I was taught by my dad to treat all people the same, no matter what.
I don't have a well paid job but I'm happy and would help anyone in any way I could.
Beggars belief how anyone can look at the three options and pick any but " yes " .
Whatever is happening to the world??

even though such a small percentage how can people who chose either of the other options live with them selves ??? they must be so full of hate and bile, seriously hope one day that these people are in that position, godbless the poor and needy and hope one day the tide changes for you

The shop I work with produce so much waste it's unreal! Majority of the time it's because the packaging has been ruined so the product itself is leaking out, so it's justified in a way. But sometimes - due to use by/best before dates - perfectly good food is put into waste!
I love what Sainsbury's do. Why can't every store do this? Then food banks wouldn't have to actively go to the store themselves and hope that people will get some stuff when doing their shopping, which I usually see at Tesco.
I agree with Stan, just wait till it's you in that position! I've never been in that position myself but I've spoke to many people who are. They sit outside, rain or shine, their eyes with deep bags and their eyes themselves look huge. I've done small gestures like gone into Greggs, bought soup or a sausage roll and a coffee. Their gratitude is unreal! Yet I serve school kids everyday I work (pretty much) and they're ridiculously rude and obnoxious. They just wangle money in your face instead of giving you their food they want and make themselves look like a fool.
Anyway, I'm rambling! The point is: some waste is justified, some most definitely isn't! And people who little, or nothing, are much more well mannered and charitiable than some people who have money.

Excellent news coverage, excellent survey and nice comments in general. Just goes to show the majority of people are decent and care about things like starvation. This is an excellent bit of public service this website. Fair play to all those involved. Well done!!

Instead of having to build a margin into the price to allow for food that goes to waste and carrying the higher rate of Landfill Tax, why not reduce the prices so more people could afford to buy the products on the first place? Or make sure there is more control over stocking levels?

I think it's rediculous how much food is wasted and yet there's loads of people around the world struggling to eat... some supermarkets throw away food just because the packaging is ruined!!!! Just because no one would wanna buy it just because the outside packaging is slightly broke or torn.. yet the world says about us paying money to help these people who are struggling which most of the money doesn't even help them why don't we do the right thing by stopping wastage and give the food to those who desperately need it, even clothes etc.. its not about who's richer or who's better so they get better stuff our world was not made to be that way so why should it be that way now! I think it's rediculous... definitely think France are doing the right thing. Well done France good on you. But I will say that id we do do that dont just give them the actually gone off stuff because we want to help them not make them I'll.

Do you think supermarkets should give unsold food to charity?
Does anyone really have to answer that question ?? .... Common Sense should give anyone the answer ....
Way to go Sainsbury's leading the way by the sounds of it !! ....Unlike Tesco who prosecute people for being so hungry that have to resort to rummaging in bins
As for Sell buy and Best Before Dates ..... Here's a little story...
Once upon a time there was a city, a city in which people used to buy food without packaging.
During this time people would buy just the amount of food that they needed.
People would smell the food to make sure it was ripe for eating.
Sour food would go in a large trough, all the waste peelings would also go in the trough.
The waste in the trough then used to feed the pigs ...
Bloody Sell by and Best Before dates .... USE YOUR COMMON SENSE !!!!! Use your nose !!

I don't see why the UK should have charities we are a very rich nations , we spend billions on killing each other through warfare, and giving out foreign aid ,why can't we support the less fortunate also I do support a local charity (I sound like a hypocrite)

Who is callous enough to vote option 2?
I'd like to see if you change your vote if you're ever in that situation!

Why does someone have to be blamed???

  • Richard - 9 years ago

This makes perfect sense but the big question comes up when someone eats something past its best and gets ill as a result. Who is going to be blamed?

I work for Sainsbury's and we already do this, we have a homeless shelter pick the food up daily!
