Should construction on Site C be halted while a review takes place?

It was a serious error not to allow this project to be scrutinized by the B.C. Utilities Commission. Stop Site C Dam work. Nothing further should occur until a proper decision based on fact is brought forward and thoroughly investigated.
There are many different viewpoints mentioned here and after reading them all I would like to focus on a few points made.
First I look at the peoples comments regarding the validity of the decision from this poll. The people who cheated should certainly not be trusted where their viewpoints are concerned. Trying to change this poll shows me that they are afraid to honestly take part. Even with their cheating the 75+% shows the decision goes against their position.
Secondly. Throwing caution to the wind and forcing a very costly project through is not in the best interests of the people of this Province. There is no reason that 9 billion + dollars should ever be spent without as much investigation and information as is possible to acquire. This was not done by the B.C. Liberals.
Saying that the Green Party receiving such a small amount of votes should never be in the position of power they are in, is another point that I have issues with. After every vote in this Province of British Columbia was counted the NDP and the Green Party represented the will of a majority of voters in this Province. No one says anything at all when the Socreds, the Conservatives and the Liberals all join together to give the Liberal Party the position of power in the B.C. Legislature. I would say one thing further about the votes. The partnership should be broadened even more. If in fact we do go into another election, the N.D.P. and the Green Party should work together to ensure that the peoples votes are not split. Each riding should have either a Green Party or a N.D.P. person running to ensure the vote is not split between the two parties. I believe this would go a long way towards ensuring the voters have fair representation in the B.C. Legislature. To be clear I am saying 'IF' a new election is called this is what we should do to ensure the Liberal Party loses power. The manner in which our elections occur should be addressed in the B.C. Legislative Assembly to have some of the issues addressed for future elections but if there is another election called to stop the power from being controlled by the N.D.P. and Green Party we need to ensure the majority of voters have their wishes respected.
The last thing I would like to focus on here is I have experienced issues with the B.C. Liberals for many years (since Gordon Campbell was the Mayor of Vancouver). I have experienced the callous manipulation of the laws and morals of the people of this Province and instead focusing on those corporations and individuals from around the world who paid the Liberals massive amounts of money to do what they want in this Province. Wealthy people from around the world need to be stopped from getting what they want through the payment of bribes to those supposedly representing the interests of British Columbians. The Liberal Party should hide their faces in SHAME for a very long time. Exactly how much they received for selling us out should be investigated and those who accepted bribes to sell us out need to be held accountable. Let's just get on with it. Put the 2200+ people to work in other areas so they can still feed their families and begin heading toward a healthier & happier Province.

With our roads and infrastructure wasting away, there should be more than enough jobs for those Site C workers to rebuild, repair and create a better BC then continue on with this money sucking us to bankruptcy project.

Sean wrote, "Only the ndp and green party know how to shut down jobs get them out of government these two parties will destroy our provience" Well, Sean, you need to learn how to spell, punctuate, investigate and actually reason things out. For instance, I don't think the Greens have ever been in power and the NDP hasn't been in power for a very, very long time. You should investigate the BC Libs' actions from ye olde Gordon Campbell's time to now...then you'd get a glimmer of the extent of the BC Libs' incompetence and their penchant for wasting taxpayers' funds (without even mentioning how much booze was consumed and how much corruption likely went on). With a little research, you should discover how many BC jobs disappeared during the BC Libs' tender tenure, and you'd also find out which government actually pays E.I. Happy researching! But don't quit questioning or criticizing anything, for your mind is actually working. So many people don't question a damn thing and they remain gullible, even at voting time. Hopefully, you'll do more research;)

about the people who might be put out of work: they shouldn't have had this work in the first place, and they are draining taxpayers' pockets by proceeding on this make-work scam. Kill it now.

I would suggest that the people who oppose the project look deeper into the details of what they quote. First of all it Is a project that is to ensure BC has enough clean energy for the future not to be compared with today's needs as the NDP\Green are doing. Secondly the environmental impact has been greatly exaggerated I am a residence of the Peace area and can not believe how people west of the Rockies who are so uninformed oppose the project based on what the hear as they sit at Starbucks sipping there lattes. Here we are trying to break our fossil fuel dependency but yet refuse to accept a clean energy project. The argument is we should be looking at wind and solar power. Anybody who has actually done research into it realizes that solar and wind are unreliable power that requires a huge footprint to generate comparable power to a dam. Wind projects has failed in Europe and are being abandoned because it is unreliable and kill millions of birds a year. Scrap Site C and go to what ? Coal. We can not deny we need the power in the future. Speaking of needing it in the future, why build it now when we need it in the future ? With the current oil slump in the oil and gas industry it is the perfect time to build with resources available and contractors desperate for work.
Environmentally I would suggest the people who are opposed take a trip to the area and see it first hand and talk to the licals who live in the area besides the Boons. The claim is it is some of the most fertile farm land in BC but yet barely anything is grown there except hay. If this land can feed 1million people why isn't it being farmed to feed 1 million people. What is not mentioned is that the total hectares that is always quoted is not all Class 1 farm land most is Class5 which is why they grow hay. If that land can feed 1 million the rest of the farm land up here could easily feed the rest of Canada and more. Does not make sense does it?
I am not pro Site C or against it but do care about my region. BC Hydro has offered to have monthly meetings to listen to concerns and work with local residence. They have been cancelled because no one ever shows up. There are no protesters hanging up here. The city is not littered with signs to stop the dam. The majority of people here understand the need for the project and are informed to what impacts it will have and why do we not oppose it because we know our region and we can separate what's being exaggerated from the truth because it is our back yard.

