Pulp Fictions change on cinema was that it cemented Quentin Tarantino's ability to keep making movies, and that is a great effect, but also possibly it's only great one. Most of the Tarantino-alikes have been lackluster, and the good ones probably would have happened anyway. The Godfather 2 cemented into corporate structures, for a while, the kind of film-making for which people venerate the 70's, and a kind that has never gone away. Even though it did leave the mainstream and became the purview of independent cinema, still personal film making thrives. It dominates every year's Top Ten lists. The Godfather 2's impact on film was wider, and most of those effects were preferable to those of Pulp Fiction, a film I love by a film-maker I hope does not stop after whatever he thinks is his 10th movie.

Seeing how you snubbed the actual greatest movie of all time, The Shawshank Redemption, by not even letting it in the tournament, I would say, at this point the winner has to be one of The Godfathers. I'll always know in my heart that it was all rigged from start.

There is nothing derogatory I can say about the Godfather II. It is a flawless adaptation of the source material, made by giants of cinema who are at the height of their powers. However, even disregarding that the source material would still exist upon the GF 2’s defeat, several television series (Breaking Bad, The Sopranos, The Wire, Deadwood, etc.) have explored the idea of conflicted organized crime figures and the family dynamics surrounding them, to equal effect.

Pulp Fiction, on the other hand, is a singular and uniquely cinematic experience. QT created unforgettable characters, pillaged and pilfered 100 years of moments from cinematic history and ran them through the blender of his warped imagination. What emerged was an endlessly rewatchable, darkly-comedic masterpiece that felt both revolutionary and revelatory of what had come before.

“If my answers frighten you, Adam and Josh, then you maybe you should cease asking scary questions.” It’s Pulp Fiction all the way.

You know how bad 70s movies look now? That's Pulp Fiction in the not-too-distant future.

  • brettmerryman - 7 years ago

Godfather II sidles up to Pulp Fiction, grabs its head and kisses it. "I know it was you Pulp Fiction. You took down Goodfellas. You broke my heart. YOU BROKE MY HEART."

  • Todd Cassel - 7 years ago

Damn you, Filmspotting Madness. Damn you.

I've been able to make my picks throughout this tournament without pause: every single one. And then you give me this....my three favorite movies of all time are Apocalypse Now, Godfather II and Pulp Fiction. Each time I watch one, I nod my head contentedly and say, "Yep, that's my favorite. That's it."

I last watched Godfather II. I guess it's time to pop in Pulp Fiction, because after a long, long pause; that's what I picked.

    Damn you.

My favourite Tarantino movie versus my second favourite Godfather movie. Pulp Fiction is probably the most important and defining movie of its decade, Godfather Part 2 is just a great sequel to an at least in my opinion better movie. Take it away, Quentin!

  • Mitka Alperovitz - 7 years ago

Cool, Fonzi's cool. I didn't plan to vote strategically, but I can't accept both Godfather's advancing. And I prefer the first.

  • Trevor (Toronto) - 7 years ago

It's going to be Godfather vs. Godfather Part II for the final isn't it? Yawn

  • Erin Teachman (Washington, DC) - 7 years ago

I'm just going to say it: Godfather Part II is the Bill Murray of Pantheon Madness. I understand how it got here, but now I just want it to go away. I turned on it after the Lebowski win (I am a massive film noir nerd and I did not take losing the best revisionist noir ever lightly, this dude did not abide well) and fine Star Wars can go as long as we still have Empire Strikes Back (we do, right? Yeah, ok, not all hope is lost - there is another). I would vote against the Godfather on principle at this point, but since it is up against Pulp Fiction, a crossover between the world of pulp noir washed through the kind of metaphysical talkiness I enjoy so much about Linklater's films, I am even happier to vote against it.

