My parents were there. I recall being disappointed about being stuck with the ancient babysitter, Mrs. Martin, for a few more days. They didn't tell us much about it, but I recall they were rather somber, considering. At least Mrs. Martin made tasty cookies. Oh the fragmented memories of childhood.

1973 was my first Indy 500. My Father to that point had been attending the 500 with a group of work buddies and relatives. This happened to be the year the family attended. I remember everything was just gray. Even the third day when the sun did come out it really didn't brighten the atmosphere. When there was racing, it was intoxicating. All of that said, I came back in 1976 and haven't missed a race since. My Father had made 50 Indy's in a row until last year when declining health prevented him from attending. So as the saying goes, Indy 500 or Bust!
