Many people only have landlines & don't want a cell phone -like my 87 yr old mother-in-law, Our DSL comes in on our landline service. We cannot get Cable & have satilite service. Our cell service jumps in & out even with a tower within site of the house.

@Lisa -> The government is not making decisions for consumers. They are removing a regulation that REQUIRES companies provide landlines. This does not mean they are banning landlines, just allowing the free market to dictate their use.
I'm not saying I agree or disagree, just clarifying since the headline is bogus.

This is the stupidest thing I have heard of... I would like to punch the person in the face that thought of this.

Cell phone contracts are way more expensive than basic land line service. And some of us actually still have dial-up. Not everyone can afford what, to us, are luxuries. Just what we need - one more way to try to marginalize the poor.

I won't use a cell phone where I need to give out my credit card information--period--and not everything can be done online. Further, there are going to be times when cell phone service is interrupted, but land lines work just fine, and I want the security provided to my family for those times.

So if you live deep in the country and have no cell service (no towers nearby) then basically, you're screwed? So if there is an emergency and you need to call 911-sorry Charlie, youre out of luck! Makes perfect sense-nice.

My land line comes in handy during power outages and keeps my cell minutes from going through the roof when I am stuck on hold with customer service reps or utility personnel.

Your Hard Line on the wall is separate from house power. If your power goes out..This line will still work. Cordless phones work on the house electricity. These phones will not work if the power goes out.

I think the government should stop making decisions for consumers. If you don't want a landline you don't have to get one. A lot of elderly use landlines and become confused using cellphones. Our family has a cellphone plan with shared minutes. We use the landline for some calls so we don't go over our minutes. I use it to schedule appointments and to call a utility company or similar companies when I'm going to be on hold for an extended period of time. If this bill passes a lot of people will be without a job and we already have of unemployed people.

We live in a dead zone. Little to no cell service. A land line is our only option.
