I like these performers as much as the next guy, but what do these artists have to do with the 4th of July? It seems like everyone is going for the broadest pop sensibility, and oh yeah there is a holiday, so we'll throw in some fireworks.
I've lived in a number of cities in different parts of the U.S., but my favorite 4th of July concerts were in Birmingham Alabama back in the 80s. The Alabama Symphony always did an outdoor concert closing with the popular 1812 overture and of course fireworks. But, they really worked to create a sense of community spirit and the concert was broadcast on a local radio station. You would even see people in their cars pull off to the side of the road listening to the concert on the radio. The whole city seemed to stop for a short while and listen as one.