  • Luke Pamer - 7 years ago

If there can only be one film left in the desolate cosmos that is Filmspotting Madness, I'd choose Pulp Fiction. I didn't even love this film until the third time I had seen it. However, even though it took me time to understand the full scope of its greatness, I could never deny the energy or excitement I felt while watching it all unfold. The Godfather Part 2 is maybe a better all-around film. But my gut reaction tells me I would forever regret not hearing Samuel L. Jackson talk about French cheeseburgers in Tarantino's colorful language.

  • nathan tyree - 7 years ago

I can't believe that I am doing this, but I just voted for Pulp Fiction over Godfather II. The two Godfather films are obviously two of the greatest films ever made (and personal favorites of mine), but Pulp Fiction is possibly the most influential film of the last twenty years (and likely the next 50 years). I think that carries more weight.

  • Francisco Asmaeil - 7 years ago

This is where Pulp Fiction needs to die.

  • Jason Eaken - 7 years ago

Chris Massa with the total Tarantino blasphemy. A phase you went through in college? Wow.

"Godfather II" is a masterful saga, but "Pulp Fiction" changed the cinematic landscape. QT all the way.

  • John owen - 7 years ago

This was the hardest choice this round. So hard in fact that I had to flip a coin, heads Godfather 2 tails Pulp fiction. It came up tails, and the stab of pain in my heart at the thought of losing Godfather 2 made me break my own rule. I love both but Godfather 2 is so rich with texture, beauty, ugliness, elation, depression... I just can't live without it. If I could somehow hide Pulp fiction in some orifice somewhere for the duration of the tournament I would gladly do so.

  • Christopher Redmond - 7 years ago

It would be an adrenaline shot to the heart if Pulp Fiction managed to survive this show down. But please, let's not kill a bona fide masterpiece just to stick it the man, man.

  • Olivier - 7 years ago

I'm pretty sure even Tarantino would vote for The Godfather Part II...

Was having a discussion with a friend after Round 3 and he made an observation that resonated strongly. Pulp Fiction is the "Day in the Life" of film. The three pieces are serviceable to good movies, but on their own would not really rise to this level of notice. But the pastiche of the three-as-one (along with the electric dialogue and frenetic pacing) make it a textbook case of the sum far outstripping the pieces. Having said that (and despite it being endlessly watchable and re-watchable), I'm having to hand back my tasty burger and put a bullet in the big brain on Brett and go with a superior use of time and story jumping.

I've always thought Godfather II was top ten of all time JUST for the shot of Diane Keaton staring in despair and terror as the door is closing on her--an echo to the end of Part I--and it finally seems to click in her brain that Michael Corleone has lost his soul and she has lost her children. Add, oh about a hundred other shots, scenes, and bits of dialogue (and non-dialogue with young Vito) and it moves on.

Now, I'm hopping on my chopper and promising never to return lest Marsellus Wallace finds out how badly I've betrayed him. We cool like Fonzie?

"Hey everyone...they made a mistake. Goodfellas...you won round 3. This is not a joke...I'm afraid they wrote the wrong thing. Goodfellas...best of round 3."

Not only the best sequel of all time, but the best prequel, the best gangster film, and perhaps the best film of all time. However, if anything in this life is certain, if Filmspotting Madness has taught us anything, it is that you can kill anyone. Even a number 2 seed. But please don't happen.

  • Aaron - 7 years ago

This one was the hardest this round. And I'm going to go against the grain and say that Goodfellas is overrated (in fact, I kinda feel that way about Scorsese in general, Taxi Driver excluded). Though it warrants a re-watch, as I was expecting it to be more like The Godfather than it deserved, and it definitely wasn't The Godfather. I'm glad Pulp Fiction beat that, and while I love The Godfather Part II, I already voted for the first Godfather (and in my mind it's the superior of the Godfather series), so I'm giving this one to Pulp Fiction.

  • Brett from Newton, Mass. - 7 years ago

This sucks and blows. This is wrong, wrong, wrong. What did we ever do to you?

