This is a tough one, but I have to go with the sentimental pick. When talking about what makes a film a classic, Ebert once said,

"A classic is a movie that you couldn't bear the thought of never being able to see again. I cannot bear the thought of never being able to see Casablanca again. No matter how many times I see it, it doesn't get worn down. I know what's going to happen, and nevertheless when it happens, it still has an affect on me."

That's certainly true of Casablanca for me as well. It also means Adam and Josh are monsters for forcing these kinds of decisions on me.

Casablanca vs. The Empire Strikes Back. That's the match-up I want to see at the end, a triumph over the tendency to dismiss great cinema that contains the elements of joy and fun.

Accessible does not equal low art.

What possible good comes out of this competition? All it marks is the death and destruction of EVERY SINGLE FILM EVER MADE except for one...so does ANYONE really win? I would say this is the saddest, most destructive, and impossibly morose event to EVER happen to cinema. THIS is what you have wrought, Adam and Josh. The blood of the children of cinema is all over your hands. You've killed more people in this competition than all of the horror movie villains represented in the competition combined. Freddy Krueger ain't got nothing on the Filmspotting Slashers. So enjoy your carnage. Take solace in your chaos.

If Citizen Kane vs. 2001 is the match-up of filmmaking artistry and technique, of style over substance (in a good way), this is the storytelling face-off. Both tell great stories unbelievably well, are acted and directed with consummate skill, and both screenplays rank as the best ever written. I'm voting for The Godfather, because it's the best movie I've ever seen, but Casablanca isn't far behind, and I wouldn't for a moment object to it winning. And let's face it, no matter what Adam and Filmspotting might say, both films will continue to exist, and I can watch EITHER ONE no matter which one wins.

It's funny how this bracket has made me take a bold stance against films I normally have a lot of respect for. I like the Godfather. But now I'm in the 'Anything but either Godfather camp'.

I'm also burnt out of crime family movies. There are so many great ones. 'Goodfellas', 'Once Upon the Time in America', 'Casino', 'Mean Streets', etc. etc. They all kind of blend together to me, and I'm worn out and retroactively discredit a film like The Godfather because of it.

In a bracket left with mostly cold movies following the acts of anti-heroes my vote goes for the remaining movie with the most genuine warmth and humanity. In this harsh world, there is enough crime, suspicion, and corporate greed. What we truly need now is Paris.

There is no wrong choice here.

If I'm picking my favorite, it's Casablanca, but I'm voting for the good of the cinematic world. I have to go Godfather. It's so cleverly crafted, every scene being perfect and essential to the story, and it had a monumental impact. Before The Godfather, movie gangsters sounded like The Penguin from the sixties Batman series. Coppola took the genre and made it Shakespearean. An iconic film that, for those whom have never seen it, will not only live up to the hype, but will exceed it.

This should have been given the chance to be the final battle. I fully expect the winner of this matchup to walk away with the entire thing.

Never take sides against the family. It's a gangland massacre as Godfather finally puts down the perpetually overrated Casablanca. Rick and Ilsa can have Paris, this tournament belongs to the Corleones.

    Here's to you, Godfather

Rick: If you don't vote for Casablanca you'll regret it. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon and for the rest of your life. Last week we said a great many things. You said I was to do the thinking for both of us. Well, I've done a lot of it since then, and it all adds up to one thing: we are voting for Casablanca and keeping it in the Pantheon where it belongs.
Now, you've got to listen to me! You have any idea what you'd have to look forward to if you stayed here? Nine chances out of ten, they will get rid of Citizen Kane, or Vertigo, they’d both wind up in a concentration camp. Isn't that true, Louie?
Capt. Renault: I'm afraid that Major Strasser would insist.
Ilsa: You're saying this only to make me vote.
Rick: I'm saying it because it's true. Inside of us, we both know Casablanca belongs here. You're part of this work, the thing that keeps us going. If Godfather wins and you didn’t vote for Casablanca, you'll regret it. Maybe not today. Maybe not tomorrow, but soon and for the rest of your life.

I just re-watched Casablanca, like barely a few minutes ago, and if I can't have my beloved Apartment, I will ride or die with Casablanca, an exquisitely structured film about how there are things more important than three people. It got very dusty in the room when Laszlo strikes up the Marseillaise over the Nazis beer hall shenanigans because it was so VERY NOW. Finding the strength to pursue resistance over the possibility of personal happiness or a movie about the success of a crime family every single time.

Plus, I really, really, really, really hate the idea of Godfather vs. Godfather II as a pantheon finals matchup.

  • Jeremy from Colorado - 7 years ago

Godfather is the Citizen Kane of mobster/crime movies.
Citizen Kane is the Godfather of all movies.

    How do you choose?

  • Olivier - 7 years ago

There seems to be a good chance to see a Godfather vs Godfather match-up in the final round and that could be fun. So The Godfather it is!

  • Brett from Newton, Mass. - 7 years ago

    This blows.

  • John Gonella - 7 years ago

This bracket, much like my NCAA bracket, gets difficult at the final eight. The couple of rounds I can make a pretty quick determination.

And then this. Splitting hairs, The Godfather loses just a bit of its brilliance in my eyes because its younger brother, Part II, is the superior film. Casablanca stands in no one's shadow.

    Keep playing, Sam.

  • Alex - 7 years ago

The Godfather is The Godfather. Casablanca is not.

  • Luke McDonald - 7 years ago

I don't even really know how to compare these movies. One causes me to shudder at encountering the potential of human evil and how our best intentions to avoid it come to nothing where the other is euphoric in its optimism. My only response is to stand proudly and sing Le Marseilles through my tears. The end of a beautiful friendship Godfather.

  • David Hoffman, Queens - 7 years ago

OK, Damn. I love both of these movies. They're two of my all time favorites. I'm going Casablanca. Why? Because I love the 2nd Godfather just as much - I'm a sucker for all the old New York stuff with DeNiro - and having both Godfather films in the final four just seemed silly.

  • Kevin Thompson - 7 years ago

There's still a chance Godfather 2 advances...I'll use that as my rationale not to go through the pain of deciding between these two powerhouses...play it again Sam

  • Brendan Carroll - 7 years ago

You take out Taxi Driver? Bogie sleeps with the fishes.

  • Mauricio Salas - 7 years ago

Why do you do this to us? this is by far the hardest one, there have been a lot of discussions around heart vs mind but both of this movies touch me deeply on both levels, they are movies you hear about constantly and once you get to see them it is impossible for them to live up to your expectations but for me they not only lived up, they surpassed any expectaion, this is just sad.

I think I voted for the Godfather ultimately but maybe I didn't the trauma of the choice shocked me so much I already forgot.

I feel like a part of me has died, gotta go with Godfather

    I hate all of this...
