Confederate monuments should be moved to museums not wiped from memory or history is doomed to repeat itself.

if they let a small group of people destroy history now , what will they be doing later ? to our history .. historic statues should be preserved

Why do so many want to demonize the Civil War when it FREED THE SLAVES? Thousands of White men died to free them but not one person who brings up the Civil War mentions that or the freedom issue.
The Civil War war issue was over States rights. Anyone who honestly delves into a history book knows this. Black men AND white men fought side by side. And NOTHING that happened 250 years ago happened to anyone today. No one deserves reparations for something that happened 250 years ago. It greys old when anyone used history as a present day gimme card. Make your life what it is based on your own hard work, merit and good soul. Period.

My dream is that fools would stop trying to rewrite history. LEAVE IT ALONE!!!

  • Susan Davis Hinton - 7 years ago

The civil war was not about slavery. It was about states rights. In the history book pictures you will see black and white men fighting together. Please stop being narrow minded and ignorant. Only idiots and stupid followers want to erase history and for the WRONG reasons. Leave it alone. Oh and btw it wasn't a white person that sold slaves. The mere word slave is horrible. Remember or research what the war was truly about.

I left you a lengthy comment explaining why the politically-correct Sanitation Squad wants to erase everything Confederate and most things Southern also, but you apparently refused to print it even though it doesn't contain any profanity or any other valid reason not to print it; maybe it makes too much sense if this website is too slanted in favor of a politically correct, progressive, liberal agenda.

History is history. Monuments represent both positive and negative attributes of human nature, the human experience and the American experiment in liberty. They should spur remembrance and discussion of the evils of slavery, the struggles of those raised in that time, the sacrifices made on both sides in a terrible war and the long journey of healing and reconciliation that continues to this day.

IMO! This has been blown completely out of portion, by the democrats, blm, haley, Dylan Roof, hand has been fueled by obama and hilary. The start of it all was haley taking down the Flags in S.C. after the shootings. Everyone behind all the misconception of what the Civil War, Confederate Flag, Monuments and the Statues, and Confederate names on buildings and roads, and that it was over slavery; have done nothing but proved what Dylan Roofe wanted and that was to start a race war, so not only did he kill innocent people, but started a race war. Why was everyone so will to jump on the Dylan Roofe bandwagon and support what he did? There are all kinds of reasons that these Flags, Monuments and Statues are so important and can't be erased. Taking away from the people is stealing their ancestry and their history. I support and respect all pertaining to the Civil War, as it is part of my ancestry and those men and woman who sacrificed so much for our freedoms; no matter what the race was they stood together for what they believed in and sacrificed everything for their families, home, and most importantly our freedoms. The war was over greed and money. One side had all of the crops and labors, while the other side had the manufacturing side. When the side with the crops wanted to pull away from the other states; the manufacturing side became greedy, knowing that without the crops side they would collapse and they couldn't let them do that. Thus, the manufacturing started the Civil War over money and greed. So not to make themselves look bad to everyone for starting the war over manufacturing and greed, they changed it slavery, to cover their butts. The actual slaves were brought to America from Africa by an Africian- American slave owner. He ran the slave trade by capturing the slaves and bring them to America to auction them off. These Civil War Monuments, Statues, Confederate Flag, and names of streets and buildings are tributes to those who fought and died to keep our freedoms, homes, and families safe. The were God loving people who fought as one no matter what race or nationalities, all for the same goals. They were are all US Veterans and more died during the Civil war than in any other. The Confederate Flag is a Beautiful Flag of the Civil War, as is the Statues and Monument's erected and donated and paid for by the people who knew the signifignace of their sacrifices. The laws over this was put into effect to keep them as is and penalities for disturbing or removing them. History is history and can't be changed, just as the history and the traditions of the Native American Indians are. We have to deal with what happened during the times past and learn from them; but also pass on to the generations to come all of our history, whether it is good or bad, it is what it is. I am a proud ancestor of those who fought in the Civil War and whatever else that is my ancestor history and I am not going to disown my ancestors to please a few who want to hide from theirs. There are always a few put there, who enjoy want to stir and fuel the fires of hatred and bigatory, they are the bullies. You can't have the MLK Statues, Booker T. Washington And all the others without the Civil War, as this is all connected and go hand in hand. You can't put one history, ancestory, monuments, flags, and statues over the other; because when you do that then you are RACIST. Also, it's all lives mattered, not just one group who thinks they are more or better than anyone else. All in all the Civil War and all the memories for those of us who cherish our ancestors and everything from the Confederate Flag to the Monuments and Statues; wasn't a problem for anybody until Dylan Roofe and haley and I refuse to give in to their RACISM, to let them win or stop my proud history. Please leave these alone and move on to more dire needs of this countries problems. I see isis with each and every one of these communist actions and disresp

