Barack Obama is considering getting a dog. What breed would you recommend?

I don,t think the Obamas deserve a dog at all.but some cold blooded pet such as a snake or gator. Marxists should choose pets that best depict their personality. When he forces national health care on us all and gets his death panels in place will our pets suffer the same fate as the elderly and the infirmed?

  • Jaz - 3 years ago

    wade v byrum
    You hateful ignorant person.
How dare you comment he should get a pit bull because they are likely to attack their owners.
It's people like you that are getting innocent dogs killed.

  • James W Miner - 3 years ago

I think a grizzly bear or African lion would be better then a dog. The way he will mistreat the American people and the constitution requires something to keep him on his toes. I don't feel he has enough love to have a dog. I would never give him one of my puppies.

  • Angia Macomber - 3 years ago

Our boys (ages 7 and 9) are almost the same ages as Sash and Malia. We got a new puppy in June, whom we named after President-Elect Obama! :) He is a black male Schnoodle--hybrid cross between a mini Schnauzer and a mini Poodle--who is nearly full-grown: 15 lbs. at 7 months old.

"Rocky" is a great dog. We use the Dog Breed Info. search tool at http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/search.htm to help us pick the type of dog that would be right for us--kid-friendly, playful, easy to train, non-shedding, hypo-allergenic, and so on.

We highly recommend a Schnoodle and we highly recommend the Dog Breed Info. site. Good luck to the Obama family as they choose their new canine family member!

  • Debra - 3 years ago

Barack and Michelle haven't gotten a dog before now because Malia is allergic to dogs.

  • Patience - 3 years ago

Denise, One of us is confused, I'm not sure which one. I am not from Australia ... That person Gator, who called me a twit, is from there and seems to think that his word is final.
I simply said that good parenting should involve exploring all medical methods of dealing with a child's allergies and that there is no such thing as an hypoallergenic dog... For that I am called a twit and write twaddle... as I said, he has nothing positive to contribute so he insults instead.

  • Denise - 3 years ago

Can you not keep people off this site who post remarks like PResident Obama's wife being ugly? can't you restrict the comments? Also J.A., who does not even have the guts to leave a first name, should be stricken. Appalling. and no, Australian Patience, we are not all like this, but when you criticize, remember that no one has sad anything about Australia. It's really none of our business.

  • Denise - 3 years ago

Cindy Stallings' comment about "getting a mean pit bull so he will bite Barack Obama" is asinine and inappropriate. It's disrespectful towards Barack Obama AND pit bulls. She needs to stay off this site if that is how she feels toward dogs.
A poodle would be great for the Obamas. they come in small, medium and large and a reescue dog could easily be obtained.

  • Ruthie - 3 years ago

If he wants a playful dog that is less likely to bite and doesn't shed I would recommend a Miniature Schnauzer. Also please don't torture the puppy by cutting its ears.

  • tigerlily46514 - 3 years ago

Obama's doughter is allergic, and they WANT a 'mix' so they oughta get a third generation GOLDENDOODLE!!
Also, it is sad to see such HATRED and bigotry in a whitehouse dog poll, esp at a time when we NEED TO PULL together!! Right now, there are democrats and republicans side by side in Iraq, WE need to pull together back here stateside too!! Cmon!! Let's TRY!!!

  • Patience - 3 years ago

Well Gator, My Aussie critic, since you found it necssary to resort to name calling I feel I must respond.
Who would you consider the twit? the person who ignores their child's medical problems or the prson who suggests a remedy? It was not a personal attack,it was simply a statement that good parenting would be to explore all possible cures. What was "twaddleish" about that?
I notice that you had nothing positive to contribute to the comments.

  • Beth - 3 years ago

He should get a Westie - Bush had a Scottie; would be cute and show he's opposite Bush.

  • Gun totin workin taxpayer - 3 years ago

He should just get a squirrel. Obama is ear deep in ACORN(s).

  • Gator - 3 years ago

Patience, get off your high horse!! For goodness sake...we/you do not know these people personally. What right have you to attack their ability as parents! You might be the best dog love, cat lover, animal lover out there, but you come across as a real twit of a person. Is anyone else reading her twaddle! You may be right in the dander/alergist argument but lay off the personal attacks..is this the place?

