Who handled the Interview Better?

The bigger issue is that law enforcement should notify area schools and childcare facilities when there is an active investigation/pursuit in the area. However, it isn't clear if prior notification was an option in this case. Nevertheless, this isn't the first time a situation like this has occurred; and, it won't be the last. Ms. Oliver did a fabulous job of defending her business practices and safety procedures.

  • Louis - 9 years ago

Just because it didn't turn into another Sandy Hook, doesn't mean the conditions for that type of situation weren't laid out! You have the children of your clients and you owe them complete safety. If there is one place on earth I don't want you to just open the door its where my children are being watched while im at work. I trust you to protect them. She thinks that this personal touch of opening the door and greeting everyone is what the public wants? This isn't walmart! She even admitted that she doesn't recognize everyones face that comes to her business...... even more reason to make them identify themselves before opening up our children to harm!

  • Shawn - 9 years ago

Did Terry Oliver go to somebody's law school? If not, she needs an honorary JD. I suggest one from Howard University. As a graduate of Howard undergrad, she made me very proud to be an American. She spoke well! She was poised. She was confident. And she was very clear on her position: there was a safety plan in place and it was executed.

The reporter seemed to have an agenda. He seemed to want Terry Oliver to admit that she and her staff were wrong or otherwise acted negligently. He seemed to want to blame the victims. However, his fingers (and Terry Oliver more than helped him to see this) were pointing at the wrong people!

I loved when she said, "Viable business!" She even added in how long they been in business.

    #Shamelessplug #goodadvertising #wherecanisignmychildup #superstar

Trey Somgz or Paul or whoever you are...blah!

  • Dorothy - 9 years ago

I feel like everyone has this situation sadly mistakened! With all these school targeted crimes, no one can no longer open their businesses to people who need to use the bathroom. She is wrong! The daycare I work at has a system in which every parent has a different 4 digit code to open the door the first door that brings them inside from the cold or heat. Then a desk associate is in full view to see head to toe the person standing at the door and if recognized automatically buzz them in. However as a substitute, when I arrived the first day, the deal associate was not familiar with me and came to the glass and asked me for ID to make sure I said who I really was. Unfortunately when you have others people's children being hospitable is not the best thing to do. Also for the director to compare her situation to Sandy Hook is insulting. Sandy hook let someone in who probably went there himself!! So to them he is not a stranger!! What he did was inhumane and I can't blame them for opening the door for someone they thought they knew. If I were a parent at that daycare that Director would get a nice peice of my mind! Granted no one was hurt, but situation could have went way left if the police followed that suspect in with shooting guns!!!! The reporter knew exactly what he was talking about asking her the same question over, because he couldn't believe her confidence in her poor decision!!!

  • Adrienne - 9 years ago

THE Reporter IS A TERRIBLE One He Tried SO Hard To Turn THAT Into A Negative Story WOULD It HAVE BEEN BETTER If He Made A Story ABOUT How Wonderful They did. Instead he did a terrible job at an interview shouldn't even have a job. Then when he isn't getting the response he wants he is looking away rolling his eyes and all you see is side of his face. She did an amazing job bc I would have just said thank you and walked away.

  • B. Craig - 9 years ago

This is just what you need when someone involves you in something you had nothing to do with! This lady is guilty of nothing and has been put on trial. We can all say what we would do if something happens. Ms. Oliver and her staff handled this situation very well in my opinion. If this was a white business they would have had a parade for her and called her a hero!

  • Linda Lou McCall - 9 years ago

Trey Paul is a joke! First, he has a "rap name" so who can take him seriously. Second, he was trying to make a story where none existed by throwing a responsible black business owner under the bus. But Ms. Oliver handled his stupid butt! He didn't know when to stop. It was not her fault that a drug dealer tried to break into her business. It had no reason to even be on her property at all so why should she be held to account for a situation beyond her control? Like she said, it didn't turn into a Sandy Hook with a boatload of kids being killed in cold blood. She repeatedly emphasized that her staff perfectly executed the center's safety plan, that no one was hurt, and that she's running a customer-based business. Yet "Lil Trey Paul" just kept asking her why she didn't use the intercom. If I was a prospective customer, I would have gotten back in my car if someone refused to open the door and greeted me via intercom. After watching this, I would not hesitate to leave a child in Ms. Oliver's care!

