I like "Land run park & think it is a great idea to move the Centennial Land Run Monuments should be moved there as well.

  • Barbara Allen - 7 years ago

Tell David Payne there is a Redbird Park already in Marlow.

  • Michael Derksen - 7 years ago

I wish people could understand that the sculpture above I-40 is the SKYDANCE BRIDGE. Not the scissor tail bridge. The SKYDANCE is the name for the flight of the scissor tail. So those who think that the bridge does not look like a scissor tail, you are correct. It is not meant to look like a scissor tail.
With that said, Land Run Park is probably the best out of the aforementioned names in my opinion.

  • MJ - 7 years ago

I like Land Run Park and relocating the sculptures there. It makes total sense to me. Don't understand why Land Run Park was not listed as a contender. Does someone making the decision have their own agenda?

  • Sam Miller - 7 years ago

The Scissortail Flycatcher is a unique and beautiful bird native to our state.
The landrun is an event that should not be honored or commemorated because it was a abomination!

  • Russell T Jimmies - 7 years ago

We should name it Fallins' Failure.

  • Ro Carter - 7 years ago

Land Run Park??? Seriously??? So racist!

  • Scott Husband - 7 years ago

It should be named f@@k the education of our children let's build a park instead.

  • V kelley - 7 years ago

    Land run park is perfect!!

  • Lisa Tehauno - 7 years ago

The name Land Run park hearkens back to the theft of Oklahoma from Native people. Real history reveals that the US Government promised this territory to the "Indians" then the land was stolen in a so called land run. A better name for the park might be "Stolen Land Park"

  • Marie - 7 years ago

We have the most beautiful, awesome Sunrises & Sunsets. It should. e named Painted Sky Park!!

  • George - 7 years ago

The land run did not take land away from anyone, it was UNASIGNED land that no tribe had been granted

  • Dan Baade - 7 years ago

LAND RUN PARK! I thought I was the only one left out when I thought of that and submitted it to the Daily Oklahoman. Forget the regrets of the tribes and the Indian Removals. Forget the blank appeals to symbols of wildlife and empty colored skies. Go for the optimism and courage of the Land Run! We are the only city in the world born in one day. Right on the spot of this park. Call it what that unique spot is. The LAND RUN! And move that beautiful multiple sculpture with pieces to be added out of the backwoods parking lot , where it now hides, to the prominence it deserves in our new LAND RUN PARK!

Kelly Ogle and his suggestion for the name for the new park is quite appropriate! The "LAND RUN PARK" is awesome!! Plus moving the monuments would be great. I didn't even realize they were there. I know I don't live in OKC however, I think they would be much more accessible in the new park. I'm quite sure If the "powers that be" gave the public a CHOICE", the "Land Run Park" would be a hit!!!! It's kind of like "who votes on the license tags"?? Kelly you have a lot of Ponca City people's votes!!

All of the suggestions pretty much suck.
You have to have good imagination too make a Scissortail out of that bridge. Looks more like a chicken's foot.

  • Renee - 7 years ago

Oklahoma citizens include more than just white people. The land run, while a wonderful opportunity for those who participated, was a result of taking land previously given to native tribes. This is the reason I object to the name Land Run Park.
The scissortail is Oklahoma's state bird, and is beautiful. While it's clear not everyone likes the name Scissortail Park, I think it's one that can be celebrated by everyone.

    Reference from www.OKhistory.org:
American Indians and the Land for the Run

American Indians viewed the land run very differently than the settlers. While those who made the run saw the situation as an opportunity to claim free land, American Indians feared they may soon again lose even more land. In varying times during the nineteenth century, tribes had been forced from their ancestral homelands to reservations in present-day Oklahoma. Then, tribes were forced to accept individual allotments with the Dawes Act in 1887, which again reduced their land. The resulting land cleared of tribal ownership resulted in available land for the run.

After Boomers, such as David Payne, continually violated Indian treaties by encroaching on their land, the United States government finally relented and in 1885, passed an Indian Appropriations Act to allow natives to sell their unoccupied land. Furthermore, in 1889, President Grover Cleveland passed a new Indian Appropriations Act on March 2, 1889, which opened up these Unassigned Lands to settlers, which was distributed by land runs

Horrible choice in names and if what news 9 said is true then you need a new panel seeing how the names in the list where not citizen driven. Landrun was a perfect name with a perfect theme and was very fitting for something unique. That scissor tail monstrosity that every one always asks what is that looks like a Crane wreck. Time for a redo. Else naming this park goes against everything you told people on how it would get named.

  • James keene - 7 years ago

While land run is a good name also you have to know there were many land runs in okla not just okc therefore Scissortail is best of those listed. I'm a transplanted Okie from WVa and I love my state bird Cardinal and also the Scissortail flycatcher. I always hear good comments on our bridge when I travel to other states.

  • Terry Johnston - 7 years ago

I love it Kelly! And I've been an Okie all of my 61 years I've met your brother Kevin you guys are fabulous!

  • Debbie T. - 7 years ago

Get a new panel! Get your history books out people. We don't need a name that sounds like a golf course! Look at where this state came from!
Trail of Tears, Home of the red man, five tribes, Indian Territory, Sooners, Okies
Surely there's a better name than what has been offered. !! No more Scissortail birds ! It's not a bird park.
    Redbud Park
    Landrun Park
    Indian Trail Park
    Sooner Park
    Buffalo Plains Park
Let's get all of those beautiful cattle tail art pieces moved to the park where they can be enjoyed and not just scattered willy nilly all over town.

