Will investing in light rail and improving bus service fix Nashville's traffic problems?

Berry wants to piss away enough money to turn Nashville into another Detoilet. The traffic in Nashville isn't from people driving around downtown. It's from people commuting in from the surrounding counties. The 5.2 BILLION dollars won't do a single thing for a driver coming from Smyrna to work downtown, it won't help a commuter coming in from Lebanon, it won't help a driver coming in from Clarksville and it won't help a driver coming in from Bellevue. The tax hikes will help kill tourism with the rental car tax and it'll really hurt poorer people that live in Davidson county.

    Stupid is as stupid does!

I lived in. Nashville almost 60 yrs. Left a few yrs ago because of traffic among other things. The change really started about the time pro football arrived. Nashville wanted to be a big league City and you'll have to cope with the traffic woes that come with it. . Yes subways, designated bus lanes, light rail, ect would help but Lord help those who.aren't wealthy or indigent. The tax increases will kill the rest!

    Shadey,
Initially, if I hadnt had a similar experience, I would have said you need to seek a life coach, need help or a psychologist. However, in the 90's, I ran around with this gang called liberals (I liked to call them lefties), the whole gang would have meetings about how to pretend to get minority's on their side, pretend to really care about equality, and make it seem they would make this country better. They also talked in their secret meetings about getting rich from the rich, taking over the media outlets and really screwing people over to get votes by making little improvements but really get their party to become successful. When I say, I believe you, well, you should believe me because you seem to believe people really easy.
Additionally, thanks for the reference on Atlanta and we should look more into what makes other cities more successful. Cheers mate!

What I'm about to tell you is a true story:
Back in the 90s, I talked to a civil engineer who helped design the infrastructure of Nashville. He explained to me, that they did not want Nashville to grow to be a big city, so they intentionally designed the highway system to not be efficient and grow. This was because the city was ran by conservatives that were afraid Nashville would become a City overrun with gambling addicts, whores, and lots of brown people. This is why it took so long for us to get a lottery and a football team. The city is going to continue to grow exponentially. The only solution, UB solution that Atlanta took, which is to have an underground rail system that expands to multiple counties. There also needs to be more private shuttle buses like other cities have that fairy people to and fro different parts of the city.

I wonder why the local leaders made their final decisions on this current plan. It seems a lot of people don't agree with the current plan. They should have to explain. It seems like they need two or more projects at one time. Focus on combing efforts at the same time: inner city transportation, outer border city transportation while connecting outside counties to the city. I think this should be possible. I think they can work on relieving stress on the major interstates leading to and from the city while working on creating mass trans in the city. The could lay out a short term and long term plan that shows us how they will eventually connect it all. They can ask for budgeting as they complete sections.

I agree most people won't give up driving their cars. We all know there are a lot of bad that comes from driving cars, like injuries, death, wasted time, loss of money, horrible for the environment, and more.
What can we do? Should we have a electronic scan toll that's based on income for people for drivers? Should we tax more for gas? Should tax the car companies more? Should we design into walking communities? Should we have more underground mass transportation systems? What should we suggest to our leaders?

No it will not help as many of us that commute to Brentwood or Franklin. This will not help all of us that travel from outer lying counties

Why can't we have a rail system in the middle or along of highway from like Interstate 24 from let's say Kentucky that runs all the way through and past Nashville to Georgia. You could have parking lots or bus routes at each interstate exit for people to jump on the rail system. From what I understand is that I24 is getting worse and is horrible. Why are the local leaders not addressing this option? Where is the media to ask our local leaders?

  • Ken Y. - 7 years ago

Most folks are not going to give up their cars!

Not unless these buses and rail systems extend from counties outside of Davidson. Many commute to Nashville but live outside of metro, so this does nothing for us.

  • need Experts on the matter to explain - 7 years ago

Look, I'm just a simple Joe that works, watches the news, does things with and for my family and friends. I'm just trying to make it in this world and I'm always trying to find time to listen and find out what our leaders are doing? But I don't hear a lot. I just hear a short explanation of some things and I'm often feeling really confused and not sure. It's like they kind of want to leave us in the dark. It's like they don't want the experts to explain to us.
Have you ever watched or listened to the show, Adam Ruins Everything? It seems to me like it's too late without huge changes and we already let the car industry take over the shaping of our communities. I support making walking communities, I support the best technology in public transportation and trying to make changes for the better. I just don't know if I'm supporting something for the better because I'm no expert and I don't hear from them. I'm not sure if those local leaders are just doing what is best for the rich or making temporary solutions that don't really make a difference. I'm not sure because there is not good communication between community leaders, media and with the people. What do I know, I'm a citizen busy with other stuff in my day? How do we know the community leaders are making the best decisions? After getting elected, a lot of leaders slow down and don't do things for the best of the people. I believe research shows that. Are they explaining to us with using research, experts, examples in other areas? All we hear from community leaders is what they are doing and we don't get a lot messages from leaders on all the areas or options.
We need the media and community leaders to have experts in the appropriate fields explaining to us on the Pro's and Con's. It seems like community leaders do as little as possible to get their message across on why they are doing things. It seems like the experts in their decisions are never working with us in explaining.
How many people get emails, texts or things in the mail from local leaders? Do they try to really, like when they are running for office, to explain to people or let them in on public decisions they are making? It seems backwards! You would think they would spend more time running around, using the media, using technology to get people involved in their decision making process or informing us why we should be part of their plans. I don't hear what options we have for changing the transportation in my community. I don't hear why this way instead of another way. I don't hear the local leaders or experts explaining to us and bringing us into the process that affects our futures. Maybe they could do things faster, more effectively, or maybe we have research showing this is the best way. I'm not sure! I haven't been given a chance to hear all the details. I don't hear if there are experts that can prove if this is good or bad. I want more information in the media and I would like local leaders to email me with explanations from experts, using research and examples and more. Local leaders seem to just go off their gut or something. It seems they try to deceive us on the truth or all the details. I'm just confused on the poll because of lack of knowledge from experts. I hate hearing people's opinions when they have no knowledge on a subject. I mean, yes it sounds good. Somewhat more public transportation. Seems like a good idea but we need research, experts and leaders explaining to us and informing us on facts, you want a good poll or vote.

Sure! And investing in teleportation, jetpacks for everyone, flying cars, and Jetson machines is crucial. Let's spend 100 billion, Mayor Dingleberry!

She and David Briley are liberal tax-n-spend addicts. Bredeson would never have gone for such nonsense.