  • Susy - 3 years ago

Hypoallergenic is the way to go since one of his daughters is allergic to dogs. the labradoodle sounds really good
    .

  • Patience - 3 years ago

Sorry about the double post... My mistake

  • Patience - 3 years ago

Obviously everyone on this site is a dog lover or we wouldn't be here... however there are many misconceptions.
First, All dogs shed... The curly coated types seem not to because, having the curly coat, they retain the hair until it is groomed out.
Second... Why does anyone think there is such a thing as a hypoallergenic dog (or cat)?... No such animal... ALL dogs (cats...animals) have dander, which is shed constantly, but is reduced with bathing.
But the most bothersome part of the dog versus allergy discussions is... This is supposed to be a educated man, has he never heard of a allergist?
I was violently allergic to cats but refused to give up my cats... simple solution... go to an allergist and be desensitized. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that one out.
The child will not be able to walk around in a bubble the rest of her life and she will be exposed to allergens at friends houses or just walking down the street.
What good is being a smart man if he can't protect his children?

HES GOT A JUNKYARD DOG , HIS WIFE. GOD IS SHE UGLY.

  • Gator - 3 years ago

You have provided me with heaps of smiles, and heaps of shock. You Americans are so passionate about all thing and that is great, but to attack the Obama's personally is a bit sad! You live in a democracy and the people have spoken...that is it! If it does not work out then vote again in 4 years. It is compulsory to vote in Australia and that is a good thing, and I will say a lot easier. Now about dogs...I voted a Lab as it is the most popular dog in America. However, the shelter idea is great as all dogs deserve a loving home, and that is what will be provided by the girls. I was shock to read that 20,000 greyhounds are put down or need a home...how horrible. Maybe you could canvas the President to legislate changes about dog ownership and rules to the greyhound racing industry. Use this to your advantage. Enjoy the new America and I hope it works out good for you all!

  • Rose Brown - 3 years ago

A Doodle!! They are absolutely wonderful dogs, friendly, loyal, playful, smart and will work well with the girl who has allergies...I have one...Peaches is her name...she won my heart! You won't be sorry.

  • Karin VanderWaal - 3 years ago

There sure are a lot of sore losers on this site! Were you upset when GW(our incumbant president) Stole the election in 2000? Thank God it's finally over!
I think the Obama family should consider a poodle. They are smart and famlily loving and should not bother Malia's asthma because they do not shed.

  • J.A. - 3 years ago

Everybody knows that blacks prefer to keep pitt bulls out back on a tow chain so people think they are tough. Only usually they are in such sad shape they are too weak to move. Maybe it would stay strong enough to turn on them one day though, especially Michelle.

  • Diane - 3 years ago

I vote for a greyhound or 2 so the whole country can watch as they become adored, wonderful, hypo-allergenic pets.

  • Chris Wierer - 3 years ago

I would suggest a Bichon Frise because of their fantastic personalities and companion attitude. They can be found in shelters and at Petfinders. I have 2 (have had 4 altogether and they have all been rescue seniors) and they are a breed that can gt into your heart, although hard to housebreak. The only reason I would not want them to get a Bichon is that it will once again bring attention to the breed and the puppy millers will start up breeding them heavy again. Of course any dog they get will have that happen to them.

I am appalled with some of the comments in this thread. Your personal opinions do not belong here and especially against these children waiting for the first dog and the the person holding the position of President of our country. No, I didn't vote for him, but he is still a human being and opviously with more heart than a lot of commenters here.

  • Ilovethemall - 3 years ago

Hussain hasn't let his daughters have a dog because he's a Muslim, and Muslims consider dogs dirty animals and unclean for them. That's what my "persecuted in Iraq because he's Catholic" repatriated to USA husband told me. and from what I've seen, he's right. Obama agreed to the dog only because it would make him more acceptable to the American public, not because he cares about dogs. However, if he will get one (hopefully more- whatever DC ordinances permit, since they can afford it) from a shelter that's on death row, at least one more will be saved. I think they should get at least one for each family member and a few cats from death row, too!

