The Panthers were not going to pay Ealy in 2018, they also were gonna cut him if he sucked in Training Camp. It makes perfect sense to unleash him now when teams will actually give up SOMETHING for him, instead of waiting til next year when teams will just wait for him to get cut.

This is Bill being Bill. His cost is low but the potential payoff is quite high. Carolina clearly did not want Ealy so it got a higher value pick rather than having to cut the guy.