Micheal Thomas you sir are ignorant and an idiot. Go read up on history and come back with Facts. Stop being a puppet and come up with your own opinion.

  • Laura Wilson - 7 years ago

    @more history;
It's a land that was big enough for many peoples . Problem was no one told the Indians that. Both sides misunderstood one another which led to war. The white man was not the ONLY aggressor and diabolical killer here. Indians did more than their share and in the name of LAND.
No one people has singular claim to any tract of land. The white man wanted a new land for religious/political freedom from England For ALL colors of people to live on. America is a melting pot for LEGITIMATE citizens.
    Remember that.

  • Laura Wilson - 7 years ago

Statues and the like are NOT a "celebration" of anything. How ridiculous. It is a MEMORIAL. From the word MEMORY. To remember the sacrifices made to FREE SLAVES and the lives given on both sides of the issue right or wrong. If you want to expunge your freedom, I guess you can be ignorant enough to do that. But then, you are making it possible for history to repeat itself. Already there are more slaves today in countries and cities. Look at your clothing. Does it say China or Bangladesh? You can bet it was made by modern day slaves. Google it. Inform yourself. And you are forgetting that African tribes used slaves long before the white man began taking Africans as slaves for the South.
I'm weary of people becoming "Offended" by this or that. Put your adult britches on and deal with it. That's what being an adult is about.

Monuments and memorials do not offend me. Our history is just that, history. We would not be the nation we are today with out all the trials and tribulations we have faced. Since we cant erase the past why not learn from it. Let those monuments and memorials remind us of how far we have come, and how far we have yet to go.

  • Suzanne Leonard - 7 years ago

No matter how many monuments and memorials you remove, you cannot erase history, I don't care how big the eraser is. Many Blacks fought and died for the Confederacy, read the book Black Confederates in Gray. Mr. Lincoln was an absolute racist. Most people have never really read the full transcript of the Lincoln/Douglas debates, in which he says he wants to free the slaves only in the states of rebellion. Yet there is a huge monument to him, money has his picture stamped on it and he is honored. Grant had slaves all during the war, and even when he was elected President. However JEB Stuart had blacks at his home in Virginia, that were paid. They were not slaves, and during the war he sent money back to his wife to buy books and other items to educate the young blacks that worked on his farm, which was an offense punishable by a prison sentence. Do your research, learn the true history. And remember one of the largest slave traders in the South was a Black man that lived in Fayetteville. He ran the slave auction block.

  • David Owens - 7 years ago

These monuments and memorials are for the brave men of all colors that stood and fought against a greedy overbearing government. Those Southerners that fought were not slave owners, they were farmers that worked their own land with their families. They were not fighting for the right to keep or own something they never had. Nobody looks at the economic side of the war.. All anyone can see is the 1.4% of the South that owned slaves and those slave owners were not there ones fighting and dieing... Honor the men that fought to make a better life for their family's.

  • JR Clark - 7 years ago

If we were a well educated country who examined historical events from all sides I might be inclined to have a different view, however in the country the squeaky wheel gets the oil and small groups of alarmist are getting all the attention. I imagine if asked a lot of people don't even notice the historical references around them or why they are there. Rewriting history to suit current generational needs means we are more likely to repeat the mistakes of the past.

  • Sam - 7 years ago

People need to learn the true history and get over all this crap especially going on with the flag it has nothing to do with slavery

  • Jeff N - 7 years ago

The monuments do not offend me in any way, what does offend me is the idiots, assholes, snowflakes and liberals who are trying to get them removed, and erase history!
They are going to keep on, and Civil war II will start, and it won't be pretty for the snowflakes and libtard pansies!!!