  • Peggy - 3 years ago

Someone should notify President-elect Barak Obama that hypoallergenic dogs can be found in shelters, too. I have two lowchens. No hair shedding and hypoallergenic. There are others, too. I hope every shelter in the US is contacting him about the hypoallergenic puppies and dogs that need homes.

  • Sandra - 3 years ago

Since one of the girls has allergies, the bichon frise or a soft-coated wheaton terrier would be breeds that would allow them to have a dog without causing problems for her. I believe there are rescue groups for almost every type of dog out there and possibly they could find one through that organization that needs a home and loving family. As for the inappropriate comments by several people, it is sad that even here they cannot refrain from spreading poison and hate. That in itself is a sad reminder of how far the Republican Party has fallen from what it once was. Possibly read and view other forms of news besides Fox (Entertainment) News and one might have a more rounded view of the world and the people in it.

  • Carole - 3 years ago

On the comments....what a DOGFIGHT! But fun! Love bullshit cross!

On the poll, how about a dalmation????? (tee hee)

I hate to think of any dog being contained for convenience in the White House and cared for by 'attendants'. A large breed will most certainly break things everywhere and let's not forget that puppy-chewing couple of years! Do you guys think Sasha and Malia will spend a lot of time with said pet? I can see the Prez & 1st Lady being VERY UPSET with dog hair on their clothes or chewed up $500 shoes!

Please do remember that we're all here because we're all animal LOVERS!
PS We have 2 rescued dogs, 3 cats ditto, and an adopted cockatiel who was abandoned by his teenaged mother!

    Carole

  • Deborah - 3 years ago

As a Canadian, I really have no say, but being a dog lover, can't resist. Having had dogs all my life, the BEST PETS have always been mixed breeds (but no terriers please). A shelter pet should be chosen with care, (taking into consideration the new owners experience and understanding of caring for a pet), and don't choose based on looks. Take the time to be with the animal and allow it's personality to come out.
Additionally, I am appalled that some would use this forum to spew their venom on the country's choice to be their leader. Taking personal shots at this family is so shameful and undignified. Please show some respect and integrity.

  • amy - 3 years ago

They should get a great dane from a rescue. Great Danes are the best dogs around kids! Or a mixed breed/stray from a shelter/rescue. Whatever type of dog they get, it should definitely be from a shelter.

  • MHM - 3 years ago

Lhasa Apso is my vote! With grooming, the allergies should be at a minimum. A Lhasa will provide unconditional love and attention to the girls and the family! And, a Lhasa is a great judge of character...Of course, a Lhasa may be working overtime in Washington.

  • RobynK - 3 years ago

I'm Aussie and find many of these comments missing the point that every child learns acceptance and true unconditional love from loving and caring for a puppy. Good luck to the Obamas and whatever dog they pick is fine cause it is wanted.

  • Keith Leonard - 3 years ago

If he adopts a shelter dog, what difference does it make WHAT breed it is? One less dog in a shelter is good enough for me. And there IS no best dog. All dogs are the best dog.

  • fieldmouse - 3 years ago

Personally I am concerned that the Obamas will get a dog. LOTS OF breeds do not like politicans.....get a cat and it can eat all the rats running around

  • misee - 3 years ago

sgt - I commend you -short and to the point - the problem is the biggest percentage of america doesn't get it -thats why he was elected -we will stand together because you are not alone

  • MB & Geo - 3 years ago

We recommend a Border Collie. We finally have a smart President, so why not get the smartest dog! They're loyal, friendly, love to play, and have a great personality. They are also available from one of the Border Collie Rescues.

  • Susan - 3 years ago

I have a boxer and know how loyal and loving they are with children. What a great way to promote the breed! Having said that, I am disgusted by the political comments by others. The election is over, so move on and accept that President-Elect Obama will lead us for at least the next four years and that is four years we can watch his family raise their new dog!

  • Yinna - 3 years ago

Without a doubt, the new Obama should be a HAVANESE dog.
The Hav is non allergenic , non shedding, which meets the basic requirements.
A Havanese is also a happy, playful, people friendly, intelligent, gentle, kind, get along with all amazing spirited dog. They weigh betwee 12- 15 lbs, and are ohh ,so cute. Only obtain from a very qualified breeder. GOOGLE the HAVANESE.