  • John Gonella - 7 years ago

Quentin, I love Pulp Fiction, but your match up is going to come up first next week for Adam and Josh fr the biggest disparity n voting. You are flashier, your dialogue is more witty, the chronological thread is fascinating, but you are going to get beat down this week. That is how damn good The Godfather II really is.

  • Katie - 7 years ago

Maybe I just need to re-watch Pulp Fiction, but this is the easiest decision of the bunch for me. Godfather Part II all the way!

  • Alex - 7 years ago

I LOVE both of these movies. I do like The Godfather: Part I better, but it's so close to me. Ultimately, I just like Pulp Fiction a little better than both. I feel a little bad saying that.

  • I'm not the biggest fan of Godfather 2, and I've never understood why some people rank it higher than the original. But you know what happened? I sat down to rewatch it, which I haven't done in years, and I have to admit that I've been underrating it. My word, but Coppola knew what he was doing! In other words, Godfather 2 is a movie that I'll be revisiting very soon, and I'm sure my appreciation for it will only grow. Pulp Fiction, on the other hand, feels like a phase I went through in college. A very good phase, and one that I'm glad I went through, but not one I feel the need to re-live for some time.

    PULP FICTION is overrated.

  • Luke McDonald - 7 years ago

Taking out Lebowski is akin to going against the family.

  • I've been ordered to take out Pulp Fiction by the Goodfellas..sorry Tarantino but I want to be a 'made man'

  • Brendan Carroll - 7 years ago

And that's not even going into the scene where Tarantino hurls around the N word like it's nothing.

  • Brendan Carroll - 7 years ago

If you voted for QT against Good Fellas, I don't want to know you. I seriously don't know what I'm gonna do if this beats the greatest sequel that has ever existed.

  • Dan - 7 years ago

You'll be hard-pressed to find anyone who loves The Godfather franchise more than myself. However, I've always been the naysayer when it comes to folks saying "the sequel is better than the original." The original Godfather is a perfect, well-contained film, building a story with fantastic characters and pacing, with a fascinating character arc for Michael. Godfather 2 certainly expands upon the foundation laid by its predecessor, and has some moments that should solidify its status as one of the greatest films ever made, but is, dare I say it, bloated. It could have been just as thematically strong without delving as far as it does into Hyman Roth's enterprise and the confusing Frank Pantangeli assassination attempt. I will always defend The Godfather over its great, but slightly overrated, sequel. Thus, the Tarantino masterpiece, an endlessly rewatchable kaleidoscope of character, dialogue, and inventive narrative, paced in a way that makes its run time fly by, wins over the crime epic that owes every ounce of its greatness to its superior predecessor.

well this one really made me pause! Pulp Fiction had such an effect on my journey with films watching it as a teenager and listening to the soundtrack on repeat for years.. but I'm voting G2.. I keep re watching the G films (minus 3) and they just get better and better.. I haven't seen Pulp since I was in my early 20s and something about letting it live in nostalgia feels right, I just want to see Michael Corleone swivel in his big leather chair over and over.. Pulp Fiction is Tarantino's best but G2 is pure magic film mastery- nothing gets better!

  • Benji - 7 years ago

The descision making process for some of these has been quick when I see one of the options as an over-rated movie. I'm struggling with this one because I think they are both over-rated. I loved Pulp Fiction so much when it came out but on re-watch is so outdated and lame. I picked it anyway. I don't ever want to sit through Godfather 2 again.

  • Matt Mitchell - 7 years ago

In voting for the last couple rounds, I had this thought: what sense does a sequel make in a universe where it's predecessor doesn't existed? Much of the love Godfather II and The Empire Strikes Back derives from the regard for their preceding films and how these films improved upon their respective predecessor. Thus, I voted for the Godfather and Star Wars, and against Godfather II and Empire, in the previous round. Thus, even though I think Godfather II is the better film, Pulp Fiction gets my vote.
