What was your major in college?

I studied Clinical Laboratory Science to become a MT in hospital lab. It allowed me to be the science nerd that I am, while still planning to be a mom. Because the shifts are like nursing shifts, I'm able to work an evening or two a week, and still be home with my boys all day. I love that I get to be the mom my family needs me to be, while still doing what I love and contributing to the health and welfare of the patients we serve.

The added bonus is that when my husband has been unemployed in the past, I was able to jump right in as the breadwinner. The field has a shortage and even during the recent recession, jobs were available.

I hugely encourage every woman to study something that she loves, to the extent that she is able. And find a way to use it after college is over. Whether in the work-field or as a mother. It is a powerful way to maintain your identity during those tough early years of child-rearing.