  • Letha - 3 years ago

I picked mix/shelter dog because you didn't list a "rescue" as one of your choices. That is what I really would choose

  • Captain - 3 years ago

sgt said it all. I remember those days, Theres only one animal for that charming man and his america hating wife. It would be a cross between a wolverine and an african dingo.

  • David Cook - 3 years ago

Obama has already mentioned he would like a shelter dog.

  • David Cook - 3 years ago

Obama has already mentioned he would like a shelter dog.

  • Rachel a Mama for Obama - 3 years ago

I vote a mini schnauzer. We thought long and hard about a dog and really did not want one, but we caved for our 3 kids. We absolutely LOVE our mini. Loyal, incredibly smart, loving and WONDERFUL with small children. I never knew how a dog could bring so much joy to a house (even for a clean/control freak like myself). We just love her so much and she gives everyone attention and love.

  • Stardustfawn - 3 years ago

I vote for either a shelter dog or one from a rescue group. There are breed rescue groups for every breed. All our eight dogs are rescues, all different mixed breeds and we love them very much. We found our most recent dog at PetSmart from a group that had been fostering him. He came with shots and neutered. He had his own pillow and toys. He was partially trained and he is very loving. I think rescuing an older dog would be a nice choice because they are already calm and probably trained too. In addition, older dogs are less likely to be adopted but they can make wonderful loving pets.

  • Malti-Mom - 3 years ago

The Obamas should get a Maltese- my sweet baby is the most wonderful dog I've ever shared my life with. They are small, but spunky, active but not "hyper", easy to housetrain & smart as a whip. Also great for a family with an allergic child because they don't shed. And even though they say they want a big dog, a Maltese is a big dog in a small body! :~)
I also have 2 Shelties who came from a rescue group, & they are wonderful girls. But, oh- the hair!!

  • yorkiemom - 3 years ago

I agree, this site should not be used for political views. This is all about giving a homeless dog a good and wonderful home for the rest of his/her life, no matter what kind the President and his family choose. I do hope they will adopt from a shelter or rescue group.

I can't believe some of the nasty things that are being said on this site which is ONLY about dogs and what kind the President and his family want. They have to have one that is hypoallergenic for the children. They can find some at the shelters. That is where I get all of mine. And for everybody writing comments about The President, maybe if you cannot say anything nice you shouldn't say anything at all. This shows your mentality.

  • sgt - 3 years ago

    ...slip of the key...Fidel

  • sgt - 3 years ago

To Donna...and all of you 'politically correct' people. Ye reap what ye sow. A man's ability, not his charm, is what this country (and it's animals) needs.

Most of you can't remember Cuba when a young, handsome, charming man took over and promised CHANGE. His name was Fedel Castro!

  • yorkiemom - 3 years ago

I voted for a poodle or yorkshire, mainly because he stated that the children are allergic to dogs. So they would need one that doesn't shed otherwise I would have voted for a mixed-breed, shelter dog. They need homes. Sometimes the shelters have poodles and yorkies come in. It is worth a try to at least try to adopt one. I don't buy dogs, I adopt from shelters and rescue groups. They could also think of yorkie rescue where they have yorkies, and yorkie mix poodle. These little fellows need adoption.

For the record, there is no need for anyone to be nasty he is our President and his children would like to have a dog. Don't worry I am sure the White House personnel will take very good care of their dog and it will be living better than we are or have been for the last 8 years.

  • Nancy - 3 years ago

One of Obama's daughters has allergies. A Bijion or a poodle would be the best choice for allergy issues. However, having allergies myself, I vote for greyhounds or whippets. They are wonderful pets and can be rescued, especially greyhounds. I have no allergy problems with my greyhounds and I have 3 of them! Please pass this on to Obama and his family.

  • sgt - 3 years ago

A Pit Bull, but I really would recommend no dog at all. I love all dogs too much...

  • Joyce - 3 years ago

I vote for a mixed/shelter pup, whichever breed mix is best suited for the GIRLS. (isn't the puppy supposed to be for them???) Why a mixed? Obama himself is of mixed heritage, as is nearly every other red-blooded American. I myself have a unique pedigree, and want my dog to be a true reflection of me. Thus, a mixed. Mine is a rescue, someone dumped her off at our driveway when she was 4 weeks old, and she is a pure joy!

