I voted for flasbacks because a prequel is yet another new story and while I would enjoy it....I want to see this story move forward --it's one of my favs!
flash backs can become disorienting....especially if there is a hiatus. Prequels permit the reader to center themselves quickly after a hiatus or a rediscovery of a story. I don't know how many times I've had to completely reread just to figure out what is going on. Which I suppose serves me right for following 15 stories at a time.
