On an old-fashioned typewriter, you were supposed to put two spaces. With word-processing applications, you use only one.

This is because typewriters required every letter to be the same width. With fonts on computers, the widths of the letters vary just as you would have always seen in professionally published documents, books, newspapers and so forth. And with typewriters, adding an extra space after a sentence helps legibility but with word processing the programs do that for you.

In 9th grade typing class, I was taught to hit the spacebar twice after a period. Although I have to admit that these days when I type, I only use one space. And I have a friend at work who is driven nuts by it!

Being a professional writer for 16 years has taught me that with type written documents, after a period two spaces are correct. While learning to type I was also taught that there are two spaces. Three editors and for proof readers under my belt a concured that two spaces is the acceptable number after a period.