Those girls are going to have enough ahead of them, let them have a sweet, faithful, constant bundle of love to tell their deepest secrets too. Lord knows, that's better than talking to some tabloid reporter!

  • shnzermom - 3 years ago

They have stated that they would like to get a dog from a shelter which I think is great! Also one of his daughters has allergies to dogs, so they should consider a Schnauzer, Bichon, etc ( Hypoallergenic)

  • Shannon D - 3 years ago

I'm AMAZED at some of the awful comments here... saying how irresponsible they are. I'm also amazed that people suggest SPECIFIC COLORS of breeds (English creme Dachshund, Blue Merle Collie, Sable and White Collie, etc.). Color makes no difference in a breed, unless it's something like a breed genetically likely to be deaf/blind with a certain amount of white... that's more stressful and they definitely don't need an extra aspect of taking care of a new dog.

To add to my Rat Terrier comment from before... I hadn't realized that they wanted a big dog or a hypoallergenic dog... which doesn't completely rule out Rat Terriers. They certainly act big and aren't fragile, and I know several people allergic to dogs who have Rat Terriers. My dog's breeder has people come to her house every so often to see if they're allergic to her dogs... most aren't. To the people suggesting "Doodle breeds" because they're supposed to be hypoallergenic... GUESS WHAT, most aren't... they haven't been bred consistently long enough because most breeds just cross random poodles with random whatever other breed, and traits aren't fixed at 1 or even 2 generations unless you get lucky. Whatever they choose they'll have to make sure the specific dog won't set off her allergies/asthma. They also already said they wanted a shelter dog... It's totally possible to get a rescued purebred dog! That, I think, is what they should do... it would make breed rescues more visible, and some need all the help they can get... fosters, adopters, people donating money, volunteers, etc.

I doubt the president-elect will have a chance/option to read these comments, or if he even knows they're around.. it's obviously ultimately their family's decision, but if he does... GOOD LUCK and I hope you choose the perfect dog for your family.

  • jabg - 3 years ago

Man, you guys just slay me. We are talking about two kids who have been pestering their folks for a dog. Whatever they get, it will be loved and cared for and adored. That makes a good dog. Shelter dog is only proper option if they can find one that is low allergen. Second, they should get a dog that is at least 7months old or so, so its temperament is more evident and sometimes shelter dogs at this age are already housebroken, so the girls would have less frustration in handling their new best friend. Next, a black dog would be nice ---- get your wagging tongues back in your snoots, this is not racist ---- but because black and mixed, mottled black dogs are the toughest to adopt out. I have three, and they are amazing. I agree larger medium to medium size probably best. please, nothing that fits in Paris Hilton's handbag.
They might as well get two, so they have company of one another.
I have had a purebred dog twice in my life --- when i was born, we had a collie, and when i was about three, i used my first $50 (part of my being born money) to go in with my sister on a German Shepherd. Rest are adopted or strays. All have been wonderful.
I will now shut up and refrain --and restrain---myself from making any negative comments toward some of you very tacky people, except that perhaps this site has proven to me again, that Republicans for the most part, are just plain meaner and bigger babies than Dems.

  • Joan - 3 years ago

No dog for them, I could tell a long time ago that they are not animal lovers.
    Cold-hearted toward animals.

  • Zayness - 3 years ago

I also agree with Reggie - and my son is headed to Iraq for his 2nd tour in another week and I also did not vote for Obama - I also have a boxer /pit bull mix adopted from a shelter and he is the most loving dog - not a bit of meanness in him -

  • Zayness - 3 years ago

They didn't have pets before why all of sudden now they can have one? Because now he won't have to see it or take care of it the hired staff will. So he only gets his daughters a puppy cuz he got into the white house - seems stupid

  • Reggie - 3 years ago

I did not vote for President Elect Obama , because our Son is serving in IRAQ and felt a Man with Military experience would be optimum
Since Mr Obama was so influencial in obtaining younger voter ,some even for the first time.. I feel adopting an American Staffordshire Bull Terrier from a Shelter which is neutered/spayed would be the optimal thing he could do . As we all know the Shelters are mainly unfortunately filled with "Pit Bulls" The Youth of today neeed to realize that they are Smart and a very people friendly breed that has recieved a very bad rap from the likes on M. Vick /Football PLayer and Rap stars.
Thanks ... from the Mother of 5 rescue Am Staff and Staffordshire Bull terriers. /.ALL Shelter Dogs . I've grown up and worked for the Breed for 50 yrs.

