I have the nest and it not only deals with the heating it can do other household items too like your lights and lots of other items around your home. Its great I can have my heating on 18 and when I am leaving a friends house can remotely turn the heating up with my mobile or tab on the nest app so when I arrive home it's a perfect temperature.
Even though I pay the bill, the power companies can turn your supplies off remotely.
Only British gas supply a gas smart meter that I am aware of ATM.
You may have issues each time you switch suppliers which you should do yearly for the best price.
What I have done is setup an independent supply monitoring system, yeah I have to send my readings manually but I have none of the other issues.
