The application of the speculation tax to small un-serviced islands in the Nanaimo area is totally inappropriate relative to islands like Mudge and DeCourcy. These island have virtually no services and limited access by small private boats only. The number of permanent residents are minimal and in the case of DeCourcy and Ruxton the next island south, rentals are not allowed to reduce the potential impact of fire on the islands during the summer. These islands are for the most part strictly seasonal cottages and need a rest during the winter to recover. Our water comes in the form of captured rain water, our power from either generators, propane or solar and our primary source of motive power is our willingness to hand haul everything over ourselves. These are not speculative properties and they are not for the faint of heart.

How many untruths were printed in these comments, like nothing for Senior and yes their was senior in carehomes and something for rent and more money! The one that really gets me is the radical rights statement that you had better leave business alone because they will pass the tax to us the consumers? What that tells me they pay piss all and bitch the're having a hard time, very hypocritical of business people with fear mongering!

Tax me I’m Canadian. What kind of a finance minister wants house prices to drop. It affects us all. All these social programs brought to you by the middle class!

So icbc rates were frozen by the liberals which is to blame for the mess it's in. But now they are freezing bc ferry rates to hide its financial problems. I hate politics

I make 100k a year and cant afford to live in lower mainland. Cant wait for all my hard work to pay off so I get the pay bump into 150k a year so the NDP can take all my gains with increased taxes ($4000/year increase) . Since your basically a billionare if you make that much. Just when feel like you can get your head above water, they smack you down to help homeless drug addicts and people who had children who can't afford it.

Only hope now is if we go into recession, massive deficits, housing market correcting with higher interest rates. With no foreigners allowed to come to the rescue after the correction this time. The bond market is already crashing, government debt is worthless at 2%. Lets flip this board game upside down people!!

Nothing for the most vulnerable people...the seniors

  • Michael S - 6 years ago

Yeah, that 25 dollars per month per employee is going to kill businesses. They will all leave BC.

I think some commenters take their pop business economics knowledge a little too far. They've never learned about elasticity or tax incidence either it seems.

Taxing small business with a payroll of $500,000 to pay for MSP premiums is a bad idea. Small business will be non-existent in BC soon! Business can't pay for all the taxes, especially when this government is so intent on shutting down any business in the province! We sure are telling Foreigners that they are not wanted here nor there money! Maybe we should explore what New Zealand is doing with foreigner property buyers! What businesses will be left after they are done paying for and subsidizing all the NDP tactics: tax, tax & more tax ! This budget is not fixing anything just passing the buck to the next guy! Standup and fix something and quite creating more problems in our Province.
I am so ashamed of my Province, breaking laws and just charging in on the working people while not even helping make a difference to the poverty! Where has all the money gone? and then you have Trudeau that would take a whole book to explain... Shame Shame on our government officials!

I think the budget isint bad but I also think they should stop foreign ownership of our land

  • Gerald - 6 years ago

Don't people realize that when governments put extra costs on property owners and businesses that those costs get passed on to tenants and customers as increases in rents and increases of prices for goods purchased/sold. As for poverty, it will always be there but in order to reduce it's impact on society you have to increase the welfare rates to cover the necessities of living like shelter, food, clothing, hygiene, ect. Also there should be mandatory drug and alcohol withdrawal treatment for drug addicts and alcoholics ( and not requiring their consent to do so). Also, there should be mental health facilities like the old Riverview Hospital (which never should have been shut down to reduce costs) for people that are not mentally capable of looking after themselves

Is everyone awake now ? This government is going to increase revenue by increasing the foreign investment tax , adding a speculation tax and increasing land transfer taxes on homes over 3 million dollars. They plan on cracking down on money laundering and fraud in the local real estate. All this to help cool the local real estate market. If they are successful and the market cools , there will be a huge budget shortfall. They are increasing the carbon tax but now it’s just going into general revenue so really it’s just a tax increase. They are going to start taxing business next year while still collecting MSP premiums basically double dipping. Meet the new boss same as the old boss.

  • Dillian Fraser - 6 years ago

Well, you voted for them. What did you expect from the NDP? All you fine folks who worked hard to get an education, worked hard to get a good job will pay for it all. This is only the beginning.