  • Cindy Brown - 7 years ago

You can not erase History. And when people are so hell bent on trying to erase and deny the History of this country and the world, they are bound to repeat it. We need to leave these monuments alone and teach our children and grandchildren all about the history and heritage of this great country and the rest of the world so that they grow and learn from the mistakes of the past.

The only people that are "offended" by History and Heritage are those that have never sought out True HISTORY!! The Revisionists of the last 50 - 70 years did their jobs all too well and the Illiterate Masses they have turned out are morphing into a new breed, that being the American Taliban!!

  • Jack Spencer - 7 years ago

It is not a question of if you agreed with the civil war or what side you or your family supported. Rather it is a question of if we have a civilized country and culture or not. Do we wish to join such barbarians as Stalin, Hitler, the Ayatollah Khomeini, Saddam Hussein and ISIS? All of these monsters destroyed historical artifacts and monuments. What kind of people do we choose to be?

  • matthew "i have a dream" goodwin - 7 years ago

I have a dream that whites will stop pursuing debaseness, delinquency, foreign values, immorality, injustice, tardiness, laziness, and a plethora of ideals they have adopted since 1865 and forward.

That they will look to good culture, stop removing good culture, and defend posterity, that they will stop caring what others cultures, and dare I say colors, think of their excellence.

And if you think excellence means supremacy you are stupid, thank you.

  • Shannon Potts - 7 years ago

They should leave our history alone!!! Our southern heritage and history have a right to exist as much as anything else. If we are to tolerate MLK everything and all the rest of them having things named after them our history should be left alone as well for future generations. Fair is fair! There is also another history that should be discussed as well-being that of the Native American Indian's that is always shunned and ignored.

  • Randy Tadder - 7 years ago

Confederate monuments or memorials should not offend any American. Confederate soldiers, sailors, and Marines that fought in the Civil war were made U.S. Veterans by an act of Congress in in 1957, U.S. Public Law 85-425, Sec 410, and Approved 23 May, 1958. This made all Confederate Army/ Navy/ Marine Veterans equal to U.S. Veterans. Additionally, under U.S. Public Law 810, Approved by the 17th Congress on 26 Feb 1929 the War Department was directed to erect headstones and recognize Confederate grave sites as U.S. War dead grave sites. If someone where to remove a Confederate statue, monument or headstone, you are in fact, removing a statue, monument or head stone of a U.S. Veteran. Only a traitor to this country would be offended by Confederate memorials or monuments.

  • Arlan McSotighan - 7 years ago

These monuments and statues are excellent works of art, paid for by private citizens over a hundred years ago to honor true heroes. By US law, Confederate veterans are US Veterans and are to be respected and honored just as all US Veterans; to disrespect these monuments is to disrespect all US Veterans. Those who mistakenly think they are somehow "offensive" are both ignorant and intolerant, they need an education about the true history of the South. Can someone please let me know where the native american monuments are, besides the trail of tears. I am not offended by the confederate monuments. I am offended by the fact that most people are proud to call the USA their land, because in all reality the native americans were killed and tortured for this land. If you are proud of that then i guess you wouldn't mind someone stealing your property and hurting you for it. I am against the Confederate flag because ignorant people have adopted its use to display racism against the african american community.

  • Sassy Chick - 7 years ago

This is our history whether you like it or not. None of us like Hitler either, but unfortunately he is also part of our history. I am just so sick of the racism. Trying to change history is just ignorant!!!

  • Miss Annie - 7 years ago

Heck No, that's all part of our heritage. If it offends you, then you need to leave America. You have the right to pursue happiness, and since you won't find that here, go! Just leave while the borders are still open. GO and pursue happiness!

  • Candice Pelfrey - 7 years ago

Some people seem to think they can take control of what a FREE person can see and honor. History cannot be removed from the past. Good and bad come out of the past. All of us need to remember the past but move on into the future. We need to be glad we don't live back then.

  • Random Dude - 7 years ago

"Honestly keep supporting these monuments and show your support in public so we can see the racist you are ."

