The excuse that kids forget things now and such is silly. I am 40. Our generation basically created the internet, mobile technology, 300 channels on your television, and just about anything tech based. I can remember my first day of school being on my birthday in late August and getting out in late May. Our generation didn't get stupid in the summer. We were also in better shape as far as fitness and health. Yes there are many distractions for kids now. As a parent, take away the video games and cell phones and make the kids active an play. Labor to Memorial day is what the school year should be.
Also in about a week, I can't wait for every news channel in the city to do a report on how hot the schools are in the middle of August. Well DUH!!

The kids need breaks during the school year. Give them the 2 weeks needed. Bring them back sooner in the summer, while things are still fresh in their memory. Parents can schedule vacations in the fall, and they schedule spring break vacations anyways, with the extra week, you don't have to rush your vacation.

I believe children are starting school at a good time. I remember going back to school and the teachers had to refresh our memory for the first 2 maybe 3 months. With my children now they only have to do that for the first 2 or 3 weeks then they can move forward to what needs to be taught. That's my opinion though!!

Why can't kids go back after Labor day in September? I remember I did? Education isn't going no where,it will be here for generations to come. June and July is too short and it gives them a chance to enjoy the Indiana State fair.