Lived in. Vancouver my whole life, worked, saved and invested. Built wealth “the right way” and these politicians don’t care about any of us, just want to get re-elected. Vancouver is unaffordable for all but the few...get used to it. Great deals in Calgary, Edmonton, Regina, etc...go where it’s more affordable for you. If this sounds harsh to you, don’t be fooled by anyone saying this city will EVER be affordable. You can’t turn back the clock to pre-Expo 86 days, just as you can’t “unscramble an egg.” Take a few economics courses, then post your educated response. Good luck to all of us, we will need it!

I am disappointed because there is no flipping tax on sale of property. I 've seen same property sold many times in a year. Government should tax this people heavily even it is for principal residence and they are the one stirred up the price so high.

  • Ann Moore - 6 years ago

Happy with childcare and MSP. Nothing for Surrey transit. If you are serious about getting greener in BC you won’t if you don’t get your largest and fastest growing municipality into the loop. See no logic to spending millions on saving languages no one wants to speak anymore. Nothing for seniors of worth. And NDP you will destroy BC real estate market if you keep targeting it and that will end your days in power quicker than anything else you do.

  • Gerald Van De Ven - 6 years ago

It's nice to see the government stand up and help the homeless. But again the programs fall on the back of the middle-class by this I mean there are opportunities for this government to focus on future technologies that will offer jobs. If the government want to make it more difficult for businesses to do business then they should help create opportunities.

Since when does taxing people to death mean standing up to the task. Get real!!

  • Mike - 6 years ago

Trudeau and now this. Canada is so screwed. Everyone who can leave, will. This country will be Venezuela sooner than you think.

Meanwhile the politicians drink champagne and eat lobster. While jet setting around the world attending Global Warming -uh-uh-uh Climate Change conferences, partying with Bono et al.

Doomed. We are doomed. And conservatives and liberals are no better.

  • Joe Wilson - 6 years ago

There is always a lot of unhappy people that think they could do better, yet never run for office and when they do, billions go missing. No, the NDP will not be perfect, but BC is lacking better. So, if you think you can do a better job, prove it! Personally, I thank the NDP for standing up to the task.

  • Mel - 6 years ago

This budget sucks as does the NDP, chasing industry away and double dipping taxes on businesses for msp premiums, what business would stay in this province after a budget like this. Nothing for seniors as usual, nothing for improving health care, zero.

  • Linda Wilson - 6 years ago

No I am not happy with this budget, as usual the NDP is chasing business away, something they have always done. My vote was stolen when they got into government by joining with the green party. Once again they will ruin B.C. Nothing for seniors who already live below poverty level and are the lowest in the western world, shame on the government's of Canada. Nothing to improve the medical system, where we live when we go to a doctor we are only allowed 10 minutes and to ask 1 perhaps 2 questions at the most, I hear it is the same just about everywhere so how about paying the doctors more for better care.

  • Wally - 6 years ago

Taxing small business with a payroll of $500,000 to pay for MSP premiums is a bad idea. This puts a burden on small business. Same old NDP tactics: tax, tax & more tax

  • Nina - 6 years ago

The government should take a page from New Zealand's new law of having to be a permanent resident in order to purchase housing instead of taxing foreigners more.

  • casa stan - 6 years ago

a very racist budget targeting foreigners for your own undoing ...

  • Self Reliant - 6 years ago

Used to be that, when I had no food or a roof, I would blame myself for the situation.
Today the media will have me blame the foreigners more specifically the Chinese, regardless of the other countries immigration rates to B.C.
Well ok then, tax them enough to put food in my belly and a roof over my head.

  • David - 6 years ago

they say they want to reduce poverty in BC and make more low rent housing. but if your on disability or welfare the rates for housing cost has not changed in 10+ years. it still stuck at 375$ per month. the extra 100 $ is nice for food but it doesn't really help much . has the gov even tryed finding a apartment in vancouver or kelowna for 375$ per month that is not a dump
this new budget is ok for a small family that has jobs for if your stuck on the system your screwed and they should have a lest tried to show there fixing the problem and no make new problems
