I have to agree with what this young man has said; the caption is very misleading. This young man has stated facts of the Black Community. I too raised my 33-year-old black son that he was born with three strikes against him and I began to name all three. He was born black, he was a male and was born to a teenage, unwed mother. Unfortunately, this has taught him to look down upon those of other nationalities. But it has also shown him that he needs to work very hard, which he does and to respect others of ALL walks of life, which he does. It has also given him a chip on his shoulder and I am afraid that if he is approached by the wrong person, no matter the race, he will cause unmentionable harm to them. But I thank God that he understands that he does not have to fight every battle and that he needs to put his trust in Christ and not man. Once again this article has opened up many wounds that have been created in the black communities and it is only in these communities where changes must be made. We must educate ourselves and our children in all aspects of life including but not limited to, politics, business, the world and our own communities. We do not need to fight every battle with brute force, but with our minds. This is why we now have a black President; to show us that we can indeed overcome and be elevated to high positions of office. The black community needs to know that we cannot expect others to respect us when we in fact do not respect ourselves and one another.

I do not believe that black men create racism by wearing hoodies. Look up the word racism.....it's more than an attitude, it refers to systemic injustice. Racist stereotypes existed in this country centuries before hoodies were even created. And I don't think that dressing differently would change racist thoughts. But I think the other question this blog raises is whether embracing stereotypes of violence, misogyny, brutishness, thug-like behavior, drug abuse and criminality, acting them out, and trying to glorify them helps to rationalize and justify racist thoughts and actions. I think in that way young men are partially responsible who exalt dressing down, under-achievement, objectifying women, referring affectionately to themselves as niggas and the women in their lives as bitches and other things. This widespread embracing of racist connotations is new, something that occurred just within the last 40 years of our history. We've been here over 400 years. This approach has taken us back not forward, I think, and it leads young black men to believe they ARE no better than thugs, to expect the least of themselves . They think they are somehow being cool, defiant, when actually they are verifying all the myths and contributing to the justification of racism--locking black men, even boys as young as eleven up, giving them longer and stiffer sentences, not hiring them, under-educating them and more. Our behavior does matter. Even Barack Obama has a much more difficult time, despite the fact that he does not exemplify these stereotypes, as long as there are young black men out there who actively try to do that. That is new. We used to try to steer clear from acting out these negative ideas, with a few in our community who did. Now people can't believe we come from anything else. It even affects black women. Whenever I talk about my sister and her children, people automatically assume I am talking about a single-parent household, even though I was not raised in one and she has been married for 30 years to her children's father. We all represent each other. How we act does matter. It does not erase racism. The problem is much bigger than that, but it does negate some of the justification for racist behavior and actions.

i believe no matter what we wera say or do white america will always say we are thugs.even if we wear a suit and tie everyday.also this is america not russia we have a choice in the clothes we wear . the music we listen to.freedom of speech freedom of religion is what america was built on.anything different from white society is veiwed as evil or wrong.my problem if it were a white guy wearing the same clothes......(cuz as much as they hate us they want to emulate us too).. would he have been stalked and shot i truly doubt it .

I wear hoodies after I leave the gym because its always dark and chilly I don't feel that you should be killed because if what your wearing. If someone was walking down the street in the rain with a hoody on I would not assume robbery. But that young man was running and screaming for help as a big 250 lb man with a gun chased him. I listened to the 911 call and the screams were so loud you heard them through the phone of the ladies house. He. Claimed self defense how there's a 200 lb difference and he had a gun. Could any of you imagine a guy that biv chasing you and you screaming for help no ones in sight. And he was shot in the chest up close that was a brutal murder and he should get the death penalty for that hate crime.. he even admitted on the phone with police "these coons always get away" like are you serious.
Hoodies and blue jeans should not effect if you live or die we as black's don't go around shooting White people for wearing "TRENCH" coats...

I am a teenage african american girl. The high school that i used to go to had black kids and white kids wearing the same type of clothes. You know nike sweat suits, yeah well i have a question. Since they all wear them do they all look
suspecious. Answer no. I think it was a racist act. And i if its self defense why didnt he use his hands instead of a gun. He obviously was looking to kill. Also i would like to know why he is still walking around enjoying the hot spring days when, the teenage boy cant. And im going to say it, if it was a black man he would be locked up and put away. Now why isn't he being given the same right. What is wrong with the world now days. Get real. We all know that there is nother secret behind all this.So dont play with like there isn't. Thank You

I am a 50 year old Black Woman that works in Corporate America who exercises at the company gym after work. When I leave the gym I have on sneekers and a hoodie (because my head is wet from sweating). I sometimes stop at stores on my way home. I guess that makes me suspecious and up to no good. It doesn't matter if Trayvon was Orange and Zimmerman was Green, there was no reason for any of this to happen. I'm sure Trayvon that that this person watching and following him was pedophile and when Zimmerman approached him, Trayvon attempted to defend himself. I believe that Zimmerman made up in his mind that the next time he saw someone that HE thought did not belong in his community, that he was going to shoot and ask questions later.

You have white young men also who wears the hoodies and jeans low on their butts, and you don't see them getting shot, as a matter of fact they all look the same from behind until you see their faces. I always tell my son to stop wearing hoodies and to pull your pants up, I tell him I can't tell him from the next person I see on the streets. The one different in this case is that it was raining, so I understand why Trayvon had his hoodie on. Who says that Trayvon was a young man who always wore hoodies and walked around with the hoodie up on his head? I believe its not what you wear its how you wear it. No ones to blame for Trayvon's death but Mr. Zimmerman. Who are we to judge someone by the color of their skin, or the clothes they wear? All the evidence that has come out about Mr. Zimmerman shows that he's a racist man, who target Black Afro-American young men. Zimmerman refused to listen to the dispatcher and took things into his own hands, and he didn't even have no evidence that Trayvon had commited any crime. One thing for sure and two for certain, we can speculate, assume, and come up with all kinds excuses and reasons, but the mere fact is that Zimmerman is guilty and should be arrested.
