This still happens with the light rail. Folks are not paying attention. I don't think I could have avoided this accident if I was driving. Very sorry for everyone involved.

This isn't about self-driving cars, it's about idiots jaywalking without paying attention. This lady should get a Darwin Award.

For the people that said they are not safe. Now go jump in front of a car as its moving 40 mph see how fast we humans can stop that car to avoid hitting you.

What I want to know is if you think walking outside of a Crosswalk is safe?

This was a very damaging way to write this pole. There’s an investigation going on. If someone walks in front of a car going 40 mph there are factors that need to be addressed before you pole. How close was the car to the area she impacted it? Physics still mater person or robot. A car traveling X speed needs X distance to come to a full stop. Self driving doesn’t mean the end of car accidents, it means less accidents. There are still situations self driving or human drivers that are inevitable. Let the investigation happen and then pole it.

Right now i dont reallt think they are that safe even if the lady was outside the crosswalk if a real person was behind the wheel rhey woyls have braked driverlwas needa to be more sentive to people and animals because not everyone abides by rules ans if the crosswalj is full of people sometimes you have to go outside of ir and a driverless needs to be just as aware as a person

I have some great questions that may have not been addressed yet. Maybe Jason or someone can look into these.
Sadly this car did not see that lady Sunday.
So do they see pedestrians in the road--crosswalk or not??
Can they see pets in the road or starting to walk or dart out in the road? Or even cows or horses?
What about rain storms like our wicked monsoon? Can they detect with all their cameras and sensors wind rain and snow?? What about icy roads where some people can not even see the ice?

I do not think they are safe especially in changing weather and with small items and people and animals in the road.

Any new technology is going to need refinements. It is extremely sad that this happened and of course more will come out as the investigation continues....

On the roads they seem to be observing the rules of the road. My concern is it didn’t brake for a person in the middle of road I have noticed many pedistrans not walking in crosswalks. They are very hard to see at night, but I hope automated cars would have superior sensors and protocols to stop for unexpected persons.

I'm saddened that Ms Herzberg gave her life. This should in the end improve the safety of self-driving vehicles. Most of these vehicles appear to be safer than most of the human driven accidents and fatalities.

Lady was walking outside of the crosswalk. If she followed the traffic laws then she would still be alive. Self driving vehicles aren’t the issue, people are. People need to act more like machines and follow the rules we are told to follow. If you step in front of a moving car and die, it’s not the car’s fault. The car didn’t do anything wrong.

Does anyone think this could have been avoided by a human driver? My guess is that it would have occured either way.

How many people are killed every day in traffic accidents and no one but the family gives a darn. My heart goes out to the family. Big news for a while. But will not stop self driving cars from happening.

No! They are NOT safe, and this wreck PROVES it! It’s also a “liability” nightmare, for the owner of the car, the manufacturer of the car, the company that HIRES the car (in this case, Uber), AND THE FAMILY OF THE VICTIMS!!!! They SHOULD be OUTLAWED!!! Talk about a “no-brained!”

WHY didn’t the “driver” SITTING BEHIND THE WHEEL TAKE OVER the automation & BREAK?????

HE’s liable for MANSLAUGHTER, at the MINIMUM!!!! This tragedy should NEVER have been ALLOWED to happen!!!!!

  • RB - 6 years ago

Only as safe as the people on the road around them.

  • Vicki B - 6 years ago

They'll find the victim negligent for not crossing in a marked crosswalk...

For all of their processing power and sensor, computers can't reason or make judgement calls. Plus, Uber has deep pockets. How much will the lawsuit be?
