Which of these choices best describes the "mechanics" of how you became a Christian?

I was raised as an atheist and my father taught us that religion was a crutch. I believed him and lived a godless sinful life. However, as an adult, at a point of desperation I cried out to God for help through His Son Jesus Christ. Christ was in the room with me making a covenant with me exchanging His life for my life. From that point on I wanted to read the Bible, pray and go to church. However, right off, I got caught up in false teaching and it was only through prayer to the Father and reliance upon His Word the Bible that I was delivered from false teaching. Shortly after that, the Lord reassured me that He was with me Father, Son and Holy Spirit, one day while in prayer, and that was His call upon me to stand up for His truth, the Bible, and stand against error. He allowed me to stand up against error in a false church (another couple who visited also warned the attenders), and many who were attending were delivered from deceit as He gave me opportunity to share the Scriptures.
God used His Word in my life to convict me of sin and warn me of His holiness and just judgment against sin. He also encouraged me with the gospel reassuring me of salvation and eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ and His finished perfect work on the cross, dying in my stead, taking the punishment I deserve and rising from the dead for my justification and eternal life to the glory of God the Father. In Jesus Christ I am counted as perfect while God continues His work of sanctification in my life. I didn't really get any good biblical teaching regarding these plain biblical doctrines since every church we attended was heretical in one way or another. This led me at times to be very disheartened. However, I believed what the Bible says and was encouraged by Jesus Christ's gracious work of salvation in my life. Many years later, the Lord again reassured me He was with me Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and He again called me to stand up for His Word the Bible and oppose false teaching and false teachers, only now this call set me at odds with most of evangelical Christianity. I was shocked to discover the progress of apostasy within the visible church. I was shocked to discover how many of the so-called heroes of the visible Christian church were actually apostates spreading apostasy. However, God used His Word by His Holy Spirit to keep me from falling away because we are warned countless times throughout the Bible that many are false and deceptive and that God, by His power, has retained for Himself a remnant who are faithful and true to Him. He has made it clear to me that believing and obeying His Word the Bible is the dividing line between those who are genuine believers in Jesus Christ and those who are spurious.
I praise God for His glorious grace and the salvation that He has given me through the wonderful work done by my God and Savior Jesus Christ and I look forward to His return and spending eternity with Him.

The Holy Spirit had been working on me for a while. Go back to church had been playing in my head for months. Then I found out I had Hepatitis C, started the treatment, nearly died from that. The Holy Spirit came to me daily in my thoughts and I prayed. Not the kind of prayer I used to you know the one where if you get me through this I promise to never blah blah blah again. This time I actually meant that I was seeking the Lord, to better know him, to read his word when I could barely understand the words. My treatment was killing me with the poison, but my heart was feeling filled with the love of Jesus. Against the odds I cleared the virus, it has taken a toll on my body that 10 years later I am mobility limited and many other health issues, but none of them life issues. I have come to know that Jesus loves me. God has a wonderful paradise waiting for us if we believe and damnation for those that choose to turn away from Him. I attend bible studies at church, services on a regular basis. this is a far cry from the old me, the party animal, the one that did the most drugs, drank the most drinks, thought and proclaimed the teachings of God did not exist. I now spend my days, using the talents God gave me to study and understand his word. To be of service to Him where he needs me most and the bottom line 'I trust Him to do his will not to answer my prayers the way I might expect or want but to answer with what He knows to be the best." I will live my life out as a Christian, the best I have to offer is living by example I do not yell about the unbelievers to convert to get the faith. The holy Spirit will come to those who seek him in honesty.I believe in the Father, son and holy Spirit,,, All the glory to God.

Knew that Jesus died for my sins and I believed that, got baptized, but didnt repent until later. Didnt hear about repentance until I came across the teaching of Hells Best Kept Secret.

I learned about the forgiveness of sins through the blood of Jesus Christ from someone and then began reading and studying His Word to find out what was necessary to continue to please God and to spread the gospel.

I was dead, helpless in sin on the bottom of the ocean. Christ dove in and saved me from certain death, carrying me to safety in the arms of the Father. Yes, I prayed a prayer... but it was God-ordained that I did. I am saved by Christ completely!

God gave me an overwhelming sense of God's holiness and my sinfulness. I knew I was lost and there was absolutely no hope for me apart from Christ and His finished work on the cross. I repented and believed. I continue to repent and believe that His word is true and that it is my only standard for life. Where else can I go? Jesus, you have the words of life!

He said to me, "Be still and know I AM God." And a great love filled my soul and I could not take it all in and then I knew for sure. I am a child of the Most High and I was so unworthy and yet have great worth and he sent Jesus for me, my sin and my grief became great sorrow and my wrong response to him and my heart became broken and contrite. Maranatha.

Regarding the mechanics of how I became a Christian, it began with me becoming, through reading "The Bible Stories" by Arthur Maxwell, and looking at the illustrations, aware of how much Christ suffered in dying for our sins. Although I was not drawn, during that time period, to worship God, I was struck by my lack of any connection to God. After attempting to find the key to successful living via astrology and cynicism, I went to a Watchnight service On New Year's Eve, 1975. There, I heard a message which, by the act of the Holy Spirit, convicted me "of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment." When the pastor, Rev. Major Lucious, said, "Will you come," I came, confessing my faith in Jesus Christ as my Lord and Saviour.

Afterward, I took an intense interest in understanding theology and the Bible. Eventually, I came upon Romans, and spent some time engaged in its study, coming to realize that it was God's grace which gave me faith to believe in His Son, and be saved thereby. After that, I was immune to ideas of "works-righteousness" on the one hand, and of "antinomiamism" on the other.

In summary, there was a "date" when I confessed Christ and that I was a believer in Him, submitting myself to the fellowship of the saints by joining with a local body, Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church in Gary, IN., but there was also a "process" in which I grew in grace and in the knowledge of God. The two work together, and I am, by confession and profession, a Christian.

(Eph 2:8) For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,
(Eph 2:9) not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

    Bravo, Naomi,
You are so right. We couldn't have done a thing to save ourselves and in many thinking that they have had a hand in it it pure foolishness. Look at the steps we are destined to follow in...who in their right minds would choose that? Amazing grace alright and then some. God didn't save us because of ourselves, but inspite of ourselves.

    PS say hi to Mark!

I too am a new person in Christ,He sought me & bought me,now I'm His &He is mine.I will never go back to the old way of life because it wasn't really living at all it was a slow miserable death & I'm glad to leave it behind.

  • Paul - 13 years ago

I think my answer is different because of the "process" that I went through on my way to salvation. When I mean process, I mean the process or the road I traveled as God brought me to the end of myself. It wasn't anything I did, said or thought that saved me.I didn't even know I was on a road to salvation. It was solely God. He saved me and I had absolutely nothing to do with it at all, for I thought I was saved for 24 years, until He opened my eyes, showed me the weight of my own sin that put Jesus on the cross and then showed me how holy He truly was. He broke me, shattered me and crushed me with my sin and when I cried out and begged for mercy, that's when the "process" was completed. I continue to walk in brokenness to this day and am very aware of my sin and its effects on Christ's suffering on the cross for Calvary didn't stop when he was crucified. The only work that saved me was Christ's. I am a new creature for it.