  • Liz Spangler - 3 years ago

Golden doodle. perfect for kids with alergies. And it should come from a rescue like RAGOM. Rescue a
    Golden of Minnesota

  • CorgiMom05 - 3 years ago

I think a Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a good dog for anyone. They are very well behaved, extremely intelligent and just the right size for any living arrangements. As far as for a Presidential family, Corgis would love the White House lawns to run around on, especially if there are more than one Corgi in the family. Also, Corgis are royal dogs anyway, being the preferred breed of the Queen of England. There's a way to connect with our allies!

  • Candor33 - 3 years ago

Forgot to add that any breed has a Rescue organization that has hundreds of dogs looking for homes. We have 3 boxers that came through Boxer Rescue. I also had a Springer Spaniel, labs, SHepherd, rat terrier and several bordie collies over the past 30 yrs that I helped saved, some I kept, some I fostered. Every one of them were awesome, gentle, loving companions.
Take a Rescue... any breed. They are great dogs, grateful to be alive and cared for. Worth saving. He will lead others to follow.

  • Candor33 - 3 years ago

They need a boxer, because he's got a fight in front of him. Not to fight... boxers are the class clown and will keep him and his girls laughing, and fit, once the day is done. they are short haired, less likely to trigger allergies and they are happy, loyal, glad to be alive dogs, who make you feel better just for being with them.
A boxer will also keep him humble. They have a definite idea of who rules the house.

  • Sandi - 3 years ago

Hey Miss V I also have a golden and a peekapoo and wouldn't trade them for the world. The golden is a smart gentle giant and the peekapoo is my little cuddle bunny. Either would be a wonderful addition to the Obama family.

  • Sophia Backus - 3 years ago

well I also was going political>> I voted for a pit. But now I would say lab but labs love water so thats out. I would say a shelter dog would be good/

  • Cindy - 3 years ago

Melissa, you need to learn how to spell Congratulations before you go telling us to love and respect our new president (elect). He has to EARN those things from us along with our trust. I pray you're right.

  • JZ - 3 years ago

I have had three English Springer Spaniels, but I don't think the Obamas will pick the same kind of dog that the two President Bushes had in the White House. Besides, they are too friendly a dog for Mr. and Mrs. Obama. I voted for the whippet because every time I see a whippet getting examined by the judges in dog shows they have their tails between their legs. And for some reason that just reminds me of the President-elect-don't ask questions or examine him.

  • Heather - 3 years ago

I am a military spouse and I too am hopeful that the Obama family will adopt their new family member from a shelter. After living on the U.S. Territory of Guam from 2001-2003 and volunteering countless hours at G.A.I.N. (Guam Animals In Need, Guam's only shelter) I have witnessed first hand the sadness that comes from pet overpopulation. Too many animals + not enough homes = disaster not only in the form of euthanasia for those who make it to the shelter, but also in the form of disease and tramatic injuries for those animals who are left to roam. It is my hope that by choosing a rescue dog our new First Family might shed a little light on this issue and remind people of the importance of spaying and neutering your pets. We ADORE our 2 Guam dogs and our Guam kitty and can't imagine life without them.

  • mischa - 3 years ago

He just said at his first press conference that they would prefer a shelter dog, but someone in the family has allergies. They are going to try to find the right match to suit both situations. Good for them! :) I think adopting a needy pet is absolutely the best choice and a fantastic gesture. Just think what a wonderful message that would send. Shelter animals are fantastic and they need us so very much. How awful if they would get some designer fad breed and support a business that literally kills shelter pets.

