Why is the Washington Monument two different colors?
The Washington Monument Society ran out of money mid-construction in 1854, and the second phase of construction, 25 years later, used marble from a different quarry.
The lower section of marble toward the base, installed in 1884, is thicker and sturdier so it can support the much lighter stone above, which is a slightly different kind of marble.
The whole monument was constructed at once, but the effects of time, wind, rain and erosion have affected the monument differently in different places because the higher elevations are more exposed to the elements.
During construction in 1854, the Washington National Monument Society wanted the monument to be representative of the entire country and ordered marble from multiple states.
