Should designers interfere in modifying the design of work done by artisans, if it were to increase their marketability?

The word interfere is somewhat harsh and carries hierarchical implications. Intervention is softer, less intrusive and offers opportunities for two way dialogue.
It begs the question though about whether or not artisans are inherently designers.
They do undergo design processes when creating traditional work. Should they have to adapt to sophisticated urban taste or should we adapt to theirs? Who sets trends? Taste? Fashion? Are these sustainable?
Many questions that raise even more!