  • Maurice B - 9 years ago

Smh at this reporter right now it don't make no sense to ask the same question over and over again that stupid and it shows that you are trying throw her off on live television just smh right now

  • Donna - 9 years ago

Ms. Oliver handled the reporter perfectly! She did not waiver, panic nor was she put off by how many ways he rephrased his question so that a negative light could be placed on her, the staff nor the owners of the Child Care Center. Hooray for Ms. Oliver. She has excellent verbal and visual skills. Ms. Oliver addressed exactly what needed to be addressed, the safety of all involved. Ms. Oliver defused a potentially dangerous situation in a public establishment. I believe she could possibly share her skills with other public venues. Thank you Ms. Oliver for that excellent display of media handling!

  • Misspolly - 9 years ago

The reporter tried to intimidate the day care director and throw her off, but it backfired on him. Is this typical of how he does and interview to be aired on TV? I am not a reporter and far from being one, but I think he broke all the rules. He is a real push over. Way to go Ms. Daycare Director. Keep up the good work.

  • Jerome Gwinn - 9 years ago

Right string....wrong yo-yo!!!....sadly this interview is so typical of The Fox News Network. Fox has for years led the masses to the land of don't use your brains....let us tell you what to think. Ms. Oliver was so very articulate and professional into not buying into this trap interview. The television news director along with this jackass reporter should on air apologize to the school, Ms. Oliver, and the parents for such a discrediting and unprofessional interview.

  • Susan - 9 years ago

This director handled her business, to bad this reporter did not.

  • Kim - 9 years ago

She did a great job. I would like to know what schools ( elementary, middle, high, child development) you have visited that verifies a visitors identify through the use of an intercom. I am an educator. All the schools I have visited, including the school I work at, verify the identity of a visitor once they ENTER the building. They meet with the secretary and she verifies their identity through the computer system. The computer system is INSIDE the building. All who are quick to complain and are hasty to judge I encourage you to visit a school before you make comments.

  • Javon - 9 years ago

The director handled herself in a very professional manner. First of all, anyone stating that a child development center or school should have parents or potential clients speak through an intercom is very unrealistic. Most schools verify the identity of visitors prior to them walking through the school. HOWEVER, they still have to enter the building to show their drivers license/I.D. Therefore, the individual is still going to have access to the students. Furthermore, who wants to send their child to a school and the school climate is that of a prison. Even at a prison you don't talk to someone outside the through an intercom.

  • ??? - 9 years ago

He should go back to school. As an interviewer he should have more question to ask and try better at congratulating a PERSON on doing such a great job at keeping those within their facility safe. And those who voted for the anchor man we know you all are from the same historical background as him. RACIST PEOPLE. Don't understand why you you can't look at a person as a person. That really makes you ignorant.

  • Jerry Johnson - 9 years ago

That reporter had an agenda. She saw through it and destroyed it perfectly.

  • Terry Wilson - 9 years ago

    He's an idiot!

  • jeff - 9 years ago

Perfect example of someone who cannot admit they were wrong. They obviously have the intercom for a reason, they had it installed to use it. They should have used it. She should be fired, all these people that say she handled the interview correctly your crazy. she pretty much only had one answer, "this is a business" no shit. Everyone knows its a business. But this business having other peoples kids in their care should take better measures to keep them safe. And then she had the nerve to bring up sandy hook and try to put blame on them for what some sick person who had toes to that school did. That person wasnt a stranger. Probably why he was able to get into school in first place. This person was, had no kid with him. Running from the cops so he probably looked suspicious and sweating his ass off. She was wrong but she cant admit it.

  • Jess - 9 years ago

I see this Mimi person above, along with others are comfortable leaving their children in an establishment that mimics prisons. Well, there's others as well as me that welcome, appreciate and only patronize hospitable businesses. I find America's behavior is appalling to frown upon a conscious decision to be good to people. Furthermore, if that man wanted to get in the doorway, he could have broken it down easily.

  • butahfli - 9 years ago

She was very professional, and she did admit that she and her staff would look at the possibility of using the intercom system. SHE JUST DIDN'T SAY WHAT HE WANTED HER TO SAY.

  • Knowledge - 9 years ago

Ms.Oliver handled that interview so well that it gave me goosebumps! She articulated her responses with integrity and honesty. This interview should be a blueprint on how business owners particularly black should tactfully and articularley address media/public etc. I commend you Ms.Oliver!