Horgan and Weaver didn't even bother to visit the Peace Region to talk to the locals, to talk to the people who work the project whose families are now stressed because they were on the verge of losing their houses before the project started. Weaver was all for the project before he realized that politically it would be better not to explain the truth but join the hysterica. Horgan is just plain out of touch and is a knee jerk politiction. The comment of how the site c workers can go build schools and roads or how we can all become loggers because they are gojng to kickstart the forest industry up here shows it.

I do not believe BC voted for the NDP to govern our province with a Green gun to their heads. A province can not be governed by forcing the views of its most populated areas onto the rest of us and our neighbors to the west.
Horgan and Weaver are alienating everyone outside of the lower mainland and Vancouver Island. Welcome to the new Quebec

We killed it in the 80s, why did Christy Creme bring it back. Kill the thing, its a total waste of money and horrible for the environment.

No more expensive dam projects. Direct these Billions of BC tax dollars in to green energy creation, instead of filling the pockets of the BC LIEberal cronies and their construction companies. Quit destroying major areas of our wonderful province.

Help the disabled and veterans by returning the $45/ year bus pass, instead of stealing food money because of the insane increased bus pass of $91/ month. That's over a $1,000 more annually and a lot of meals wasted.

The BC LIEberals get money from Americans and are privatizing Canadian assets (this is theft from Canadians.)

  • Shawn Warsh - 7 years ago

actually it doesn't let you vote more than once. if you bothered to read the script after attempting to. and yeah just scrap this idiotic project already. everything it would flood is worth more than it could ever generate.

  • Clayton - 7 years ago

All you people complaining about job losses..
It's a NINE BILLION dollar project that we can't use, we literally can't use it.
You think that spending NINE BILLION dollars to feed a few families is economically sound?
For that money there are other projects that can be had that we do need, that don't destroy land and homes.
It's a very selfish person who thinks their grand children and great grand children should be on the hook for NINE BILLION dollars just so you have a job.

As for the USA comment, BC Hydro was overcharging California on rates, true that BCHydro should be able to charge what they want, unfortunately they can't so what California didn't pay was the extra charge that BC Hydro shouldn't have charged them.

With regards to people going on EI.. The Canadian EI fund has billions of dollars in it, so much money in fact the Feds take out over a billion a year to help balance the budget (in essence, it's as much a tax as a fund for those who find themselves unemployed.
So what if these people go on EI for a few months, they get the summer off to enjoy.
The EI fund is Federal money that is there to be spent that isn't being spent where it should be.

The people working at the dam don't care if it isn't needed, they don't care about the land, the people who live on the land and they don't care about what this will cost their future generations so really, I could care less about them, there is no room for selfishness..

    It's being hoarded...

  • B.Dezz - 7 years ago

Definitely needs review and should be on halt until reviewed!
Many things not right. 1-why build up here and destroy prime land...farms and crown to place transmission lines to south when there are dams there that could be used
2 why should BC citizens pay for Hydro going to US. And they get it cheaper then us!
3- doesn't US still owe BC hydro millions from previous hydro delivered and still using and now we sell for less then half price! Now you from BC, weather working there or not have to pay for it?

  • T Streeter - 7 years ago

Scrap it! No reviews, no more delays, its a political project and if you live by the sword you die by the sword. Sorry Site C, you lost, the rest of BC won.

  • Robert Loranger - 7 years ago

I voted and I am out of Province so your poll will not be accurate of actual B.C.people and the good of your Province is being sacrificed because of a indecisive election and pure partisan politics. The three parties should put their differences a side and govern in a coalition government with all parties taking part for at least a year while each puts forward a clear road ahead for the future by then may be the people will be able to decide where they are headed and act like concerned citizens and not like our neighbour's to the south. It is sad if any government with a majority of one thinks they can make 100% of the decisions .That is pure arrogant.Good Luck with what ever happens we are all the same family of Canadians and we all want is best for all parts of our great Country.

THIS VOTE WEBSITE IS A SHAM!!! I just voted 10 times. And friend of mine voted once and he claimed that the noted voting numbers and % went down. This is a rigged website

  • Lorna LeBlanc - 7 years ago

I was allowed to vote twice. I think this poll is fraudulent and the numbers incorrect.

