Do you think chickens should be allowed in Calgary yards?

Why are chickens illegal in Calgary??!! I think it's the stupidest idea on Earth! I love chickens so so much, I find them so so sweet! People think they are loud and smelly... fricking dogs are so much louder than chickens! If people find them smelly then they can suck it. Chickens are just as equal as dogs. Dogs are so fricking loud and annoying! Most chickens don't fuss unless you stress them out. A family member has chickens on a farm and they LOVE us! I know everything to know about chickens! People can have chickens if they want to! They are living animals too! I don't care what the government thinks about having pet chickens.

It surprising that you can keep big dogs but not chicken. Does government right take away right from citizen to grow you own food. This is tyrannical.

I'm surprised this is under the scrutiny of council when it should be an indisputable given that anyone could raise chickens. Such a harmless way of providing healthy and nutritious food for your family.

Why would they not even consider a pilot project? There's already potentially 300 illegal coops and they're worried about legalizing 20? Encompassing chickens under the responsible pet owners bylaw seems like a sure way to make sure chickens are being raised responsibly. If people are going to raise chickens illegally, why not add some regulations rather than encourage vigilante chicken farmering.

A small backyard flock isn't even comparable to a large flock of chickens.
It would be the same as comparison of owning a couple pet cats to 15 plus pet cats.
It's unfortunate that people who are opposed feel the need to share their ignorant, uninformed opinions. Backyard chickens have been working in large and small cities/towns and with little to no ill effects.
    Inform yourselves, educate yourselves.
We have had backyard chickens for months with a neighbor not even knowing they were there.

With certain limit restrictions in place, this could work just fine ! There are some pretty junky back yards in this city, along with lots of dog owners with some pretty smelly back yards..

I can't wait to sit out on my patio on a hot summer afternoon and listen to squawking chickens while the stink of chicken poop wafts on the breeze from the yard next door.
Anyone who thinks that urban chicken farmers will not abuse their privilege or cause neighborhood disputes is deluding themselves. Worst idea ever.

Reminds me of a child that promises to do all the chores necessary to look after and raise a puppy. It is human nature to slack off on most tasks as time goes on and this would be no different. Not everyone would be diligent in cleaning the coops twice a week as promised. The resulting filth would lead to disputes with neighbours, extra costs of by law enforcement and lower property values. You don't buy a half million dollar home in the burbs to be next to a chicken farm. This is the stupidest idea I have heard in awhile so I have no doubt it will be continually put before council by social engineers who never take no for an answer. Once taught to ride bikes chickens would soon be allowed anywhere in the city.

Instead of a pilot project would be urban chicken farmers can watch the above "chicken busters" video for a little insight into how it might work. The fact is that many people are not capable of raising domestic animals let alone raising livestock as pets then killing and eating them in front of the kids. Urban chickens are a bad idea and Calgary animal services is already overrun with abandoned pets. If you want a pet go to the SPCA and adopt one, if you want fresh eggs take a short drive and support one of the real farmers that are just outside the city.

If you want to raise chickens, move to a farm!

A few chickens 5 or 6 would be an asset to soil amendments, bug control and are pretty. Certainly less of a nuisance than my yard full of sparrows and their droppings everywhere.
