Do you agree with Sheriff Penzone's decision to close 'Tent City'?

Our jails are overcrowded largely by ILLEGALS. I spent a short time in a jail building over 10 years ago and I would much preferred the tents. The first 3 days were in a small room maybe 8' by 8' that had to share with two other inmates. I did my time and learned my lesson. The tent city may seem inhumane to some but the this quote from yesterday's posting puts it very well.

" I went to tent City and guess what? I became a law abiding citizen who contributes to society in a positive manner and haven't committed a crime beyond a traffic ticket in the 20 years since. If you think housing inmates in tents versus keeping them caged up in buildings is worse or inhumane, you need a reality check and I dare you to stay inside a brick and mortar jail and see how much ppl are treated and act like animals when the are in a more confined space. If those tents we're good enough for the heros of our military to be housed in, they are acceptable to house people who committed crimes,..."

LOL - that's a good one! "Since Penzone released all of the illegal immigrants..." Tell me some more - I need a good laugh. Penzone didn't release ANYONE - illegal immigrant or not. The policy for courtesy holds for ICE has changed as instructed by Ultra Conservative Right County Attorney Bill Montgomery. Read it. And then read it again if you didn't figure it out the first time through -

    http://www.azfamily.com/story/34602028/sheriff-paul-penzone-changes-procedure-on-facilitating-ice-courtesy-holds?autostart=true

Furthermore, both the jails and Tent City have been filled to far below capacity for a LONG TIME. This is no new news and was confirmed by the Review Committee and it is so annoying when persons of a certain political persuasion insist upon screaming ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT, thinking that if they say it loud lyand frequently enough, it makes it true.

The most dangerous untruths are truths which have been moderately distorted.

The only reason there is room in the jails is because Penzone released all the illegal immigrants. What an idiot! Tent City is no picnic. If you do the crime you do the time. Tent City is HOT HOT HOT in the Spring and Summer and rather chilly in the Winter. The only thing it really has going for it is a little more freedom to walk around and exercise, rather than sit in a jail cell and rot away. I think Tent City is more Humane. Does everyone think our taxes will go down because of it's closing? Well, then you're dreaming because they won't.

Only time will tell. I agree with the others. I will predict that the numbers in the county jails will go up. The reason it is not full is because criminals do NOT want to go into the tent city. Looks like some of the bleeding hearts from CALIFORNIA have migrated to Arizona. Too bad for Arizona.

Want to find out how effective this jail was? Just check into how many criminals who were incarcerated here returned, in comparison with the other jails. I think you will find that this jail worked. Thanks to the bleeding heart liberals the criminals are getting more rights all the time and jails are becoming less of a deterrent all the time.

Did any of you nay-sayers read the article or follow the advisory committee determinations? (Oh, wait, don't answer that.) Tent City is "preferred" by the inmates. Most don't consider it as much of a punishment as the jails, and would rather be out and about than locked up inside. Neither the jails nor Tent City are any where near filled to capacity, but Tent City costs millions of (your tax payer) dollars to run and the staffing is needed indoors. It is more secure and safe for the detention officers indoors in a more controlled environment. Whether you loved Joe or despised him really makes no difference in this matter. Tent City may have been a good idea when it was born, but it has outlived its usefulness, effectiveness and fiscal value. It really has nothing to do with "those Liberals" and everything to do with fiscal responsibility and safety and efficiency of staffing.

It's ok for our military to live in tents, but not convicted criminals? Give me a break

Much like our new publicity chasing Twit(ter)-In-Chief, Arpaio did absolutely nothing unless he could get some self-aggrandizing publicity out of it. His cartoon version of was and is a ridiculous pander to the "string 'em up" mentality and gullibility of so many out here in the wild, wild west. And as for the tough on crime, no-nonsense image Arpaio has spent his career cultivating--just a couple of snippets from a 2003 'ten years later' article:

"Some inmates such as Tempe residents Sarah Hitterman, 22, and Tonya Anne Goddard, 18, don't mind living in Tent City. They talked about the outdoor jail while dressed in their gray-and-white uniforms and sitting at a metal table in the day room visiting with fellow inmates and sipping from water bottles.

"You've got freedom here," said Hitterman, who is serving time on drug and prostitution charges. "You don't have to be locked down. You don't have to go to bed at a certain time and you can go outside.""

"Sheriff Joe Arpaio has a lot to be proud of. Tent City is a tremendous accomplishment if you consider the fact it is the largest open-air drug market in the western United States. Drugs are readily available because people just throw them over the wire fence," Hentoff said.

Arizonans support law and order, no looters or riots here. We have a right to carry guns and we have tent city. Lots of room for tents to house low-life criminals in the 100 degree Desert heat. We also have pink underwear and green bologna for the Gangstas who come here thinking it's Ferguson.

The liberals hate Joe and what he has done for 30 years. He is doing what the Arizona voters want him to do and was the most popular elected official in the state. Tent city has been challenged many time and it took just one defective liberal to undo what the people want. He is done and will never get re-elected.

This is what happens when you elect a bleeding heart liberal. I think Penzone should be recalled.

This idiot just wants to undo anything Arpaio has done is all. He's obviously a prideful, egotistical prick. Has he shown HOW tent city is "not cost effective?" No! He just SAYS it's not and we're supposed to believe him? Utter bullish-t. I agree with other commenters, jails will continue to fill and we'll continue paying our hard earned money to keep these criminals nice and comfy. And hello? They were "animals" before they got there, that's what PUT them there, you PC bleeding heart pukes. Get a clue!

  • PenzoneAsCorruptAsArpaio - 7 years ago

Why are City of Phoenix residents still paying a jail tax on every single water bill? Shutting down tent City will be less cost effective in the long-term, just wait. I went to tent City and guess what? I became a law abiding citizen who contributes to society in a positive manner and haven't committed a crime beyond a traffic ticket in the 20 years since. If you think housing inmates in tents versus keeping them caged up in buildings is worse or inhumane, you need a reality check and I dare you to stay inside a brick and mortar jail and see how much ppl are treated and act like animals when the are in a more confined space. If those tents we're good enough for the heros of our military to be housed in, they are acceptable to house people who committed crimes, get real.

  • Joseph - 7 years ago

Yes, shut that shit down its about time people are not animals,

  • Billy - 7 years ago

No I don't agree. Remember Paul Penzone you are running a jail not a hotel. Take away tv, air conditioning and a comfortable cell and put them outside in cheap tents. How is this not cost effective? Little to no electricity from heat/ac little to no upkeep on maintenance it's a tent!!

  • jim - 7 years ago

I don't think its a good idea to close tent city because now when they run out of room Penzone is going to want to build more jail rooms with ac and cable tv now these people are going to want to stay, tent city was not made for hard time criminals. Don't forget it going to be the tax payers paying for a bigger jail.........

Paul Penzone: The criminals best friend...

  • jerry - 7 years ago

I would ask the inmates what they think? have a feeling they like the idea of tent city and think it does them good, although they would have a hard time admitting it to a civilian(citizen)