By the way, I think it's hilarious that the sore losers out there are using this board to spew their venom. Get over it and get a life! LOL

  • Pat - 3 years ago

first of all-we are speaking of our president and whether you like him or not, due respect is required. I didn't vote for him but I joined them army so that we all may have the priviledge/responsibility shown on November 4th.
I think he should get two medium sized dogs (can't hurt them as easy but slightly easier to control), fix 'em, have his daughters choose 'em, name 'em and with the first lady present and the help of the "dog whisperer" train 'em....I prefer 1 to be a soft coated wheaton terrier and the other to be an american staffordshire terrier (the military mascot of WWII). If rescued then a variation of these breeds. There are no bad dogs, only bad owners!

First, I am the proud owner of two dogs (aka 'my babies')...Lexi is a 4 year old Golden Retriver mix and Chloe is a 3 year Peekapoo. Both were adopted; one from our local Humane Society and the other from a family who moved away and could not take her. I could not love my dogs any more than I do. Whatever dog the Obama family chooses will be the dog that brings their family great joy. Secondly, reading some of the nasty posts here leaves me with the confirmation that racial attitudes, while getting better over the years, will always exist; people such as yourselves don't want a better world...you seem to thrive/exist on racial nagativity. To those people I say: Get over it...the American people have spoken and as Mr. McCain stated in his speach the other night, have spoken clearly. President-Elect Obama is going to be the President of the United States and that's the way it is. As far as your comments go about the future First Lady, I would be very curious to see which animal you closely resemble. Stick to the topic at hand and if unable to do so, pick up the leash and go walk your dog.

I believe their dog should come from a shelter. And I hope it's not a pit or a rotweiller.

  • misee - 3 years ago

I think he needs to get a half breed
with a muslim back ground and extremest kenya relatives -but BORN IN THE U.S.A of course

  • amazed - 3 years ago

Wow, I can't believe the political comments.

    1. Of course he should get a shelter or rescue dog. It would set the right example for everybody.

    2. I may not agree with the man's policies (at all), but there are some seriously mean spirited things being said. The American process works, it functioned the way it is supposed to and election day is always a victory for every American. Support the president and if you don't like him, find a better candidate in the next election.

    3. Every parent has to face the kiddos begging for a pet. Some parents try to make up for making their kids miserable by giving them stuff. Sometimes, they even give in and get a pet. it just means there is something normal in the Obama household. Nothing else.

And since BLACK dogs are the hardest to place and are the majority of non-adoptions, it should be a BLACK dog.

Im not racist I have gold teeth

  • Pat Jensen - 3 years ago

West Highland Terriers are small, so they travel well and are so cute and cuddly but they are sturdy, hardy, travel well, train easily and won't shed all over the house.

  • Sandi - 3 years ago

    To Meg,
What a racist remark that is. If McCain had a dog would it have a big lump on it's face? And to JSM maybe the Obama's will hire McCain to clean up after their dog at least he's be good for something.

  • meg - 3 years ago

I wonder if the dog will have gold teeth

  • graciem - 3 years ago

they should NOT get a dog until the girls are old enough to properly care for and take responsiblity for the animal. If they MUST have a dog now, there are wonderful dogs at shelters, both mixed and pure bred, waiting for forever homes.

  • Barb Elkin - 3 years ago

The Obama family would set a meaningful & wonderful example for the rest of the world if they rescue a dog from a shelter. There are so many loving, lovely & loveable dogs & cats in shelters that need homes, but are euthanized every day due to over crowding. It is so sad. The last thing we need is for breeders & puppy mills to produce even more dogs in response to his breed choice. Please encourage the Obamas to rescue!!!
I know they will do the right thing... I've believed in them all along.

To the haters: Stop spewing hatred & give him a chance. He won the election, fair & square! Now get behind him & let him get to work.

I can certainly understand why the Obamas have not had a dog until now..I for one would and HAVE waited until my Children were old enough to take some responsibility regarding ownership and the care...If they feel they are ready then so be it and more power to them! .. It is NOT our place to Judge, or criticize one way or the other...it takes alot of responsibility to owning a pet... If President Obama and Michelle feel they AND their daughters are ready ... what better time?...
I would suggest a Standard Poodle if they would like a medium to large size dog...Poodles, standard, miniture and toys are beautiful, easy to train, playful, gentle and do not shed...Whatever their decision...
Im sure they will find the one that is exactly right for their family!
I have no doubt in that ...

