Not to discredit either accomplishment but I disagree with the poll results.
In my lifetime I witnessed both events. These are two different disciplines. Nancy's accomplishment nearly 50 years ago now, brought to Canada, a long enduring sense of pride for many Canadians and British Columbians, but; skiing was long established by 1968 and despite all the well deserved accolades I don't recall Nancy Greene being drug tested.
To me, Ross's accomplishment was equally if not more memorable on many facets. Modern Olympics are more demanding than ever on athletes. He was the first gold medalist of a new, exciting, globally groundbreaking Olympic event.
Who is anyone to judge him as less than equal to Nancy Greene?