  • Mr.Brooks - 9 years ago

As someone who works for a bank and uses a intercom, this woman handled her self correctly. And for those who has an issue your not as intelligent as you think. You would never want to go to a business and have to talk through a door intercom it's only for before and after business after and for safely. Not everyone is stopped as more business try not to racial profile and be more welcoming. People think more before we talk negatively, her team are to be thanked and look at the big people it was not another Sandy incident.

  • BobbyV - 9 years ago

Why was he rolling his eyes? Because he was made a fool trying to make her look foolish. Use the intercom for his dumb ass next time lol

  • Card13 - 9 years ago

I don't know why everyone thinks that using the intercom would solve this issue. If they got on the intercom he could have simply said, "hello, I'd like to learn about potentially enrolling my child". At that point, someone would still come to the door to talk to him. Having the door locked is enough. None of the schools or day care centers that I go to lock the front door (I was in education for a few years)

  • Caffeinated Yogini - 9 years ago

Ms. Oliver handled her business with aplomb despite the fact that her daycare policy is really lax. She deflected well enough to expose that reporter as a hack.

  • Mimi - 9 years ago

Wow...I just read a lot of the comments. I thought he did a great job of trying to get her to admit what they did, letting this man in was incredibly dangerous to the children. They followed their plan? I'm sure that would have worked real well if he had a gun. Trey did his best but she obviously had no intention of admitting what they did was just downright stupid and irresponsible.

  • Mimi - 9 years ago

They're very lucky. I don't care how many times she repeated "we are a service and we welcome everyone in because they are a potential client." If my child went there he would be gone so fast now that I knew they put their business before the safety of my child. How many more children have to die before idiots like this woman accept there is more danger in the world now?

  • Albert Matthews Jr. - 9 years ago

I was a public servant for 25 years and invited the media to events sponsored by my organization and one thing they attempted was interviewing someone with no training. I briefed all participants and had them designate their own Public Information Officer, thus solving this potential PR disaster. The Day Care Center operator was excellent and she made very clear the positive points about her business that she wanted the Public to hear; Safety, Trained Staff, adhering to Policies and Procedures, No Injuries to Children or Employees, A viable and established business for over 21 years, answered all the questions with poise, integrity, and dignity, and doing all this while pointing out the need for the Mayor to do something about crime in the City. This interview can serve as a training model for anyone who is or desire to become a Public Information Officer or can expect to become a spokesperson for representing your business or organization. Excellent Interview!

  • Ivy - 9 years ago

Wow, he needs to really look at this video and reflect on what not to do. He looks like such a fool. Obviously not listening to any of her replies. What an embarrassment for this station.

  • Dee Done - 9 years ago

He was rolling his eyes and huffing and puffing, he should be ashamed of himself and counseled by his superiors regarding this interview.

  • Ruby Garnett - 9 years ago

This lady was on top of her game. Actually she was in charge of the interview even though he was asking the questions. He probably figured that out by the time he got back to the station. This was a teachable moment for him. Hopefully he learned how not to insult an interviewee by asking the same question in several different ways in an effort to trip her up. You could tell he was irritated. She would be a great politician. She handled him as if to say--you got the right string but the wrong yo yo baby.

  • Ms.De - 9 years ago

She told him off politely professionally, and you could tell he was getting frustrated because she wasn't saying what he wanted to hear. The End

  • Principle matters - 9 years ago

Fox News is one of the most unprofessional news outlets. I've watched them for several years as the poke and prod into others life to show them in a less than credible light. This time the camera was turned on them. The Day Care Director was professional and STOOD HER GROUND when speaking with the reporter. She was awesome! Shame on your poor reporters taste and moral ethics, FOX NEWS! I will continue to protest any ventures that are related to "fix" in any shape form or fashion.

  • Kisha - 9 years ago

my sister handled herself well nand professional.. She was the victim here not the perpetrator.

  • Patricia - 9 years ago

WOW!! He was determined that he was going to make her say something different each time he asked the question a different way. But she kept her composer and stood behind her business and her employees, for handling the situation and keeping the children and themselves safe. One other question that I would have asked the reporter after I put Sandy Hook out there, and her interest in what the city government would do, If I was her I would have asked why she and her day care was not notified by the city that there was a criminal being chased in her area so that shoudl could put her school on lock down, as they do some of the public schools.

