Apparently school is such an EMERGENCY that students have to go. During the last snow storm over half the class was not there, 20 mins later, half a dozen people came in the school by walking 4 blocks in that freezing weather. DO WE REALLY HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL SOMEONE FALLS AND GETS SEVERELY INJURED SO THAT SOMEONE WOULD GETS HIS MIND CLEARED?

  • Susan - 10 years ago

Does this mayor look at the weather channel, he is such a stupid ass. Let him com and pick my kid up and drive him to school because I'm not doing that.. I'm so pissed.. What a jerk he is

Carmen, first if all if u know the nyc teaching curriculum, teachers can not teach anything new if the majority of students are absent at anytime. Where do the children go to school where they watch movies all day?? Not in my school. Stop bashing the teachers its the mayors fault that we will be babysitting them tomorrow

Everyone does not have an easy access to public transportation!

as per Governor ---“As we continue to prepare for the Nor’easter that is expected to hit parts of New York State tonight and tomorrow, I urge New Yorkers in the affected regions to consider staying home,” Governor Cuomo said. “During the storm, snow is projected to accumulate at a rate of two to three inches per hour, which will make it challenging for plow crews to keep roads clear. Drivers should stay off of the roads if at all possible, and exercise extreme caution if they absolutely must travel. Remember to check on your neighbors and loved ones throughout the storm, monitor local news reports to stay informed and heed the advice of emergency management professionals.”

State offices, facilities, and operations will remain open on February 13, 2014. However, non-essential employees, in light of the expected weather conditions in the Long Island, New York City, Hudson Valley and Capital District regions, may absent themselves from work with charge to appropriate leave credits and supervisory approval.”

I can't believe it's even a question. that man has messed up 2x already.of course schools should be closed.not one snowplow spreading salt here in bronx.he is not ahead on his game.smh...I'm not feeling this Man for our people our kids..our city.

Schools should definitely be closed tomorrow because not everyone will be able to get to school. Even if schools are open, teachers will most likely watch a movie or give out a worksheet because there will be many students absent anyways. Why teach a new lesson when half the class isn't even here? It is not worth going through that weather when you're just going to watch a movie in class which u can do at home anyways. I'm sure Mayor De Blasio would want his kids to be safe and stay home.

  • Concerned citizen - 10 years ago

De Blasio is a callous douche. He should close the schools.

  • Angela - 10 years ago

During the last storm, the Mayor said roads are hazardous - stay off of them, but in the next breath he says schools are opened. That's an oxymoron if I ever heard one. Mayor De Blasio, you can't have it both ways.

  • aida - 10 years ago

It's already hard to get around on public transportation because of all the snow they still haven't bounced back. Also all the ice that's on the ground right now will be covered in snow so u can't tell where there's just snow or snow on top of ice

  • John - 10 years ago

I wish the mayor would realize that many NYC residents CAN'T just take public transportation. I live in Rockaway, where busses don't run well and the subway often freezes. So what then? More importantly, the last snow day we were open, over 50% of students didn't show! Why put safety at stake? Close the schools tomorrow out of consideration for your teachers and studetns!

Staten Island does NOT have underground subways so our grounds do NOT get heated. Staten Island should base their school closings on what Newark, Bayone, Elizabeth, Jersey City, etc do because we get the same weather and dangerous conditions as they do and they close their schools. Why bother taking this poll, cause NYC hardly ever closes schools and this poll will fall on deaf ears.

  • Sandy - 10 years ago

De Blasio should close schools because if you tell parents to take
There kids to school there gonna beore kids sick .more kids in the ER .etc

  • Lynda - 10 years ago

Yes, school should be closed especially Staten Island. I drive my daughter to school and we are about 3 miles a 20 minute car ride with traffic. I wouldn't trust the school bus going to down one steep hill to get to school. She has already used about 5 days of absentee because of the past snow storms. Sorry will not risk my daughter life because you won't close schools.

NEW YORK CITY IS ALL SCREWED UP !!!!!!

  • Jamie - 10 years ago

Most teachers in Brooklyn and Queens live on Long Island. They dont have an option that wouldn't take 3 hours to get to work.

  • Jeanette - 10 years ago

Yes close schools I am a School bus driver it is very dangerous

  • Jeanette - 10 years ago

Yes close schools I am a School bus driver it is very dangerous

  • Ellen - 10 years ago

Yes he should close, I am a school crossing guard and I see how dangerous it is for the kids trying to cross the street while cars are sliding all over the place. If the sidewalks are not shoveled then the kids have to walk in the street which is doubly dangerous because they have to try to avoid the cars and busses that are going by. It would be safer to close the schools so we can all stay off the roads like the mayor asks us to

School should be close I am the parent of 3 child the struggles they go threw the cold. The roads would be slippery what if people or children gets into an accident. Yesterday on my way to pick up my daughter this little boy slipped on ice and legs were broken and had to call backup. We do not want to put our NYC children in danger and freezing to death NO THANK YOU ! BUS MAY BE CROWDED AND NO WAY TO GET IN! there should be no school due to the fact because of the blizzard or storm.

  • Lisa Scarf - 10 years ago

They say stay OFF THE ROADS - but then how do we drive our kids to school or get to work?? No sidewalks on Staten Island so no way to get to public transportation!!!

  • Zoraida - 10 years ago

School shoulld be closed I live in the Bronx and take my son to school in Manhattan not only schools .. Work as well who in the right mind will want to go out tomorrow if today's freezing how will tomorrow be .. I see people and kids slipping everywhere because of the ice

  • Anyraulito - 10 years ago

School should be close and deblasio should be the one cleaning the street so our kids could walk to school safe

  • Patricia - 10 years ago

Staten Island does not have much in public transportation. Also most of our streets are after primary and secondary so we get plowed later. Sanitation can only do so much at once. If you won't close school because of children eating or to have a place to go then let children know it will be an excused absence at least. So that they don't have to worry about getting to school when it is opened. New York is like it never snowed, snow is almost all gone. Come to Staten Island the snow never left. Don't put teachers. Staff, crossing guards, Kids, parents, Bus drivers at risk. Close schools we have another day built in for snow. (sorry fixed my writing and added lol)

  • lucy - 10 years ago

It's still bad out there! My daughter (14) just fell outside....there is ICE all over...covered with fresh sow, sure to be even safer for our kids to get to school!

  • christina - 10 years ago

My favorite from the last storm was all schools are open but theres a driving advisory so stay off the roads... anyone see the dilemma in that one? I dont have children and I fully understand how their education is vital. I also understand that not everyone has the option of PT (for whatever reason) or the kids cant take the yellow bus. I drove to CSI in the last big snow storm, I was terrified for my life the entire drive and I was alone, no kids in the car. None of the roads had been plowed yet not primary or secondary, forget tertiary! This was a 4 hour window! The drive home was just as bad. I have all wheel drive and still slid a lot. Close the schools, add another day to the end of the school year (which includes myself) so everyone can stay off the roads and be safe!
