Most of you have missed the main point of this whole issue. Freedom of speech is protected by the 1st amendment and is there to protect our right to express our opinions in speech or print. The school board or school system is a form of government in this country. Anyone who has questioned a high school student recently must surely have seen that American History related to the revolution and the constitution is no longer being taught. Thus the lack of knowledge of our rights and the importance of protecting them. That picture they banned poses no threat to anyone. The clothing the young man chose to wear and the gun he carries pose no threat to anyone. The only reason the picture is banned is that the government ( school board) chose to censor the content of the pictures printed in the year book. Next they could ban any other picture they deem unsuited or below their standards. Freedom of Speech is a necessary part of our freedom. Whether you agree of disagree with the content of the picture it is just that, a picture. It does no harm to anyone. But giving up your freedom of speech to any branch of government can and will do irreparable damage to us all, in years to come. You should all be attending school board meetings and getting involved in the content of the text books being used to teach our children . You may find why our younger generations are so easily willing to give up our bill of rights. Because most have never learned the cost our forefathers paid to give us those freedoms and the lives our fathers and grandfathers sacrificed to protect those freedoms for these young people. Our children are being indoctrinated in political correctness and socialism and being taught to vote for politicians who's only concern is to promote a welfare state by giving money, food, cell phones, and health care to those who won't work or illegal aliens who will work but pay no taxes. Wake up people.

I think that every person who attacks the Bill of Rights is a Traitor and should be hung by the neck until dead. Thats just my opinion. It doesn't mean i'm going to make it so . Just because these LOSERS and America Haters want to suppress freedoms in America doesn't mean their the enemy. YES IT DOES. Liberalism is NAZISM. Make no mistake about it. We must drive these scum bags from our country.

I applaud Principal Dahlen for abiding by the school's policy by not allowing this photo into the school's yearbook. The message this picture sends IS NOT a positive one for the school nor the community. The fact that this is even under discussion is mind boggling. The principal is NOT pushing his own agenda but simply upholding the rules and regulations of the school regarding the display of items such as this. Also, according to North Dakota law, under Code 62.1-05-01, "a person may not purchase, sell, have, or possess a machine gun, fully automatic rifle, silencer, .....or any other federally licensed firearm or dangerous weapon unless that person has complied with the National Firearms Act [26 USC 5801-5872]." This gun should not be in your minor son's hands anyway!! I'm sure you are due a well-deserved visit from Child Protective Services.

If the policy in the school states or even comes close to stating no weapons, drugs, violence then WHY go out of your way to post it and make a HUGE deal about it. You must have hundreds of pictures of your son?? I own & love my weapon but come on man?! Now you want the principle FIRED AS WELL?! your TOO MUCH GUY!

Someone already made the point but; really? It's not a hunting hobby picture with a hunting rifle with their dog. This picture shows a kid with an assault rifle under a flag, with a patriotic shirt and.... Gym (basketball) shorts?!? LOL Good luck trying to win this case! This has got to be a joke, right?!? I'm waiting for a link to The Onion. #Parentingcrisis

I am a former Marine....I love my country and it's people dearly. And I absolutely DO NOT think this photo belongs in a high school yearbook. Whether illegal in any manner or not, it entices and provokes violence and does not in any way portray a "love for your country". If this boy wants to show a love for his country, AFTER he graduates from high school, he is free to join any of the armed forces to prove that love. High school is not the place for these type of confrontational issues. And high school is not the place for guns or photos of guns in a yearbook. This is a STUPID topic of conversation and I don't know why this would be a question in ANYONE'S mind. Especially the administrators of this school system. The answer is NOOO. You may NOT pose for a picture with a gun in our yearbook. SMH at the stupidity of some people.

I have 4 grown sons who is all for the 2nd Amendment, and are hunters and have firearms to protect their family but I'm 100% sure none owns any sort of assault rifle. They're not hunting people! From what I've read, this young mans father has an issue with tolerance. That in my eyes should be a red flag all in its self! Any school that would allow a child to hold an assault rifle in their yearbook would just be nuts! Now, if he were in camouflage holding his favorite hunting rifle, I wouldn't see any issue but I understand the schools policy and should be respected! Good job the principal did in not giving in.

This "father" is showing what a bad parent is. Not only is he fighting to allow his son use a picture of him holding an assault rifle that (is) meant to kill people, not a hunting rifle just shows the "Father" is not setting a good example to his son. Especially the comment he made about a flag that has meaning to the LGBT community. Any parent who teaches intolerance toward other groups of people; harmless people at that who's been opressed show the pure hatred in this mans brain. The religious beliefs argument in this case is clearly false. God have mercy on this "father" and prayers for the son that he doesnt turn out like his "Father"...Where is CPS?!?

An assault riffle in a child's hand is not in the least tasteful and I believe Jude because of the fact this guy is trying to force a school to allow this student; his son to hold a rifle meant to kill people, he should be subjected to a visit by Child protective services!

The weapon in the picture is not a rifle really, it is a weapon used for killing people. I find the picture stupid and offensive, just a lot of beefcake. AND fyi, I am a gun enthusiast and gun owner. Enough said!
