Should Puerto Rico become a state?

Just as Hawaii had its own culture and identity which it has not completely lost. Puerto Rico too can become a state and not lose it's culture. Anyone opposed to statehood is ignorant.

Puerto Rico should not be a state of the Union, not just because it is bankrupt and was ravaged by a hurricane, but because its residents have repudiated Statehood on five referenda since 1967.

Four years ago, 1,878,969 people participated in a skewed referendum designed to give Statehood an advantage. Nonetheless, only 834,191 chose Statehood, or 44% of the electorate. Four years later in 2012, the pro-Statehood party designed and held another skewed referendum designed to give themselves an advantage. On that occasion, nauseated by yet another Mickey Mouse process, only 525,138 participated (80% boycotted). Only 508,862 chose Statehood, which means the pro-Statehood movement lost 325,000 votes compared to 2012.

If Statehood for Puerto Rico were so Star Spangled Awesome, people would vote for it.

It's the chronic STATUS problem of 2nd CLASS citizenship that should be prioritized in being resolved. Theoretically, being an independent country would be one way. But, realistically, and proven thru economic and political experience, STATEHOOD is the BETTER alternative. Would the Puerto Rican culture be adversely affected, is one question. Perhaps looking at the experience of states like those of the U.S. southwest on Mexican frontier, or Hawaii, or Alaska, could prove instructive and dispositive.
I resided on Borinquen for 12 years and have many ties to it. We have 2 children who were born there. This is my gut feeling of what's best for PR's future. The answer's not cut and dry. All important aspects need to be factored in, then the answer made upon how everything balances out.
P.S.: Replying to previous comments -- 1. The 1st invasion of Puerto Rico was 500 years ago by the Spanish, who colonized and subjugated the indigenous, Taino indian; (the indians had arrived from Venezuela around 1200 A.D.)
    2. Re California, the slight majority of all families there today, do NOT speak English as primary language at home. In my home town in NE Illinois, 52% of inhabitants are Mexican.
    3. Interesting ($) monetary fact -- a great abundance of Mexicans have immigrated to lower 48 states; whereas, the Mexican population in Puerto Rico is negligible, practically non-existent. Driving this move is not whether primary, official language is English or Spanish, but rather, where there exists opportunity to obtain good jobs and economic progress. Eso es asi !!!!

NO puerto rico should not be apart of the US. because if puerto rico (my country) starts being part of the US then that would mean that our culture would then have to combine with American culture. and thats not good our spanish would then become minor and english will become more important than our own language. our culture will be going down do to american rules because if a country becomes part of the US they are obligated to learn english and spanish will become a second language. that is not what we want. and if the US can come up with an agreement with our government to keep our language as primary and for the american culture not to interfere with ours then ill probably say yes because of the benefits but the disadvantages, heck no!!!!!!!

there is no worst blindness than he who refuses to see.... 120 year of colonialism would tell any idiot that neither "equality" nor "assimilation" will ever materialize... just as with slavery, sovereignity will need an armed conflict to disappear... the submissive cannot have neither; assimilation nor sovereignity.

Puerto Rico is a nation with its own identity. United States invaded a country in 1898 that already had an autonomy given by Spain, making this invasion an illegal one. Puerto Rico needs to be free from the United States. United States needs to help a country that didn't ask for an invasion and intervention. This country, U.S., should not forget that long ago they wanted to be free from an imperial power like England. Independence for Puerto Rico now, is the right thing to do!
