Our spouses book club group met on Sunday, just after the last Boston terrorist was captured to discuss The Triple Agent. It was our annual meeting where spouses (all guys) are invited to join in the conversation and enjoy a pot luck dinner. There was a lively discussion enhanced by the recent tragedy at the Boston Marathon.
The Triple Agent is an easy read that chronicles the tragedy at the Khost military base in Afghanistan on New Years Eve 2009. Nine dedicated Americans in the CIA and FBI were killed as well as two Afghani employees. The suicide bombing was the work of a Jordanian doctor was thought to be a double agent working for the Jordanian's and CIA.
Some of the conclusions agreed upon by the group, were:
Mistakes were made by CIA leadership and inexperienced leaders at the Khost base and normal protocols were not followed.
A religious zealot will never change their allegiance.
Guarding against terrorism has become and will remain a way of life in our world
The Americans in the CIA, FBI, and Military who work risk their lives in remote areas of the world in relatively poor conditions are unbelievably dedicated to their mission. They make many sacrifices to protect us and we owe them a debt of gratitude.
