"Soldier" - I like the atmosphere created by the colour palette and the textures. It is a contrast to military ceremonial ocassions and reminds us of the emotional context of a serving soldier 'at the front' in WW1. It also fits well with the anniversary of WW1 and how Nuneaton has a strong tradition of remembering wartime and soldiers.
"Open Cast Coal Workings, Nuneaton" - Again, some reasons as for "Soldier". It reflects a gritty mood. It shows the reality of industrialising the countryside (shown in the background). In landscape respects it might be comparable to the Somme. It pairs nicely with "Soldier"; and both being later 20thC. paintings with relevance to Nuneaton, would sit well against others in the present gallery.