  • Emia Johnson-Sorrell - 9 years ago

Bravo! She handled it all with class and kept her beautiful composure. She is about a business that thrives on keeping everyone safe. She has paid attention to other unfortunate incidents and carried the lessons learned or mistakes made into her own responsibility of running a safe daycare with the awareness of what could happen to them one day. She was definitely great and I she her as being a wonderful example of how to handle the media and run a successful business. I have nothing but positive love for this lady right here! May you continue to thrive in caring for our innocent future while God keeps you all safe, even from the media. Emia

  • jequane - 9 years ago

She was amazing! That reporter needs to find another line of work....

  • Dean - 9 years ago

Terry Oliver did a great job. She knew what was important. I think Trey Paul and the news station owe her a public apology. He was extremely unprofessional for continuing to try and provoke her.

  • Vanessa - 9 years ago

I would love to know her!
She showed us grace under fire, professionalism, oratory excellence and tenacity!!! I'm proud of her. I respect that she stood up and protected her staff and was astute enough to use that opportunity to advertise her VIABLE BUSINESS!! YOU DID THAT MS. OLIVER!!!
THAT WAS DEFINITELY AT TKO! Ms. Terry (knock you out) Oliver.

  • Debbie - 9 years ago

This is a perfect example of how slanted our media is today. The media is responsible for much of the racism and division in communities.

  • Kaimah - 9 years ago

I think most of us agree that the director shouldn't have mentioned Sandy Hook. However, I'm pleased with the measures taken to secure everyone's safety. lt's just too bad Ms. Oliver had to repeat herself several times so the reporter could understand lol. He clearly tried to make a bigger story by provoking Ms. Oliver into a tantrum. She instead kept it professional and classy and he seemed very uncomfortable. I also loved the way she reminded him how careless it was to set up a sting operation so close to a daycare. Her composure was a bit unsettling for him. He probably wishes he'd said, "back to you, Bob" early in that interview, ha!

  • Mayo1958 - 9 years ago

    he was a BUTTHEAD

  • Nikki - 9 years ago

She can mention what she wants! And she did just that! #bosslady

  • stacey - 9 years ago

She shouldn't have mentioned Sandy Hook.

  • Janet - 9 years ago

In his failed attempt to be a cutting edge reporter, he got his head and ego handed to him!!
His ineptitude was evident and he asked the SAME question repeatedly, with emphasis, and he looked increasingly more stupid!!!

  • Mr.P - 9 years ago

She was very, very Professional and she answered the same question over and over again without getting angry so she was sure the staff handled the situation well.I'm proud of her.

  • why - 9 years ago

He underestimated the black women as does most people who has a made up thought process of us. She destroyed all of his tactics, he tried to make it about her which was wrong as do most that analyzes us from the sideline. Great job! " HOW MAY I HELP YOU"

  • Jozette - 9 years ago

why so much air time? The reporter was a airhead

  • Juls - 9 years ago

She was professional and handled herself very well. However Sandy Hook had an individual enter with the intent to kill vs someone coming into her daycare center running from the police, this is not a fair comparison. Someone with intent to kill would have killed the person who answers the front door and then the children would have been In danger. truly she should reevaluate using the intercom for the sake of the children and not for the business.

  • Michelle Hill - 9 years ago

Ms Oliver was great and the news reporter was clearly trying to throw her under the bus but she was not having it. He met his match with her. I do wish Ms. Oliver would have not called out the name of the other school. She was doing a great job making her point and could have referenced other school tragedies without calling out the name. That was a painful comment.

  • Elliott - 9 years ago

That wasn't an interview, he was trying to provoke an incident to make news worthy broadcast, instead he not only got handled, but, if she wanted, she could pursue charges, its borderline harassment... I hope his ass got reamed for that poor and reckless performance...

  • Parent - 9 years ago

She was very professional his question did make sense but to ask the same question over and over was pointless. I do worry about the safety of kids in daycares or schools that don't have security. This situation could have been worse. But thank God it wasn't. I don't think they should open the door before asking his purpose for entrance but he could easily lied and still gained entrance. Just like she said everybody enter that door is a stranger until you get to know them. A plan must be executed once an incident take place and the daycare staff handled that well without further incident or injury.

  • Coach - 9 years ago

Who is this dumb ass field reporter? Because she made him look foolish and he should be taking the garbage out of the news station now, instead of doing journalism!!!

  • Coach - 9 years ago

  • Mo - 9 years ago

Ms.Oliver was professional an kept her composure well. He was baiting her w/ the same question over and over. It was a rookie move and she executed perfectly!!!!!

  • toya - 9 years ago

This anchor was horrible. I continued to ask the same question over and over. Seemed new to his position
