Do you support a skills-based immigration system

YES! This was what was required of my paternal great-grandparents, and grandparents, when they immigrated to the U.S. through Ellis Island 100 or so years ago! And my maternal lineage goes back to the 1600's and 1700's, and if they didn't come equipped with many skills, they would not have survived this harsh wilderness we were before the industrial revolution!

I voted uncertain because it depends on the numbers that will be admitted. It's not just the educated breadwinner. We need to know the number of wives, husbands, children that come as part of a family who will use our schools, roads, all the infrastructure and social services. At some point down the road, we should need much less immigration, skilled or not, because of all those admitted (including those who came illegally) who will have children who will eventually be in our work force. There will be an overlap of those original immigrants who will still be in the workforce along with the generations who come after them.

Future numbers must be considered as there are potentially 3 generations in the workforce at any given time and especially since there is talk of raising Social Security retirement age to 70. Will there be enough jobs? Many of today's young workers are already saying that 'old people need to either die or get out of the workforce' to make room for them.

When will people realize we have millions of stem grads each year that are working Starbucks and at shoe stores. We already have the skills here. We don't need to do anything to enhance and extend immigration on skills! This will screw over Americans and jobs!

I believe they should have skills, but also think the sponsor program should be used also. I remember when churches used to sponsor them and make sure they have jobs and are assimilating to our way of life...we don't owe them anything, they owe us the respect of wanting to be America and respect for us as a people, and respect for flag for which so many have fought and died to protect. They should be honored to come to our country , otherwise they don't need to be here, disrespecting us and talking about killing us! I think you also have to be careful with the Muslim doctors, as already some have been performing genital mutilation on their young girls.

Are you saying that Muslims that are lawyers, doctors, pilots don't want us dead or under their feet? I say keep them all out as they don't share American values.

We already have too many in the tech industry taking our jobs, putting American born out of work. Federal government is already giving tax breaks to businesses who hire foreign students graduating from our colleges. We need people from all walks of life who will do physical labor. Too many generations of American citizens live off the government or are drug addicts that do not work. Build a house and you will find how much we need good skilled labor, ones who take pride in their work.

We currently must get the ones her legally to assimilate or go back to their country because they truly don't want to be America and get rid of all the illegal.

I also want a reinstatement of the sponsor system, where a relative or employer agrees to assure that the person coming to the U.S. will not be receiving welfare, etc. The sponsor takes responsibility for funding the person. That's how it was in the past. Why not now?

Absolutely...other countries REQUIRE Skills as necessary for approval. How can the immigrant CONTRIBUTE instead of how it is now... what they can TAKE !

We need to focus on America first. Once we get our act together then we can talk about accepting immigrants, skilled. Until then, close the boarder and only allow short passes to family of immigrants here. Already.

Granted it advances a guide for the immigration allowances but, in the same breath
We also need to primarily focus on
Skills Issues with IN OUR COUNTRY
TOO MANY people who are not working due to lack of trade skills
We Need to Get "US" BACK TO WORK
REDUCE IF NOT ELIMINATE THE CRUTCH OF WELFARE HAND OUTS

Only down side I see is the drain of those country's brain. The alternative; promote their remaining in their own countries to fix problems there; decrease immigration numbers and, specifically chain immigration, using those funds toward our own education system. Overhaul tech jobs programs. Keep the dough here and super educate our own!
