How should we refer to people on the autism spectrum?

Of course you refer to a person by their name. Putting that as an option doesn't even make sense. A someone on the spectrum, I hate "has autism". I don't have anything, I'm autistic. For better or worse, it's who I am.

I refer to my son first by his name. Then offer more info, saying he has autism. Then if the conversation furthers, or is nessesary, i will describe that hes high functioning, and what that means and does not mean. If he was more severe, i would describe him as Autistic. I think the reference would differ, case to case, situation from situation. But however you choose, i will not pressure someone else to adopt the same wording as me, as more appropriate..I also have autism. If it comes up...it comes up. Its really a need to know basis. I find it helpful at times to share, and other times- not. I think the options above are all appropriate ways to word the same idea.
