Favorite Lines from "Born to Stub"
Outside, the sky unzipped from the bottom and rain fell out.
A single cat hair floated into the abandoned space around the cat dishes.
The next two miles began near Main Street, where a collection of brick buildings and plastic awnings lined up at the sidewalk like tired elderly neighbors saying good morning.
Twenty paces ahead, a squirrel slithered vertically, prize in mouth.
Robed chairs huddled around our glass topped table. The tin candle centerpiece whispered soft light on a dark red napkin. Music unraveled from high speakers. Our clear pitcher of ice water perspired and my fingers left streaks as I waited for him to return from the restroom.
My cheeks were hot buttered toast. I shrugged him off.
Golden leaves cartwheeled on a silver path. Emerald trees nodded to a porcelain sky. The breeze carried the space between bushes to my nose. This place smelled like a sweet version of the outdoors- puppies playing in the yard. A leaf helicopter crashed. Another twirled on a spider’s thread.
My ribs imprisoned my breath as I waited for his next words.
