My 1 year old daughter pushes people away that she doesn't want holding her and I dont force them on her. However, my grandparents are getting at that age where I worry that my visit will be our last. I make sure that they get a hug from my kid.

I don't have kids, but I have nieces and nephews under 3 and in our family & we don't play that. If the kid is uncomfortable, we don't force them. What usually happens, is later on, they may walk back up to the adult and give them a hug voluntarily once they've warmed up. Of course being African, some family members call them 'spoiled' but I wasn't forced to hug as a child. My parents DID force me to speak and shake hands, but hugs and kisses were up to me & my comfort level. I think adults sometimes forget that children are people and not property or puppets.
