small stature, wins 56kg gold with a world record, becoming the first weightlifter to win three Olympic gold medals.
At Melbourne 1956, American Charles Vinci makes the required 56kg weight limit with just 15 minutes to spare by giving himself a severe haircut. He went on to win the gold medal.
At Barcelona 1992, Greek Pyrros Dimas wins the first of his three straight gold medals in the closest of competitions, taking the victory over Poland’s Krzysztof Siemion on the second tiebreaker - who lifted the winning weight first – after they tied in total weight lifted and shared the same body weight.
