Should it be illegal to warm up your car while it's unattended?

I never lock my car doors and sometimes I even leave the keys in it over night. I always warm it up, as well. I never worry about my car being stolen because I don't live by a bunch of hoodlums. I'm not worried about getting a ticket either. Sucks to be all of you.

    1. If you have a remote starter think before you speak. It says it's illegal if the car is on with the key in the ignition. So clearly it's not in the ignition and you won't get in trouble for the remote starter.
    2. You may say it's dumb, but when you get your car stolen due to the keys being in it then you call the cops and make them deal with your dumbass problems because you left your car unlocked to warm it up.
    3. If the car is off for police vehicles they can't use their equipment and it takes time to turn on so that's why they can leave them on.
    4. Get over yourselves... Stop being idiots and actually think.

i live in ohio and see police gas at gas stations with the cars running. so because this is a public safety vehicle?? how is it more safe to leave a police car with guns in it running at a gas station, than warming up my car in MY driveway?

  • Dan - 10 years ago

Glad I'm not in ohio anymore... What a ridiculous law they have!! Even where I'm living now (nc) it does get cold here in winter and I start my car and let it run (with remote start, key fob not even in car or near it to unlock it) so it's warm and DEFROSTED so I can see where I'm going to not crash into others. I guess it's wrong to take it safe in ohio now and defrost your car to see where you're going. That makes too much sence.

Hey I had CPD stop one morning last winter and quiz me about my car running parked on the street in front of my home. I got remote start so what's the beef ??? I got an old car that stalls when cold driven.

  • gary - 10 years ago

why should the state cars be exempt. do as i say and not as i do typical ohio.

The pollution argument doesn't fly as drivers are going to warm up their cars one way or another, in or out of the car. It would be irresponsible to do otherwise as it would mean driving with impaired visibility, endangering self and others. Pollution in Ohio is directly tied to industry and indifferent owners far more than vehicles.

Believe me, most cops DO have better things to do & don't want to waste their time on chicken s#%t cites like that. Sure, some will enforce it, but most will drive past or offer a verbal warning. Too bad the LAWMAKERS force the hands of local LE. Common sense at all levels is becoming scarce!

A friend of mine recieved a citation for this in a small village, but as you said emergancy vehicles are exempt. But this village leaves their police cars run continuously so he took a unattended police car and pulled it behind the police station and left a nasty note attached to the windshield making his point.

  • Melissa - 10 years ago

Cops leave there cars running all the time when they go in places. So why should I get in trouble for making sure my kids are warm?!?

  • joe - 10 years ago

what's next is the law or government gonna find a way to fine us, stating were not wiping our azz's correctly ?

I have remote start on my vehicle thru my OnStar. It's monitored, locked, ignition locked and requires the key to operate anything in the vehicle. Almost 90% of vehicles require that the brake pedal be pressed to even put the vehicle into a gear. I could see this being illegal in a public parking lot, but in on private property or a parking garage? Are they insane? To me it is just another way for the Governments to make money off all of us. I'm very willing to bet that the people that put this law into affect "warm up" their vehicles or have their vehicle "warmed up" before they are driven around. I'm sure a police officer is going to run around checking vehicles. It is no wonder we have the crime rate we do now days. The police are to busy with the petty stuff, just don't care or are apart of the crimes and trying to do CYA. Sad and true.

REMOTE STARTERS LOCKS UR CAR AND IF U DONT PUTKEY IN IGNITION AND PUT FOOT ON BRAKE THE CAR SHUTS DOWN SO FINE ME I DRIVE A SNOW PLOW TRUCK REMOTE STARTERS ROCK

  • Teri Gorecki - 10 years ago

I just purchased a car with a remote start. It can be set for 5, 10 or so minutes, then turns off if the key is not in the ignition and turned twice. If the car is locked, it should not be a problem!

  • jim - 10 years ago

Most cases auto start you can not move the car until key is in the ignition. Our car shuts off after 10 minutes.

  • Jo - 10 years ago

I had a remote start on my car and if you tried to put it in gear without the key being in the ignition, the car would automatically shut down to prevent anyone from stealing it.

  • Charles Mote - 10 years ago

increase the law for swiping a car.. 20 years minimum.
    and a teenager 10 years.

and NO slap on the wrist.

  • Allan - 10 years ago

Well this law does not mean anything. I have seen cops leave there car on, with no one inside while thy eat at subway. or come in to my store to buy something. I work midnights at a gas station, one night a police officer and I talked for at least a good two hours about random things. while drinking coffee, when we where about done he went out in the cold started his cruiser and came back inside as his car warmed up. Point being there are a lot of pointless laws. one is that you can beat your wife on Sundays on court steps. laws are enforced by cops, if the cop feels that its dumb and no one should get in trouble. Well then that law will not be enforced.

  • verna - 10 years ago

Now let me understand this. Because we do not have garage space, we have installed a remote control to get the car warmed up and deiced. The doors stay locked. Are the police going to drive up and down the streets, to check the cars??? Really!! This whole world has gone CRAZY!!!! To, Mitzy, who commented earlier, good thing you moved out of Ohio. Your grammar is awful. Thank goodness you left our fine State. One less person who must have failed their English class.

  • Mitzy - 10 years ago

Unbelievable, don't Ohio has better things to do then to create ridiculous laws? Why would anyone wants to get in an iced over snow filled unsafe vehicle specially when there is children involved. This is why I moved out of Ohio. Fix the pot holes in those damn streets, that should be the law. Pathetic!

  • Nyla parker - 10 years ago

JERKS, try and stop me, there will be holy hell to pay for YOUR consequences

  • jeff - 10 years ago

I have remote start on my cars and it makes sure doors are locked when it starts.

  • Bob - 10 years ago

    Remote start should be ok

  • Tom - 10 years ago

    To the 10%. Really?

  • michele - 10 years ago

Cars are made with remote start options these days. If you do not warm up your car it can be very unsafe to drive because its cold, possibly iced over, windows still foggy etc creating driving hazard and not bring able to see clearly. People do not have time to sit in a cold car for it to warm up. I think that's ridiculous.. especially of you have children you commute around.

  • jim - 10 years ago

Really? The world wants to worry about this????? O well I've got a new born kid and I'll be a monkeys uncle if I'm putting her in a cold car so once again ohio you can forget about it I'll let my car run 24/7 if I want .....its america"land of the free" well I thought!!!!!!

  • Ursula - 10 years ago

I have a remote start. And, it looks like only 1 out of the 3 items that make it illegal is that the engine is running. So...since all 3 are not met under the law...warming your car with a remote start...Legal?

  • rachel - 10 years ago

I have to warm up my car or it won't run correctly. Sometimes I don't have time to sit in it while it warms up. What about those who have remote start? Is that going to be considered illegal?