  • Kay Kosanke - 7 years ago

Land Run Park is the only one that makes sense and visitors will understand the meaning. I do not care for any of the suggested names to vote for. Who is on this committee? I've never heard.

  • Cheryl - 7 years ago

Land Run Park - distinctively Oklahoma! I think Kelly's suggestion of naming the park Land Run Park and moving the sculptures so they can be enjoyed makes perfect sense. but then how often does our government do what makes sense.

  • Sonia - 7 years ago

Let me scissor your tail park! Classic! I love it! Haha

  • R J Darrow - 7 years ago

    How about stolen land park?

  • V. - 7 years ago

Land Run Park or Painted Sky Park. Also, move the statues so they can be seen!

  • Henry Latimer - 7 years ago

Kelly, I thought you had a great idea to name the park Landrun Park and moving the Landrun sculptures to the park is perfect. The sculptures are wasted where they are now. Is the committee from Dallas?

  • Janet Cameron - 7 years ago

I think many people are trying to rewrite Oklahoma's history. Last year while preparing my second graders Land Run celebration that included "running for land" to settle on for a picnic lunch. My principal edited my parent note and took out the words Land Run and settle. She said to not use those words, to just call it Pioneer Day because people could be offended. I left education, I was offended by her act of trying to rewrite history.

  • Stevenia Welch - 7 years ago

I, like Kelly, prefer a name that signifies the state of Oklahoma! Frankly, I'm sick of hearing about the state bird! Why not a name that truly represents our state? The committee sounds like a bunch of snowflakes instead of true Okies who know the meaning of the name Oklahoma and know the origin of Oklahoma. Oklahoma City is a recognized representation nationwide therefore they need to show the pride of Oklahoma and who we are. Not east coast anot west coast but unique in our founding with the land run and our Indian heritage.

  • Laura Weir - 7 years ago

Landrun park - it was Oklahoma's beginning. Very, very few of the others have anything to do with our state. Some were not even suggested by the public? Really? And move the sculpture's. Another time where those in power do not listen to the citizens!

  • Larry Guidry - 7 years ago

Who are these Yahoos Who pick the name for the new OKC park , I like Kelly's idea of Land Run Park, move the land run statue to the new park. The same Yahoo!'s who put the bird on Oklahomas coin!

  • Mark hicks - 7 years ago

Dont know who came up with this scissortail stuff. I think the scissor tail eye sore on I 40 should be torn down. The new license plate replaced and lets face it landrun park is much more suitable for a park with land run statues

  • Charlotte - 7 years ago

Kelly is right ..Keep it real Land Run Park is right on the money! Go Kelly.!!

  • Becky M - 7 years ago

I like Kelly's idea best! Land run park & moved the sculpture there!

  • Carol - 7 years ago

I like Land Run park. It doesn't have anything to do with Mr.Ogle. I think the Land Run sculpture should be moved no matter what the park is named. If not to the park then somewhere it can be viewed by walking up to it and also see a tribute sign to the sculpturer. I could see it when I-40 was more downtown but never knew how to get there. But I can't see it at all now.

  • F - 7 years ago

I hope you all realize that this is just a random "polldaddy" site established by News9, presumably because Mr. Ogle can't stand the fact that Land Run Park is not included on the official list of potential names for the park. You can vote for the future park's name at http://newsok.com/Name-The-Park.

  • Kim D - 7 years ago

Skydance Park sounds better than Skydance Green IMO and flows with the pedestrian bridge. Monuments on the canal that can be seen passing by on I40 should stay where they are. They were made specifically to fit the canal.

  • Diane B. - 7 years ago

I like Kelly Ogle's suggestion of Landrun Park and moving the Landrun statues to a prominent position in the park where they can be seen (as opposed to where they are not seen now)!

  • David Afonso - 7 years ago

It's sounds perfect fit for Scissortail Park or Prairie River Park.

  • Karen Edwards - 7 years ago

I like scissortail park, because that's our state bird????????

  • Steve Lyons - 7 years ago

Don't like any of them I like Land Run Park

  • Rosa Fisher - 7 years ago

Prairie River sounds peaceful and as a reminder of all the prairie land that this used to be and all the Pioneers hard-working farmers and every other worker that has built something in the state of Oklahoma this should be called the Prairie lands River to remind Oklahoma of all the hard-working people and all the peaceful things that Oklahoma brings to its citizens no matter who or what you are you are an Oklahoman American

  • Yancy Timberland - 7 years ago

Painted Sky Park is the best name. We have the bridge and it's absurd. Something new!!

  • Connie Kimmel - 7 years ago

Even though I'm not crazy about the sissor tail bridge I still thinks it's Sissor Tail Park is the one for the state!

  • Vince Larsen - 7 years ago

    Painted Sky is the best

  • JQ Welch - 7 years ago

Scissortail Park sounds...dumb. Painted Sky Park all the way.

  • Waylon L. - 7 years ago

    Anything but Scissortail!!!!!!

  • Vicki Kelley - 7 years ago

    Anything but scissor tail

  • Tom Trammell - 7 years ago

I like Landrun park. It is where the City begain.

  • Tami - 7 years ago

Scissortail Flycatcher is our state bird. Fitting name for the park

  • Linda Craig - 7 years ago

Scissortail Park shows our Oklahoma heritage.

  • Bertha - 7 years ago

Scissortail Park - at least it relates to Oklahoma and the OKC area. If you have never seen a Scisdortail flying around on a summer day, you have missed a beautiful site!

  • Phyllis bishop - 7 years ago

    Prairie river park. Sounds peacefup

  • Barbara Murcer-Green - 7 years ago

Love Scissortail Park! Carries the Scissortail theme we already have on the cross town bridge.
