Daily Poll: Do you support a ban on firecrackers

Most people could live with just about any kind of noise if they knew that it was just for one day. This year, and since we moved into our apartment in 2013, the noise started as early as September 24 and went as long as December 4 (it's been documented if you wish to call the VPD). Last night it started at 6:30 pm in the park at the end of our street (NOT ALLOWED) and continued from various locations until at least 3:30 when I finally fell asleep, then started again at 6:45 am. Do I want a ban?...you better believe it. A handful of people who have no respect for the bylaws or anyone in the city ruin it for everyone who conducts themselves responsibly. And please, this "no fun city" label is just ridiculous. How much fun is it for the thousands of people who are disturbed day and night for weeks by these unbelievably loud noises? That's what I call "no fun". What about dogs who can't even be let outside for their nightly walk? Most of these noises aren't even from display fireworks; they are just a series of LOUD bangs from ILLEGAL AND BANNED FIREWORKS. Come on City of Vancouver, get with the rest of the country and almost every major city in the world and BAN THESE THINGS OUTRIGHT. And a challenge to anyone who wants to slam all over my post: Come and spend a night at our place and see how you feel about it as you try to function in the morning after about three hours of sleep.

The VPD and VFD both want them banned, but they defer to the City of Vancouver in that regard. As much as they see, the injuries, fires, and the time they waste responding to nuisance calls by people with no regard to the law or safety, it is the City of Vancouver that has to ban them.

The comment about sports injuries above is comparing apples to oranges. Sports are played all year, and the injuries affect the athlete only, so not sure what you're trying to say Bob.

If you want them banned, please contact our Mayor and Council at the City of Vancouver.

After a terrible sleep last night, including being awoken at 4 am by fireworks, the cold my son and I had were much worse. We live backing onto a park and the noise never stops. I had to take a sick day. How much do fireworks cost the city in loss of productivity?

it's only one night of the year and very entertaining if done responsibly.I can't say I'm surprised by the negative comments towards it.after all we are in Vancouver...

Fireworks on Halloween is a BC thing. I never understood the reason for it. As a dog owner, having to comfort my dog while he shakes and whines for the nights before and during Halloween when people light off fireworks, a ban can't come soon enough. Have the cities or municipalities put on a show for people to attend.

I can count on both hands how many friends, or friends of friends i have known who "thought" they knew how to properly use fireworks, only to have to cut off a finger, or have their hand or face burned.. so definitely not as safe as people make it out to be. And it isn't only "one night." When those firework places begin selling them at the beginning of October until about the first week on November, it is quite common to hear them everyday...especially if you live near a park.. so it is a nuisance.

There have been very few injuries. Very safe if used responsibly. There are more injuries caused by sports than fireworks.

Harmless?? Tell that to the emergency ward doctors and nurses who have to deal with the blown off fingers and/or the firework burns! Or, the firefighters having to put out fires caused by fireworks!

Fireworks setup by the community is fine......hopefully controlled with a permit. Individuals home fireworks can be potentially dangerous with no control and show off personalities in charge.
