Do you think Fort Wayne residents should be allowed to keep chickens?

I would much rather have a neighbor with chickens as one with a BARKING dog.

this is seriously stupid. just increases the number of calls police and animal control will get and increases the chances that people will get bird flu and other disease that birds carry. there will be dead chickens all over the place. dogs will not sit around and think about chickens being pets.

I do not live in Ft Wayne but I do live in a small town north of Ft Wayne. I think every one knows that times are getting harder and harder for ppl to live. Grocery stores prices continue to rise and there are So many ppl out there in northeast Indiana that live pay check to pay check. I think if a person has the money to buy the chickens and care for them in every aspect, then they should be able to have them in Ft Wayne or any other smaller town nearby. Food banks and some churches give out food but if a person could have a few chickens to go along with that it might, just might turn their life around and open up a whole new world for them. A world of accomplishment, satisfaction and pride in themselves for actually doing some thing that can give them some food for themselves and their family. GOD BLESS and I hope this rule is over turned for the sake of the people. Thank You for letting me voice my opinion.

I live downtown and had 6 egg laying chickens for a year, until a neighbors dog (that was left outside while the owner was on vacation) dug under my fence and killed 3 of them. A concerned neighbor called animal control to get the dog out of my yard, acc then informed me that although no complaints have been made (the neighborhood loved those friendly and quiet birds) I would have 1 week to find a new home or surrender them. My daughter and I found a good home but will lose out on the experience and fresh eggs. Btw they were free range and I knew all the ingredients of the food.

What's the difference between dogs and chickens. Don't dogs bark when you walk by? We had neighbors who had chickens and it wasn't that bad. Let people have a chicken it two. It isn't hurting anyone.

First, people have a right to do what they want on their own property. Second, if the ordinance bans roosters whats the problem. Third, this city government wants to raise income taxes again and most on the council and the mayor are bleeding heart liberals, let the people be able to save some money. They want the city to reflect other "liberal" cities so why not let the people have a few chickens.

I am a city resident, I vote and pay taxes. I have a large yard and a garden and would like very much to have a couple chickens to control pests. They also do provide great eggs that are much better than the store kind. People who compare this to domestic pets and suggest that the city might be overrun with feral chickens are just being ridiculous, there is no evidence of this in any city where it has been tried. The city would still retain authority to make ordinance and regulation in response to any issue that may occur. Having a few chickens is a way for people to enjoy their lives and homes if that is their inclination. As a good example, if I had chickens in my garden, I would be using a smaller amount of fewer chemicals to control pests because the chickens would spend their days eating them.

Are you kidding me? How ridiculous. There is a big enough issue with cats and dogs that are not controlled.
What do you city people think, that you'll get "free range eggs?" Ha! What are you going to do, run to Rural King and pick up chicken feed made by some company and that has unknown ingredients in it, and most likely imported from China?
Leave farm animals to the farmers.
Chicken poop on the mayors new river front...Laughable.........

There are bigger cities in this country that allow chickens! The limit is usually kept at 6 with no roosters. As long as the owners are keeping track of waste disposal (which is great for backyard gardens) they shouldn't have issues in town. Chickens don't normally violate noise ordinances as much as dogs do. I have had chickens for three years and haven't had to call police or pest control or anyone else about my girls.
