The other advantage of voting "favorite performance" vs "best performance" is you don't have to feel like you've seen a decent portion of Washington's films (which, sadly, I have not).

Gotta to go with "Glory" for favorite performance, because it was his first for me. The kind of "who was -that- guy?" star turn.

  • Wendy Weber - 8 years ago

What can I say, I really like "Fallen."

  • Allen Bishop - 8 years ago

How can you not have Devil in a Blue Dress? This is Denzel at the top of his game in a criminally overlooked 90's film noir.

The Magnificent Seven was amazing, and I've liked everything I've ever seen him in, but the movie that made me fall for Denzel was definitely Deja Vu. Definitely not the most inventive or resonant film he's been in, but he is just irresistibly charming without seeming to try. A fun action movie with a surprising amount of heart.

Just wanted to point out five thirty eight's analysis of his films: http://fivethirtyeight.com/features/the-four-types-of-denzel-washington-movies/
Looks like only He Got Games isn't from 'The Titan' type. I'm wondering how willl the 'other' voted split between those categories..

I want to put in a plug for Fallen, the detective movie where Denzel's John Hobbes and his partner played by John Goodman are trying to track an evil spirit that passes from person to person through touch. It's not going to show up on his Oscar reel, but it's a pretty solid 90s detective noir with the twist of a spirit as the antagonist. I never hear this movie mentioned, but it's good enough to check out.

I'm glad to see the "other" category have such a strong showing here, because it shows just how many good to great performances Denzel has turned out over the years. I'm going to add another one to the list I have not seen anyone mention yet: American Gangster. I loved the duality in the film, the slow decline into corruption and the fight for him to be both a man for his family and a business man, drawing parallels with Bryan Cranston in Breaking Bad years before the television show's debut. A fantastic portrayal and a great film all around.

Never really cared for Denzel at all. This list suddenly makes me realize I've seen very few of his movies. He's certainly never been a casting choice that drew me to a movie. I don't have a favorite because I guess I just find him either overrated or I just haven't seen a particularly strong performance from him. He's so over the top in Training Day, I can't understand how anyone would consider it even a good performance, let alone a great one.

I voted for Unstoppable. It's such a fun popcorn movie that I feel is criminally underrated. Denzel does his Denzel thing and Chris Pine does a remarkably good job.

  • Edgar Vargas - 8 years ago

I'm not a Denzel fan at all, I find him rather boring and repetitive. But I would have to puck The Hurricane or even Glory. I really enjoyed his performances and felt he was a bit stronger in the Hurricane.

"Best" has to be Malcolm X. There's really no question there. But I'm happy to see 'Other' leading for favorite, as it indicates that Washington has had so many different enjoyable "favorite" roles among the filmspotting listenership. For me, the favorite has to be as Coach Herman Boone in 2000's Remember the Titans. It's my first memory of Denzel (I was 10 when the movie came out), and it remains the most quintessentially Denzel performance, for me, to this day. The perfect balance of humor, swagger, and genuine gravitas, he is the primary reason that movie manages to strike that same balance so well.

If I'm picking MY favorite performance, have to go with Remember the Titans. Maybe I saw it at the right age (I was in middle school when it came out), maybe it was just the first Denzel movie I saw and I was swayed by that smile, but that performance is just iconic to me. If I revisited it now (haven't seen it since it came out), I might a different opinion, but right now that's what I'm going with.

I love VIRTUOSITY but Russell Crowe is the best performance as SID 6.0.