  • Tom Wolsey - 7 years ago

600 million spent now is a long way from the billions that will be saved over the next 100 years I keep wondering how our grandchildren are going to pay these massive debts

  • Brian Fisher - 7 years ago

$600 million is about the cost of of one years interest on $9 billion dollars so what we lose on the sweep we make up on the swing. Site C was not built 25 years ago because it was shown that the interest on the loan to build it then could be spent on "Power smart" initiatives that would delay the need for the dam. The same can be shown now. Reacquiring the gifted river assets (with their sweetheart contracts) from the IPPs, building solar, wind and tidal will be cheaper, create more , better paying and longer term jobs and provide the provinces electrical needs for years to come. Simplistically, put the brakes on now.

  • Carol Topalian - 7 years ago

Site C is an economic collapse waiting to happen. More importantly, it destroys one of the last, best tracts of arable land for growing crops. The profits were funnelled to the usual suspects, and the massive cost overruns were destined for the BC taxpayer. BC Liberals wasted money and threw families, especially throughout the lower mainland, into economic misery, in the past 16 years, while lining the pockets of a few cronies like Mt Polley's Imperial Mining Co. Their projects, many of them, perpetuate fraud at BC citizens expense. Other projects can and will be put forth that meet the criteria of environment and economy that British Columbians must see.

  • Deborra Adkins - 7 years ago

The money being spent on Site C would be put to better use on less invasive forms of green energy, such as solar or wind. Jobs at any cost is a dinosaur notion. There would be more long term jobs in solar and wind generation, and we would get to keep the Peace River Valley intact. It is one of the best food growing valleys in the province, we need to remember that jobs and income with no food to buy is a fool's game. It's time to stop pandering to Clark's corporate pals, and put the rights and environmental future of British Columbians first.

the BC provincial government officials should take a step back & take a long, hard look at the current situation Manitobans are facing as a result of TWO Manitoba Hydro projects that the vast majority were opposed to in the first place but of which the Manitoba provincial government gave them both a thumbs up to go ahead citing the economic benefits that will serve the province well! Thing is is MANITOBANS would see no benefit from either one of these projects for 35-50 years!!! Both projects are costly FAR more money that was originally stated and of which now Manitobans are going to be forced to compensate for those costs with their electricity rates being increased in amounts that is only going to be causing even more undue hardship & stress to Manitobans who are already struggling to pay their electricity bills at the rates they currently are at!!! The BC provincial government officials have been HIRED by the residents of BC via their votes cast & it is HIGH TIME for Christy CLARKE to understand that she has a responsibility to LISTEN to what the BC citizens are saying with respect to whether or not THEY, being HER EMPLOYERS want to have this particular project go ahead or not! Citizens of BC spoke LOUD & CLEAR that they simply no longer have faith in trust in her and the BC Liberal party given the results of the most recent provincial election and she needs to understand that should she INSIST on pushing this particular project through against the wishes of HER EMPLOYERS, that being the hard working tax paying BC citizens she will end up losing her COVETED position as the BC Premier & one of the now THREE governing partys for good!!!! Just as the Manitoba NDP lost their coveted position & power for good and if the current governing Manitoba Conservatives led by Brian Pallister will soon learn this lesson in very short time as well if he insists on pushing through HIS & HIS partys agenda AGAINST the WILL of THEIR EMPLOYERS, that being the hard working, tax paying citizens of Manitoba!

  • Goahed Ann Puntmii - 7 years ago

Yes halt the destruction and waste of tax payers $$ today. Give the workers the summer off. 10 Billion - 1.7 Billion is. 8.3 billion saved to pay for projects the province needs such as a New Taylor Bridge and affordable housing for seniors and low income populations. #BeatitC

  • John Jacobsen - 7 years ago

It is disgusting that a three member party can dictate policy and stop job generating projects with the help of the No Party.

  • Randal Hadland - 7 years ago

It would cost money to keep 2200 workers working on building a dam that the BCUC might recommend we don't need. I find it interesting that Premier Clark is the only one of the leaders who is suggesting work stop at this point.

  • Sean - 7 years ago

Only the ndp and green party know how to shut down jobs get them out of government these two parties will destroy our provience

  • Valerie Clark - 7 years ago

The Site C dam was a very costly mistake to begin with and was shoved through by the B.C. Liberals to try and show that they could create massive projects. It has been shown to be a dinosaur idea to the tune of 9 billion dollars. They refused to let it be analyzed by the B.C. Utilities commission since they suspected it would be turned down as an economic money pit. There is no way the electricity is needed for at least 40 years and by then there will probably be so many innovations and new alternative less costly suppliers that the costs will never be recouped.. The B.C. Utilities commission was set up by Gordon Campbell to vet all new big Hydro projects to make sure they were in the best interest of the tax payers. Why was this one not allowed to be scrutinized? 9 billion into this project means 9 billion less for affordable housing, solar and wind investments, schools hospitals etc. STOP IT NOW!!!!

  • Sean murphy - 7 years ago

It will cost money for 2200+ workers to go in ei for 3 months or longer at the very least inclided in the lost of lost time project getting behind and not maintaing it.
