Shortly after we left Alaska and moved to Modesto CA I was having trouble adjusting to the difference between Alaska and CA. I knew nothing about baseball. during one vacation to WA while still living in Alaska I was playing sandlot baseball. The guys told me to hit the ball. I hit the ball and ran home to mom. I had no idea where home was. But back to Modesto. One of the boys in my 6th grade class had kind of taken me under his wing and was showing me some of the ropes so to speak. He taught me how to kick a foot ball from a tee, and how to hold the ball when punting. But one day, and I still don't know why, he told me to go back to Alaska and freeze my brain. I still don't know why. But I can still see his face and feel the hurt. Being a preachers kid was a tough row to hoe. Being held to the high standards of the preacher, but at the same time trying to be a kid and be accepted was a hard thing to do. Now the shoe is on the other foot. Now I am trying to guide students to new hand skills. All I want is for them to get the skill. But at times they seem to be fighting me. I just apologized to a student I raised my voice to. A hard thing to do but I feel better now.
