I am in agreement with you. My parents have the same views on Harry Potter, and I have no interest to read the books in the first place. Now, Lord of the Rings on the other hand, is amazing. The world of Middle-earth is something I love deeply.
Harry Potter had no morals in it that I see, unless you dig down deep to the point where the author didn’t even mean to put that moral there.
Thanks for standing up for your ideas!

I have read both the series so I am in a position to state my opinion although it is mostly in support of Harry Potter. There is no doubt about the enormous amount of creativity and skills that Mr. Tolkiens put into writing the books but the same can be said for Harry Potter(lets say HP) too.
The HP books are so intricately entwined that you wonder at the imagination of J K Rowling. They are more relatable, it being set in recent times, and many of us grew up along with Harry. The spells and incantations are the essence of the books. Wouldnt we children be fascinated upon reading that it is no easy life even if you have magic. Wizard students too have a lot to learn and are tormented by the punishments imparted by the teachers. Lotr on the other hand describes much older times and features mostly grown ups. And then due credit is not given to many characters, for example Tom Bombadil. Coming to the villians, Voldemort seems like a better one once you read the books. He is driven by the lust for power and will rest at nothing to gain it even if it means elimimating a teenager. He was defeated and he rose to power again and employed various strategies to kill Harry. He is like that- a bit paranoid, yet the most ruthless and cunning villain till date. No wonder the wizarding world shudders at his name. Sauron may be powerful but the fiery eye and the silhouette of a guy with horns who seems to be doing nothing weakens the image of an effective villain.
However I must admit that the casting director for the Lotr movies did a splendid job. And the locations were just too good. I cant decide whether I would like to go to Hogwarts more or spend a vacation in the Shire.
