I voted almost, but no. With a title like Blood of the Conquistadors, I was expecting some, well, conquistadors. Or blood. Or a story that started in that era. Certainly not Jack Sparrow and Reese’s Puff cereal. The opening line is about something too normal to grab a reader’s attention. Perhaps if the story had started with David afraid to look at the floor for fear of seeing “those strange arms” still there, it would have been an indication of trouble to come. If the author had provided more detail about “those strange arms”, this beginning might have earned a yes. They say show a character’s normal life before you plunge him into conflict, but this start has more tell than show.
