I think Henrico County should _____ the name of the Confederate Hills Recreation Center.

I agree with Ms Shelton's position. If she feels it would be a disservice to have the birthday event of her 80yr old Grandfather at a more fitting place it's her right to change her mind and ask for her money back. Sometimes we have to stand up for what we think is right and I applaud her for going against the grain.
Changing the name of this place is whole new issue, that won't happen!

Seriously!? This needs to stop! You can't change history! Just because one racist jerk did something HORRIBLE, it doesn't mean that all white people are racist! A lot of people are acting like everything that happens recently is race related! Not everything revolves around race people!!! Grow up! Race is only an issue when you make it an issue and guess what!? When you allow race to be an issue for you, YOU ARE THE RACIST!!! It doesn't matter what race you are!!!

she did exactly what shw should have done if she didn't like the name. she had to know what the name was when she paid her money. she just wanted to make a point. If you don't like it. Don't go there. Why should it be changed because she is OFFENDED????? That is our history and it will never be changed, even if the name was changed. This is one of the newer OBAMAISM"S (I'm OFFENDED). Well. you'll get over it.

Wait......she booked a party at the facility, knowing full well what the name was, and NOW it's offensive and hurtful for her? How does that even make a little sense? It had the same name when she booked the party! Don't make a mockery of people who are truly offended by something by jumping on a hysteria bandwagon and then claiming to be offended.......if you were truly offended by the name, you would never have booked the party there to begin with!

It has been named that since I was a child it use to be a big pool and tennis courts for us to use. This is ridiculous. We have people starving and homelessness every where and you can't change history. Look what the nazi flag stands for and no problems with that. We have people threatening to kill us and people worried about a flag, read your history books get educated, read about the American flag. This world is going to hell in a hand basket it's a shame.

Remember the Soldiers that lost their lives and Honor them ,one of my Grand daughters has a name pasted down through the years ,she is named after her Great Great Grand Mother ,who was a Lee ,That would be Robert Lee a General who served in the war between the states ,right or wrong it is our history ,and My Grand daughter holds her head high ,,, stop with all this madness and remember the Soldiers ,,,,yes they are all dead but their family lives , or maybe we should just go back to Vets came home and were spit on and called baby killers ,wake up people , if a person doesnt want to celebrate some where then don't ,that is their right ,but we that think different have rights too,,,,,, why not wait to elections and let us vote on what the people want ,isn't that the true American way ?
If not if should be !

People need to stop this! Butterfly effect people! You start changing things, it's just the beginning of it,what's next, I am afraid to know. She gave the deposit before all this crap in charleston started and now she pulls the card of being offended, she wasn't offended when she put in the deposit. All of this mess started because of a boy who killed people had pics of a confederate flag well he also was burning an American flag and wearing a golds gym tshirt, so I guess we need to close down all the golds gyms right because it's associated with a killer.wake up people! This boy hated all Americans , if a white person was in that church he would of killed them too, burning the american flag shows he didn't love ANYONE! We have had the confederate name, flag, statues for years, it's history and now because of some wacko we are changing and trying to destroy history. We need to keep our history in our minds and never let us forget, but we do move on together, smiling and forgiving one another knowing what we all as one has overcome in our history's. This all boils down to the history of slavery and if you open your hearts and your eyes and read your history, we as humans no matter of race we were all slaves at one time. That's why we have american ! We all came to get away from this stuff, to be truly free in Jesus christ, that's the foundation of America...let's never change or forget that!!!!

First of all, I have no desire to “fight a war” that has clearly already been won (on so many levels). I would challenge Mr. Steve Knockemus, Henrico County PR and Media Services Assistant Director, to review the history of such buildings (posted on the county website http://henrico.us/rec/) as Dabbs House, Clark-Palmore House Museum, Antioch School Community Center, Dorey Park, Manor House at Crump Park, Armor House and Gardens and Elko Community Center. Several of the buildings have significant confederate history, however they are named based on the owner or former residents of the home, not the community that sprouted up around it.

Once again, I would like to thank the county for “contacting me” to offer to refund my payment and expedite its return, despite their written policy.

Smh... I am black and I agree wit the other posts... It's soo many other things to worry about that a damn flag... It's 2015 people.. Removing a flag won't change jack****. Now if this was in the 50's and 60's I could sum what understand a little.. But at the end of the day.. It's American history rather it be good or bad.. It's all about how u view the flag.. I am personally not offended by the flag... The only flag I hate is the Dallas cowboy flag..that should be removed:-)

Why people acting like they soo offended now because that crazy young man made his choice to murder!!that flag been around wayy before that if you disagree with it stay away from it. It is history everyone has their own interpretation on the meaning of the flag and the name of that Rec. I'm sure everyone who lives in area or Henrico knows the name before this tragedy but now your in your feelings...STOP

I totally agree with Dawn. This is getting ridiculous. Soon we won't be able to name our kids Robert for fear of offending someone who thinks they are named after Robert E Lee or Thomas Jonathan Jackson (aka Stonewall). Will people named Jefferson Davis be forced to change their name or shunned because of it? Leave history alone. Stop trying to refight this war. It's over. It doesn't matter how much you want to change it, it's not going to change. Give the people in the south their right to honor their heritage and stop trying to oppress them.

  • Dawn Stuart - 9 years ago

This is really getting ridiculous! First it is the flag then the monuments now the word confederate. Where is it going to stop? This is our countries history and like it or not the confederacy is part of that. Why should people who are proud of their heritage have it all taken away because people don't know the difference between history and heritage?
