Honestly, I believe is a student defends himself or herself, they should be given a more lenient punishment depending on the severity and the situation. If it is a two sided fight, both should be at fault. However, if you bring bullying into the picture, it should be different. If a student is confronted by someone with a history of bullying and violence, why would you treat the victim just like the assailant? I know someone from our school who was attacked by two people and didn't defend himself due to the "zero tolerance" policy. By the time the teachers broke up the fight, the victim had suffered permanent brain damage. All because he was threatened with suspension if he fought back. Personally, if I get roped into a fight, I will hit back. Then my parents will pick me up from juvy, patting me on the back for standing up for myself instead of running or letting things just happen. Bullies can only treat you like sheep if you let them.

So for all reading this, stand up for yourself. Protect yourself now and deal with the consequences afterwards. If you don't, you may never get the chance.

I believe that if you fight back to try to protect yourself after going through all other options like telling your parents, teachers, and principles you can fight back. But you should still be suspended but your a shorter time than the person who started it.

My son was going to the office with a hall pass. 3 students skipping class jumped on him and tried to throw him over the upstairs banister. He fought back resulting in one of the initiators ending up with a broke nose. He was suspended and told that he should have ran.
