I would appear that USA Today is wrong yet again. Not surprising. Pathetic paper.

Nothing wrong with participation trophies. The same adults that say they make kids feel entitled probably were given participation trophies when they were young. I played on sports teams in my life that weren't very good, but from the first game to the last game we got better. We didn't "WIN" a championship, but we improved. To me the participation trophy was a token of the memories and friendships made. I also played on teams that won championships. It is about competing, learning from mistakes, sportsmanship, comradery. Just because your not great at a sport, doesn't mean that your participation in it has no value in life skills. To me success isn't how many competitions you win. Success is finding your niche, using life skills you learned from participating, competing, and trying to get better at whatever it is you are doing. Not everyone is going to be a Superstar, and that's ok. I want my kids to be successful, compassionate people that follow their dreams. This cutthroat mentality that If you don't finish first at everything you do, you are a failure is dis-heartening. That is a lot of pressure to put on a child. Let them be kids. Let them try things they may not be very good at. I have many participation trophies from my child hood, I also have MVP trophies, a Gradeschool State Championship Basketball Trophy, Bowling league championship trophies, A Varsity Baseball District runner-up trophy. I'm not a professional athlete. I'm not a CEO of a company, I'm not a High Profile Attorney. I have worked in a factory for over 20 years, I have a beautiful family. To me, the Chamionship trophies don't define who I am, or how successful I am. I am as proud of the PT's. My kids love looking at all of my trophies. in the end, as long as my kids put effort into what they are doing, learning to win and lose with dignity, and enjoying their childhood, that is all i ask of them. They will be fine adults.

I see where Kobe is coming from. It's a great way of teaching his children about being a competitor. However, some kids see it like that. After their sporting days are over they will continue to see this world through the eyes of entitlement.

While it's true that only one person can win a competition can't happen if only one person shows up. I have no problem with competition organizers giving participation awards as a way of saying thank you to all who showed up. Without them there wouldn"t have been a competition.
