Been doing this work for so long that when I tried looking for a better paying job...my work skills had never improved. Same basic computer, customer service, and other skills. So I wasn't trained enough for an office job, manager job, or any other higher paying occupation. I do not have the start up money or time to even get reimbursed to get the training I need. Now I'm just crossing my fingers I can get a desk job within school system but I'm competeing against outsiders with more experience. I find a lot of us are trapped in this position at low pay. We end up wasting years that could've been spent upgrading our skills for our next higher paying job in or out of the system.

How many paras do all the lesson planning for their students? I am an ed tech III (Maine's para designation) and work in a resource room with 1 sped teacher and 2 other ed techs. At the beginning of the year we sit with the teacher and review IEP goals for each student. Once I set the daily schedules, each ed tech does her own lesson planning. I have a master's degree in biochemistry, but no education in education. I do my best, but I really have no clue as to what 4th graders in sped are expected to learn! I am responsible for setting the math curriculum and lessons for 15 students in grades 1-5, each of whom I see daily for 45-60 mins. Our sped director thinks the sped teachers do the planning, but the teachers do NOT. In fact, I set the schedule and tell our sped teacher which child she'll be seeing and when, and for what subject. I am just wondering if it's common for paraeducators to do the lesson planning for their students, as we do in my school.

ParaEducators are not given enough time to adequately collaborate with their cooperating staff!
