I know when I was a child my mother would buy pre-made cake mixes to make cookies with for my sister and I as it was easier while she had two kids running around to make something simple from a box than to have to measure out flour, baking powder, etc. Granted my mother also baked classically and had my sister and I help her but I guess there's not always time for that.
I think today they are purchased probably still by busy mothers but I know a lot of people buy them because they think baking is hard and that makes it easier.

Ive used them in the past but they are kinda tasteless sometimes... Oodles of fudge helps though!
