It seems to me that a Symphony could be a band if it was playing non-classical music. For instance, during the collaboration between Dinuk Wijeratne and Buck 65 (which i loved, btw), I think that one could legitimately call Symphony Nova Scotia "the band." "The band" in this case just happens to be an orchestra.
Or, if say, you're at a bar and you want to sound cool you could say something like "Oh yeah, I'm in a band," I think that would be acceptable. It's bound to work better than "Hey babe, want to see my wood-wind?"