I think they should get a boxer. I have had a lot of different breeds of dogs all throughout my life and I find the boxer to be the best. They are very loyal, loving, playful, affectionate and caring dogs, and they are very protective of their families, especially the children. They do need lots of exercise, but with him having 2 little girls, they will have plenty of exercise and lots of room. People need to quit being so hateful on here too. This is about a family and a dog, not politics.

Just because they haven t had a dog before means nothing. I didn t either when my kids were young. I thought that I personally couldn t do them justice with what was needed for them while attending to what our family needed. My kids are now older & now I can & join a couple to our family & train, nuture & can handle them properly the way they deserve. Now I have the energy & less sleepless nights that the kids are babies any more.... Lol.

How about a Mastiff? They are beautiful dogs! They also produce a whole lot of s***, just like Obama.

  • Maria Timmes - 3 years ago

They should show America that they are really caring and find their perfect pet in a shelter or at a rescue society! How great that would be!!! And perhaps it would wake people up to the fact that there are so many beautiful loving animals waiting for homes!!

  • caroline - 3 years ago

A soft-coated Wheaton terrier would be perfect because; 1) they are fun-loving dogs who retain their playfulness all their lives, so the girls would have great fun playing with them; 2) they are good for allergy sufferers; 3) they don't shed which would be great for the White House which has to maintain its proper appearance; 4) they are a nice size, not too huge but not a tiny "purse dog" which really isn't a dog at all.

  • Kathy - 3 years ago

I am all for getting a dog from a shelter. However...my concern in doing that is that it's usually hard to tell the exact "make-up" of the dog. Since his daughters have allergies, I would recommend a Maltese or a Bischon Frise.

He Shouls get an ASS Because he is one

  • Sharon Trusty - 3 years ago

I'm really shocked at some of these nasty comments. Some of you should seriously try to drop your political prejudices. Regardless of whether they will be living in the White House or a bungalow somewhere, this is a young family who obviously has been discussing adding a dog to their unit. Michele has publicly stated that her preference is to adopt a rescue. Good for her. A family with a heart.

  • Becca - 3 years ago

Shelter pets are THE BEST! Why not give a great home(the White House!) to an abandoned dog or puppy? I rescued a puppy from hurricane Katrina and she is the best dog I ever had...so smart, loving and loyal!

  • Missy - 3 years ago

They can get a perfectly good Christmas puppy at a shelter sometime in February or March.

  • Donna - 3 years ago

I think any one posting negative comments should be ashamed of themselves. The dog is for his girls. Just because you didnt vote for him doesnt mean you have to be a sore loser. Show some respect. Whether you like it or not he is the President of the United States.

  • wade v byrum - 3 years ago

A PITBULL BECAUSE THEY ARE MOST LIKELY TO ATTACK THEIR OWNER.

  • Dolci - 3 years ago

He should not get a dog....but take the money he would have used to buy a dog and spread it around....!

  • Caryl Kerns - 3 years ago

I'm a lab lover, but regardless what breed is selected, they should rescue one of many wonderful dogs needing forever homes.

  • Shelley D. - 3 years ago

I agree that they should get a doodle/Mix (Lab or Golden) from a shelter. They are sweet freindly dogs, easy to train. As far as the mean comments in this site, you guys should be ashamed of yourselves. If you can't say something nice you shouldn't say anything at all.

  • phyllis - 3 years ago

They should definitely adopt a shelter or rescue dog. Thousands are killed daily because no one wants them.

Basically the question was what breed should they get and I can't believe how many people said labradoodle like it is a real breed of dog. You do realize that it is just a mixed breed dog that some idiot decided to call a designer dog to get a load of money out of people. Hey mostly every dog in every shelter must be a designer dog as they are all mixes too. Maybe the shelters should call them designer dogs, charge $1,000 each so they can help other dogs.

Not too many years ago a labradoodle would have been considered and accident in breeding.

Hopefully the Obama's will stick with a shelter dog and become part of the solution and not the problem.

  • Carolyn Carl - 3 years ago

They should get a long haired English creme dachshund. I have one and it is a beautiful dog. It makes a wonderful house dog, is obedient, and super friendly. I have never had such a lovable puppy. And this breed would be great around kids.