Mike.. first and foremost, I think most people agree with the message that Kaepernick was originally fighting for, that minorities shouldn't be profiled and killed by police (even if most were justifiable) The problem with Kaepernick was his sudden support for BLM, sudden support for Malcolm X, sudden degradation of the police (f the police shirts, pigs wearing badges on his socks, ect, ect) then he starts dating a muslim, becomes a vegan, and so on and so on. People weren't happy about his taking a knee during the anthem, but people eventually would have gotten over that if he didn't keep getting himself in deeper and deeper. Kaep is done at this point.

That said, being proud of your heritage doesn't make you a racist, even if your heritage had some less than prideful events transpire during it. I'm sure you're extremely proud of your African roots, despite the fact that Africans enslaved Europeans during the Barbary Slave Trade for over 500 years in Northern Africa. That in and of itself doesn't make you a racist.

That said, even if you think someone is racist for being southern and being proud of being southern, what the heck does "Honestly keep supporting these monuments and show your support in public so we can see the racist you are." mean? Most people really couldn't care less what a random stranger thinks of them, and if someone is racist, I would assume that they would especially not care what someone they hate has to say about them.

  • Lois Rogers - 7 years ago

They are our history, good or bad it is history and should be remembered.

  • Random Dude - 7 years ago

Oh look, the results are pretty much the same as the demographics of the two racial parties involved...

83% white (some hispanics) vs. 16% black (some hispanics)

    What a surprise...

  • John J Griffith - 7 years ago

As a military historian who served his country I fully support memorials to our past.It has been said that without the Civil War we would not be the country that we are.My wife has relatives who fought for the South and My Great Grandfather fought for the Union.I was told that the reason my Father did not know about his Grandfather was because his Father was ashamed of his Dad for serving the Union Army..We have come a long way since then.I hope nobody is ashamed of me for serving in Desert Storm.Remember most those Southern Generals had served in the Union Army before the war.Slavery of all kinds are wrong but how about States rights.Like General Longstreet commented :we should have freed the slaves then fire on Fort Sumter. Our history should not be forgotten. Our history be it good or bad is still our heritage.I served for my country and my State.

  • James Statzer - 7 years ago

No the civil was over 150 years ago. Time to move on.

  • Betty Jerom - 7 years ago

The civil war, and the confederacy, are a part of our history. Even if it's a part you don't like, or don't agree with, you can't change it by denying it's existence. That's like the people who say the holocaust never happened.

  • John Devault - 7 years ago

Removal of monuments will not change history of our nation. Our nation needs to embrace long history and learn how to improve our future. The monuments are not a celebration but a reminder of US History does this mean we need to remove all monuments of positive situations that came out of the civil war era?
So those organizations who don't believe in war we need to remove all war related monuments? Its sad to think we as a nation has come down to" if I don't like it have it removed".

  • Bill Ledford - 7 years ago

I voted" no" only because there was not a" hell no " available.

  • Garrett Bruno - 7 years ago

You can't change history and the amazing thing that no one realizes is that the main issue that the civil war was fought over was sovereignty, not slavery. Trying to say that these monuments somehow keep the race war in America alive is ridiculous. The real race war is kept alive by people constantly trying to act like they are still held back by race. The opportunities for African Americans and Latinos in this country are immense but for some reason they want to keep acting like they are owed something even though they weren't even a part of slavery or even the civil rights era.

  • Tim Parshall - 7 years ago

These monuments do represent the past. But, why do we celebrate it? I've always thought that monuments were placed to celebrate something. I can recognize the individual achievements of some, but, those achievements were made in the name of money and pride. We shouldn't immortalize those that were courageous in the commission of something we now recognize as wrong. Take the monuments down, or, put truthful placards on them, that describe why these men, battles, etc, are being immortalized. History is a good thing, and we should study it..but, those things that we've found to be wrong, shouldn't be celebrated.

  • Michael Thomas - 7 years ago

The hatred that those monuments represents is unprecedented . The Caucasian community will so don’t take them down but ban someone like Colin Kaepernick from speaking his mind on the injustice of our people . Honestly keep supporting these monuments and show your support in public so we can see the racist you are .You are all will keyboard support all day long but not do it in public , just cowards !!!

  • Rita Ayers - 7 years ago

These monuments represent this country's history. Whether it be good or bad. They need to stay in place. It is utterly ridicules to take them down. And the cost to remove them could be well spent somewhere else. Move on people and quit living in the past!!!
